Recruiting results

Following up on a post that showed how our recruiting class ranked relative to UNC, Duke, UK, Memphis, Florida and UConn since 2005. I added some data. Below is the average class rank for each using the best 5 years. I threw out the worst 2 years to eliminate the Not Rated classes for everyone. Next is the number of Top 5 and Top 10 classes each school had (2005-2011). Finally is the number of appearances each school made at the Elite Eight or better, Final Four or better, or National Championships won. See results below.

Avg

Elite Final

Class Top 5 Top 10 Eight Four  Nat

Rank Classes Classes or better or better Champs

UNC 3.4 5 6 5 3 2

Duke 4.4 3 6 1 1 1

UK 5.8 3 3 3 1 0
Memphis 8.6 2 4 3 1 0
UL 9.0 2 4 3 1 0
Florida 12.8 1 2 3 2 2

UConn 13.6 1 2 3 2 1

Note that UNC has the highest ranked recruiting class with the most Top 5 classes AND the most Elite Eight and Final Four appearances. Surprisingly Duke, with the second highest rated class has the FEWEST Elite Eight appearances.

Next note how similar the next three schools are. UK, Memphis and Louisville all have exactly the same NCAA appearance record of 3-1-0. UK has one more Top 5 class but UL and Memphis have one more Top 10 class. In fairness, UK is clearly on the rise with three #1 classes in a row so it wouldn't be surprising to see them separate themselves from this group.

Finally, Florida and UConn have the worst avverage class ranking and the same number of Top and Top 10 classes 1-2 (half as many as Louisville and Memphis' 2-4), but have an equal number of Elite Eight appearances, more Final Four appearances AND of course those 3 National Championships.

Can we draw any conclusions from this data?

Maybe that Roy Williams seems to be the best recruiter (highest avg class rank, most Top5 and Top 10 classes) AND has gotten by far the best results with those classes - most Elite Eights or better (5) most Final Fours (3),  and tied for most National Titles (2).

Coack K at Duke seems to have gotten the least results with very good classes with surprisingly the fewest number of Elite Eight or better appearances with the most Top 10 classes.

Donovan and Calhoun seem to have gotten the best results with the poorest recruiting classes of the group. Fewest Top 5 and Top 10 classes, but as many Elite Eights as UK, Memphis and UL, with more Final Fours and those 3 National Championships.

Very interesting. Your thoughts?
