The State Of The Program

So if you are like most of the world these days, you live in the "what have you done for me lately" society. I decided to figure out what the "status" is of Louisville basketball in recent time (2005). I think most Louisville fans think that we are a top 5-7 program all-time and while I do agree with that ranking all-time recently we are about top 10.

In this study you get 1 point for Winning A Championship, 1 For A Final Four, 1 For A Sweet 16, and 1 for Elite 8. So the main part of this study was tournament success. The reason I rewarded 1 point for each instead of say 4 for a championship, is that I tried to take the view of a incoming recruit or a casual fan.

The second part of the study gave 1 point for a top 10 Recruiting Class, and 1 point for a First Round Draft Pick. Obviously, despite what most purist say this is a status symbol amongst fans, not to mention very important to incoming prospects. The results are not that surprising although a lot of "doom and gloom" fans may be surprised.

Overall:

1. North Carolina-30 total points

That's pretty damn impressive. They have won two titles, favored this upcoming season for a 3rd since 2005. Some of the more staggering numbers 6 out of 7 Top 10 recruiting classes (Scout.com), and 9 First Round Picks. They are the big dog of college basketball right now, PERIOD.

2.Kansas-18 total points

Somewhat surprising, since they are known for early tournament exits. They have put 6 people in the 1st round of the draft, and also won the championship in their only Final Four since 2005.

3. UCLA, UCONN, Florida, Memphis, Duke-17 total points

Most basketball fans respect UCLA's 3 Final Four runs in a row, and no championships, still 6 NBA First Rounders. UCONN, just won the championship in a down NCAA year but has also put 6 players in the first round, most notably several off the team that was upset by George Mason. Florida, had not only the back-to-back titles but also 3 lottery picks off that team. Duke makes their mark matching UNC with 6 out of 7 top ten recruiting classes, and 1 title. Most surprisingly on the list is probably PayPalCal and all the great point guards he "developed" coming in on this tier. They stroll away with a Final Four to their credit, $ I mean 4 top 10 recruiting classes and 5 first-rounders.

4. Kentucky, Ohio State-16 total points

Kentucky comes in with 16 total points, remember this is a total of Tubby, Billy Clyde, and Cal. Unfortunately I have to agree with UK fans and that Tubby at the end of his tenure and Billy Clyde were not getting things done at UK. Cal has over a half of their total points and he has only been there 2 seasons at this point. Calimari and his ex-UK coaches combined for 6 first round picks, 1 Final Four and I will let you figure the math on that one to give Cal the credit. My question is how has the NCAA not looked at Ohio State basketball yet? With all of the ridiculousness of the football program, I can only assume that similar things are happening for Thad Matta and Co. Either way they come in with 5 out of 7 top 10 recruiting classes (Really?!?!?), as well as 6 first rounders. I cannot but help wonder how this football school continues to get studs?? Free tattoos? Free cars??

And Finally...

5. Louisville, Michigan St.-14 total points

Michigan State has obviously, sometimes at the peril of Louisville had great tournament success since 2005. Izzo has also done it without NBA talent, only putting 2 players into the first round. Matching UCLA and UNC with 3 Final Fours, but with a lack of NBA talent I am going to say that Tom Izzo in a sense may be losing his touch overall.  Here are my Cards coming in with a Izzo equalizing 14 points! A very overall balanced performance by the Cards leaves them with 4 top 10 recruiting classes, 3 Elite 8s, 3 first rounders, and 1 Final Four. And as much as we complain about Pitino not getting it done on the recruiting front, he only trails UNC, Duke and Ohio State on that front. Yes, although we have no championship yet, we are on the cusp I believe and with these same type of rankings in use we could rise as high as number 2 overall since 2005. That's kind of a big deal.
