Big East Armageddon has arrived

There have been plenty of posts on the future home of the Louisville Cardinals since this cynical and disgusting game of musical chairs first began; and everyone of those posts were loaded with speculation about what may or may not happen. Most of us know why we've been so enthralled with the issue, it's quite simple actually; it's because at one point in time the Cardinals were among so many red headed step children of the BCS who were on the outside looking in. Now, we all wait on baited breath for chips to fall into place.

More after the jump....

I will not, at this point anyway, speculate about where the University of Louisville will land, I've done that before. I'm not going to tell you that our options are this-that-or-the other; people who are far more knowledgeable about this situation have already done that. I will say this, I honestly think our chances of staying in a League with an automatic BCS bid are about 50/50 at this point. I also know in my heart of hearts that if there is a spot for Louisville in one of the leagues that makes it through this seedy, cannibalistic, roller-coaster-ride that has now seized our sports livelihood by the boo-boo,.... then Tom Jurich will make it happen.

First of all, the "Brutus-like" behind the scenes maneuvering done by the University of Pittsburgh was a giant knife in the back. These were the same people who have been at the forefront of the fight telling the rest of the league that their primary objective was to keep the Big East together. Now, it has become apparent that they were actually positioning themselves, along with Syracuse, to roll into the ACC with as little competition as possible. Even though I understand a business decision is not supposed to be personal,.. it's actually always really-really personal to the people who get screwed over. So,... to them I say, what.... the-fuck? Screw you guys...... screw you guys right in the ear holes. Especially you Pitt, who (FYI) tried to sue Boston College a few years ago for doing something similar with the same league. Yeah, I couldn't make that up even if I wanted to. In the ear hole Pitt,.... you too Syracuse,.... TKSTK MFers.

It's a  dammed shame that Louisville fans could not allow the glory of a moment that was five years in the making to sink in before turning their attention to something that has, in my mind anyway, come to represent all that is wrong with college athletics. Money, money, money, and mo money is seemingly all that matters in this twisted reality we find ourselves in. It is a reality where young men are taken advantage of, and the fans who supply the money are, more often than not, reduced to an after thought if the money can still be had.

If I sometimes come across as someone who is hopelessly idealistic in my love for this athletic department, and the young men and women who represent it, it's because I am. It's because I have literally spent years of my life investing money, time, and emotion into her through a degree from the school itself, and the fan-hood I wear on my sleeves. However, with the age of my 31 years, the luster and beauty of being idealistic has begun to fade. The idealistic soul tends to harden with each shot to the beauty of those ideas. The "Collision Course" is something that is idealistic in every sense of the word and it is something that has been a process, not an event, despite the fact that an event could make the dream a reality. In the last five years that dream has been so close we could taste it and so far away you couldn't see it with a telescope. One of the main reasons we were ever that close in the first place was because we were invited to the table. Was it the kids table? Perhaps, but we were there; and now the thought of being on the outside begging for scraps has become a possibility. Our belief in what we have to offer and what really matters isn't nearly as important as we all wish it was. That, more than anything else, has knocked some of the luster off of the dreams imparted unto me by a man who sparked a movement of faith among so many of us.

I, nor anyone else for that matter, can tell you exactly how things will play out; but, it now seems as if all of it will be settled sooner rather than later. The Big East has become nothing more than shipwrecked passengers treading water and hoping to be pulled into a lifeboat with a limited number of seats. What I can tell you,.... what I can promise you,... is that we have one of the very best, NO, the best Athletic Director in the country; and right now he's pissed. He is pissed off and he's breathing life into every contingency plan that he and his people have put together for this exact moment. Make no mistake about it folks, the moment for an "every AD for himself" mentality has arrived. Because I know that's true, what I can tell you is that Tom Jurich is now operating without prejudice, and with a survivalist mentality. Right now that's about all we're guaranteed.

We did beat Kentucky this weekend, keep that in mind, and we did see an ugly streak come to a glorious end. Keep that in mind this week as you see every annoying UK fan you would have wanted to avoid had things not gone our way Saturday evening. No matter what happens between now and the first day of October, when Marshall rolls into town, be happy for what you saw this weekend. Get out there for that 3:30 kickoff and give those young men as much as they gave you in Lexington on Saturday. They deserve it and so do you. Go Cards
