I am excited about the arrival of Wayne Blackshear. I have watched all of his youtube videos and went to the game he played at Eastern against Western. All signs point to him being a very productive player and, potentially, a future pro. However, it seems to me that expectations for his freshman year are alredy close to getting out of hand, at least among some on CC. For some perspective, here are Blackshear's rankings from four major recruting sites as well as the player that occuppied that slot in the 2010 class.
Scout - 16 - CJ Leslie, NC St
Max Preps - 24 - Trae Golden, Tennessee
ESPN - 26 - Adreian Payne, Michigan St
Rivals - 36 - Lorenzo Brown, NC St
Obviously this isn't a foursome that lit the world on fire, and certainly none of them are going to be one-and-done players, as some like to suggest Blackshear will be. Many of us would probably reply that Blackshear is underrated, but what do we base that on? - a close evaluation of every player ranked ahead of him? We shouldn't let our desire become a burden for him to bear (and end up being disappointed when he doesn't average 15 ppg). Personally, at least early in the season, I think it's unlikely that he'll start but think he'll instead be the first perimeter player of the bench. The team will be good enough from the start that he'll be able to grow into his role - and I think we should cool off a bit and give the chance to do so. He's going to be good, but maybe (initially) not as good as we want him to be.
