Pitino to announce [insert hyperbole] this afternoon

From C.L. Brown's blog (Charlie Strong's 4th favorite):

U of L will have a press conference Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. to announce a pair of assistant men's basketball coaching hires, but the third assistant coach won't be revealed just yet. As expected, Richard Pitino will rejoin his father's staff after spending two seasons at Florida.

Wyking Jones, who spent last season at New Mexico, will likely join the staff on Tuesday as well. Like Tim Fuller, who left for Missouri, Jones spent two seasons as a Nike travel team manager. Prior to his time with the shoe giant he was an assistant coach at Pepperdine for five seasons.

I've heard the Cards have zeroed in on their likely third assistant, but he has to be properly vetted before they make the hire.

That third assistant "to be properly vetted" has been widely rumored to be either Kevin Keatts or Will Wade. Keatts is the current head coach at Hargrave Military Academy PG (Post Graduate), a prep school in Virginia with a history of sending post graduates to the NBA, e.g. Josh Howard, David West and Jordan Crawford. Wade is an assistant coach on Shaka Smart's staff at Virginia Commonwealth University, a 2011 Final Four participant.

So a Nike connection, a prep school coach & little Richard walk into a local bar and the bartender says, "What is this, the best coaching staff ever assembled?"

FIRST

Before we get too excited, obviously recruiting guys is different than having guys show up. Whoever we get, if they are good, I hope they stick around a couple years.

I see

I meant the coaches, but yes, obviously the players too. Basically, just don’t want what happened with Fuller to happen again. If these guys we hire are in on 2012 – 2014 superstars, then hopefully the coaches stick around long enough for the guys they recruited to show up.

one and done babee

Fuller just took the one and done philosophy and expanded it from players to coaches. Ah, the respecting commitment of it all!

let the drama unfold! Reliable source its Charles Barkley

My question is if everything is about basketball giant Nike from asst coaches to players even the AAU teams and camps then why do we wear adidas? IMO if you look at all the apparell that kids wear it is NIKE or JORDAN. No one wears adidas…except Derrick Rose and RUN DMC.

by CountryCard on Apr 26, 2011 8:30 AM EDT reply actions

Any of these would be great hires

Wade is talked about as an up and comer, and was one of the highly regarded assistants at VCU. If he doesn’t come to Louisville, expect him to be at a bigger school within the next 2 years.

Adidas

I think they realize what is happening too and trying to rival all of the new technology and flashy looks that Nike is known for….. See: SporTek football jerseys from last year.

And I agree….. D-Rose is a pretty big exception.

What?

I had no idea C.L. was Charlie’s 4th favorite.

I love the comment from the linked article

where Pitino admits "all three have to be high, high caliber recruiters in mind. I have learned that the hard way." It’s great to see him recognizing how valuable Nike connections are with kids now. Thank you John Calipari / In-state rivalry.

Agree that the in-state rivalry is driving Rick to accomplish big things before he hangs it up

In the long run, I think Cal’s arrival in Lexington will have been a good thing for our program. It has motivated Rick to get his recruiting straightened out, and I think it has also motivated him to finish at the top in his last few years here. If we can keep the recruiting pipeline flowing for the next 3-4 years, we should have several legitimate shots at the FF/national title in those years.

Scary thing is...

…why didn’t Rick recognize this earlier?

by centrecard on Apr 26, 2011 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Why didn't Denny utilize the 3-pt shot?

Both are great coaches, I think that they just get so set in their ways and have so much pride in their perspective and philosophy of the game that it takes a huge force (Calipari for Rick) to get them to reverse themselves.

by bartenpa on Apr 26, 2011 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes?

He’s supposed to be connected through AAU and seems like a genuinely interesting guy on top of that.

by bartenpa on Apr 26, 2011 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Also I posted on the original rumor thread

that Wyking used to coach under Paul Westphal for five years at Pepperdine. Westphal is the current coach of the Sacramento Kings, so there’s an NBA tie for what it’s worth.

Glad Richard is back

That was the highlight of the conference for me, getting that officially clarified. Sounds like Rick is regrouping, making the necessary adjustments where he needs them. He said they already have the three players in mind for next year’s class. Let’s hope they can get them.

