I loved the team, no doubt. But obviously, there were some major weaknesses present.
We had three major problems- free throw shooing, rebounding, and injuries.
The Key- 5- Huge leap(good)
4- Small step forward
3- Stay the same
2- Small step backwards
1- Falling off a cliff
We'll start with free throw shooting.
The rundown- Last season obviously was a bad year for FT shooting. Last year, we were 416 for 627, resulting in a facepalm average 66%. That is not championship caliber.
Why help is on the way:
We get back Jared Swopshire, who in 2010 shot 85% from the charity stripe. Free throws only can improve (generally) for players. Players like Peyton Siva (68%), Gorgui Dieng (54%), Stephan Van Treese (31%), and Chris Smith (68%) have to step up. Wayne Blackshear and co. will also provide help. We lose Preston!, who was our leading FT shooter, but retain the next best three, Jared Swopshire (85%), Mike Marra (74%), and Kyle Kuric (76%).
Why it will bug us next year: Of the top 5 as far as free throws attempted, FOUR were under seventy pecent.
I believe with maybe a little bit more work and time to work on FT's, that we will improve a bit. Also, we return our top FT shooters.
The Verdict- 4
Next is Rebounding.
Why help is on the way:
This one can be directly attributed to injuries. Our two leading rebounders, Jared Swopshire (6.1), and Rakeem Buckles (6.1) were hurt most of the year. Tony Woods and Chane Behannen will bring immediate help. Wayne Blackshear gives us lots of length at the guard position. I don't think much more needs to be said.
Why it will bug us next year:
Injuries. That is all.
The verdict-5
Injuries
Unpredictable. Especially for us.
I say the future is bright! Next year is our year! Go Cards.
