Your Favorite Cardinals!
During my ME time in the shower the other day, I thought of what some of my buddies at CC favorite Cardinal athletes were.
Here are mine.....
FOOTBALL:
FAVORITE- Brian Brohm
It was a close one between him and Michael Bush. He stayed all four years to try and help us make the National Championship. He was a tough player and a no quit attitude. I remember his Senior Night against Rutgers, oh how I wanted us to crush them bitches for what they did the previous year. Brohm led us back to beat Rutgers in same fashion that Rutgers did the year before. He is a Cardinal at heart and my favorite ever.
Basketball:
Favorite- Earl Clark
I used to like Terrence Williams more, but after I thought more, I really liked Clark better. I like the way he moved for a big fella' he had quickness, and range. Though he didn't have SPECTACULAR numbers, he was an 'Over-achiever' according to Rick Pitino. I admired him back in my basketball days and always wanted to be the big guy that could shoot, dribble, and handle the ball like E5 did.
MOST UNDERRATED:
Football- Bilal Powell
Even though he did not have a BREAKOUT college career, Powell shined in his senior year. It sucks that it was his senior year because Charlie Strong used him well unlike you know who. But this last year showed you what he was capable of and it was pretty de-moralizing to finally see him shine during the game and later come to terms that he was a Senior and wouldn't be back. He was in the top 5 in rushing yard for most of the year but didn't get any attention at all. He is a hard worker IE: 85 yard run in Cincy game!
Basketball- Preston Knowles
Do I have to explain. OK, this mans body wasn't the biggest, wasn't the strongest, but his heart was. He was probably the most UNDERRATED player in college basketball this last year. He helped Louisville win games IE: Marquette game, Notre Dame game, and hit the game winner against Pitt. He dominated Syracuse with his SEVEN THREE-POINTERS. He was a perfect example of a team mate, probably the hardest working man to wear a Cardinal jersey!
Give me your ideas guys, oh and HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY to everyone.

Fav's for me...
Basketball: Taquan Dean, brought toughness and great shooting to the PG position. Every time he shot I was really surprised if he missed. He could have went pro early, but loved Louisville and came back for his senior year. Even though he went to the NIT off of a Final Four he still played his heart out in those games.
Football: Dave Ragone: Toughest QB I can remember and took Louisville to different levels it had never been before him (that 11-1 season in 2001 is still probably my favorite U of L football season. Only 3 time Conference USA player of the year and another player who could have went pro early, but stayed for his senior year.
The King
I know I should look more towards the past (loved Taquan Dean, T Will, Reece Gains) but since the last game at Freedom Hall, King Kyle shot way up to the top of the list and it might be a long time before I consider anyone else.
As far as football, I’m always more fond of the local guys. The Brohms, Michael Bush, Chris Redman, Doug Beauxmont, etc.
Hmmm..
Basketball – this really shouldn’t be a question given my “name”
Basketball – So I think my actual favorites where Bush and Dave Ragone, but I also loved Kerry Rhodes and Mario Urrutia – I wish Mario had been more competitive, could have been the next Plaxico Burress

Stout Out!

Preston!!
Yeah, I’ve now given him another exclamation point. I’ve never seen more heart in any athlete.
Brian Kiser
I loved the 3 pt shot when I was a kid, and he was the best at it.
For football it would either be Harry Douglass or Tony Stallings(if only for the run against UK, which he still smiles when you ask him about it). Harry just brought so many great moments in my football life, starting with the reverse in the liberty bowl, ending with so many great plays his senior year, when only about half the team cared
old school (no surprise there)
Basketball: Darrell “Doctor Dunkenstein” Griffith
Football: Howard “The Fly” Stevens
"...and the present, for us, is something that we really look forward to."
- Rick Pitino
Anyone who didn't see little Howard Stevens run really missed something.
He could really fly.

I have a confession to make.
Preston used to drive me insane, the way T-Will did at times. Until about 1/3 into this last season I would always bitch and moan to friends about how he thought he was Kobe and he could pull up from anywhere. I’d say, “Stop shooting so much and play defense! That’s what you’re good at. Play defense!” Then he started drilling from almost anywhere, leading the team, and kept being the lockdown defender that I had always admired about him. He totally won me over this year and just from the way my heart broke for him in the Morehead game, he absolutely has to be my favorite basketball Cardinal of my fan life. I hope this doesn’t make it sound like I only started liking him because he started scoring…
Football: Michael Bush. Fuck that injury. If we have Michael Bush the whole season, we play in the National Championship against Florida. I wish so much that that game would have happened, even if only to see how we stacked up. The Big East was 5-0 in bowl games that year, by the way. Interesting tidbit. Also interesting, most of my posts lately have been like books it seems. Forgive me.
ALL HAIL
Two more unforgetable things about Bush's injury.
1. It was dirty.
2. It was against UK.
Related: UK also poked out Pallacios’s eye and he had to wear those goggles the rest of his career.
Stout Out!
Bush
I agree that play did look dirty; however, I would have been grabbing onto anything possible if I were a defender starting the third quarter and the guy has already rushed for 135 yards and 3 TD’s. Dawson and Burton were both friends of Bush’s and came over to his side afterwards and were noticeably upset – UK knew they were never going to win that game and I think his friends were upset they just ruined his NFL draft. ……..but yes, we would have been playing for the N.C.
and I agree, Palacios was never the same after he put the goggles on, I loved his game before the injury bug got him – he could have been special

My favs
Basketball: Reece Gaines
Football: Amobi Okoye
I picked two players during my tenure on campus. Nobody was ever as tough or as automatic as Reece Gaines. You needed a bucket, he’d get you one. You needed a three, he would make it. For football, I picked a player most remember, but few I doubt would pick as their favorite. Amobi had the most heart, drive, respect and compassion on any athlete I met at UofL. Not to mention his amazing maturity and intelligence to come to Louisville and excel on the field and classroom at only 16 years old (still the youngest NCAA athlete ever).

I think people forget he was 19 when he was drafter #10 overall
he has underachieved so far given that pick, but he is still developing into a man!!