So now

What recruits do these guys have up their sleeves. Hopeing Wyking is familiar with Purvis. Or should I say I hope Purvis is familiar with Wyking. Maybe with the incoming “connections” some of the wavering we have seen from the recruiting class may settle down.

by lvl1 on Apr 26, 2011 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

My guess...

1. Rodney Purvis (Keeping him committed has to be 1st priority)
2. Alex Poythress (Wingman reminds me a little of Derrick Williams from AZ)
3. D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Need a PG)

by Card-in-nati on Apr 26, 2011 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Same, per what I've heard recently.

I thought the staff was also interested in Gary Harris. I also heard about interest in Ric Ledo and Shabazz Muhammed a while ago, but I think that has fizzled in recent months.

by Get_In_My_BELLY_ on Apr 26, 2011 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Would love to see

G.Harris come here but I think he is Big-10 bound.

by Card-in-nati on Apr 26, 2011 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly I don't mind losing recruits,

as long as it’s not to UK or a Big East contender. Unless they are in the top 5 in their class, they’re usually replaceable.

by Get_In_My_BELLY_ on Apr 26, 2011 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll send him a DVD of 'The Wood'

Since one of the main characters in it is supposedly based on Wyking.

by bartenpa on Apr 26, 2011 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree in his attitude towards TJ

Treat it like he is gone, if he stays that’s cool too.

by gary west on Apr 26, 2011 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

Gary harris

Reports are we have backed off of him, I’m assuming to focus solely on purvis and smith-Rivera

Since I don’t think behanon and blackshear are one and done – cab you just imagine a 2012 roster with senior Buckles, Junior Gorgui, Behanon and Poythress with a backfired of Senior Siva, Blackshear Purvis and Smith-Rivera…. Plus Nunez and Price and Junior Justice/Russ!!!! WAY too far in the future, just a little day dreaming. love the hires!

Geez

We need to field two teams. No way we can get that much awesome on the court.

I was just thinking about next year's team.

If I remember right, if TJ comes back we’ll be three teams deep. And that’s with Russ Smith, Mark Jackson Jr., Marra, Van Treese, and Price as third string. I am confident that team could compete for the title in many conferences. Hendo would be the sixth man for the third team.

Great hires and Keatts will be the icing on the cake.....By the way this is looking a little down the road but Wyking has a close connection to 2013 PF Aaron Gordon and had New Mexico in good position with him

Outside of trying to secure purvis and the other two committs in the 2012 class look for this kid to be Jones first big target as a member of the UofL staff. Gordon has been labeled as the next Blake Griffin for good reason. Heres a link to his highlight tape http://youtu.be/biY-RTdbEk4?hd=1

No. Because then what if I knew him in real life?

It says he went back to Cali yesterday…..
finals start today.

by GOCARDSATTITUDE on Apr 27, 2011 6:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't be hating

He’s got to do what’s best for him. Three things occur to me:

  • If Samardo can make it, TJ can make it.
  • The overall weakness of this year’s class may mean this really is his best chance.
  • And we don’t know what his situation is. For all we know, he might have someone in his family who needs money sooner rather than later, and be sacrificing millions of dollars in future money to help them handle an emergency.

NO.

NO NO NO.
I love TJ and have always loved TJ with my whole heart and I really can’t take it if he just- leaves me like this.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn’t have the whole season to prepare and I don’t feel like mourner any other players until I get another season.
I am what’s best for him. THE VILLE IS BEST FOR TJ.

You should know that.

and yet

you post pictures of yourself with Gorgui. Just sayin’.

I think Rick needs to really make a push to keep Tony Woods here now....A scholly offer would be a good start

I would have no problem with Gourgi starting next year the problem is im not sure Zach is ready at this point to play significant minutes as the back up. I would be far more comfortable with Gourgi and Woods sharing the minutes at the 5 and letting Zach get his feet wet here and there. This is of coarse if TJ decides to keep his name in the draft which hasn’t been set in stone yet.

by TRUCARDFAN on Apr 27, 2011 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

Rick said in his presser that he's still considering transfers.

Technically, Woods IS still a transfer status AND Rick cannot discuss him by name or in detail since he’s not signed. He actually kinda slipped and mentioned him by name in the presser before Kenny K shut him down. Later is when he referenced “transfers” in general. I think he’s still in play and, deep down, why Rick very casually said he’s considering TJ gone.

Stout Out!
