It's pretty simple
One player beat us. 2 big plays decided the game. When Mario comes back and the OL gets better we’ll have a running game and this team will win some more. Until then, we will probably lose. Benavides is the key to how this season goes. I really believe that.
One player did not beat us
The 5 players who were supposed to be blocking for the offense beat us.
There are two schools of thought when you’re going up against an uber-talented player.
1. You decide to double him and try to make sure he does nothing, while banking that the rest of their team can’t beat you without him.
2. You play your game just like you would any other and bank that he can’t beat you by himself.
The defense only gave up 17 points last night, 3 in the second half.
If you can’t score more than 17 points on offense,….. then it wasn’t your defense, especially your defense on one player, that cost you the game.
I just don’t think it’s fair to say “one player beat us.” He did some damage for sure, but if the offensive line does their job we score more than 17, and then if Will doesn’t throw the pick 6 then we win the game for sure.
And if ifs and buts were candy and nuts…….. everyday would be Christmas.

OK
But even with our poor OL play, we at least get it to OT if you take even one of those 2 big plays away. We destroyed FIU in every stat other than that guy’s. I totally agree that the OL is the real issue here, but that game was won by Hilton more than lost by our OL. IMO.
I'd say Hilton punched up in the mouth, and we tried to play catch-up from there
with an O-line doing nothing for the QB or the running backs
Hilton killed us in the sense we don’t have the O-line to let us catch up
I respect your point of view

As I do yours
and you’re right that even with Hilton they should have put more than 17 on the board. Our OL is just really bad. Hernandez gave up in the 2nd Half, basically. I watched him specifically on several plays and he was just embarrassing against a guy he had 50 lbs. on. He has no business starting. We desperately need Mario back so Kupper can take that position back.

I think it was our inexperienced corners and o-line that beat us.
Corners got torched this game, unlike against Murray. It was only a matter of time until they got beat deep for a TD, it was a shame it happened on damn near back to back plays covering the same guy.
I’m much less worried about the corners right now as compared to the o-line. We have to be able to be more productive on offense. It’s a long season, our QB and RB’s can’t be running for their life one almost every play.

Our Corners
didn’t play poorly at all. On both of the big TD plays to Hilton, it was our Safeties that got burned. Hakeem took really poor angles on both rundowns and Holton flat out got beat one-on-one covering him. FIU smartly ran configurations designed to put our weakest cover guys on their star. Kudos to them. We should have been able to absorb giving up 17 points on defense (the other 7 were from the INT Stein threw) and still win the game. This is all on the offense, and that’s all on the OL. But you know what? These first 2 games have gone eerily similar to last year’s first 2, only in reverse. Last year we gave up 2 big plays to Cobb and UK and lost by 7. This year it was the 2nd game of the year, but same thing… we gave up 2 big plays to their Cobb (Hilton) and lost by 7. Last year’s 2nd game we played an OVC team and looked lame and won by 10. This year we played an OVC team in the 1st game, looked lame, and won by 12. Last year we scored 39 points in our first 2 games. This year we’ve scored 38 points in the first 2. Last year we gave up 36 points in the first 2 games. This year we’ve given up 33 in the first 2 games. Let’s remember that we ended up winning a bowl game last year. Lots of things to fix, but the sky is not falling.

Good review. I havne't had time to watch the game on TV yet
Just remember the ball going over the head of the corners and safeties taking terrible angles against T.Y.

Holton didn’t get burned. The two safeties split the field like they were suppose to. Dexter Heyman was covering Hilton on that second TD and Hilton just out ran him. FIU did a great job with that playcall matching up Hilton with a linebacker.
