Report: Former Calipari staffer broke NCAA rules
But forgotten in Calipari’s quick turnaround of Kentucky is a native of this bustling metroplex who was instrumental in the Wildcats’ resurrection: Bilal Batley.
Batley abruptly resigned as assistant director of basketball operations/manager after he violated NCAA rules by rebounding for a player during a workout in July 2009. Kentucky self-reported the secondary violation and sent Batley a letter of admonishment.
Batley’s job did not allow him to have on-court interaction with players. When he resigned, a team spokesman said he did so to return home because of an illness in his family.
But a nearly two-year FOXSports.com investigation revealed that Batley also broke NCAA rules by making repeated impermissible telephone calls while at both Memphis and Kentucky to recruits such as DeMarcus Cousins and their parents.

Rebounding during a workout
Can’t believe that’s actually a violation. Weird.

Oh come on.....Im sure Coach Cal didnt now about these Shenanigans
the truth has a well known anti-Calipari bias.
Bruce "the chest" Pearl is looking for a job.
I think he would be a good fit with squid.
So Fox has found the infractions regarding the phone calls.
When does the NCAA plan on investigating??
That article
Is terribly written. Super hard to read. Probably makes recruiting a lot easier if you can just call the recruits whenever you want.

This seems like small change in the big picture of Cal's recruiting.
I’m inclined to think that the Auburn-like stories are a lot closer to the truth. Then again, maybe he isn’t doing any of that at UK — I have no clue, but there are certainly rumors (from sources without an axe to grind) that would suggest this sort of thing isn’t even the tip of the iceberg.
So what exactly is the difference
between this and what Kelvin Sampson did at IU? Impermissible phone calls to recruits, that’s the alleged violation, right?
.....but it wasnt cal...
Teflon John strikes again…
makes me sick. All these UK homers rubbing in the fact theyre in the final four this year. I keep telling them its only a matter of time. The recent Jay-Z bullshit is a perfect example of how Cal taunts the NCAA regulations year in and out.
The one thing I always say…UK might be in the FF this year, but at least I know 10000% that everything the Cards have done in the last 10 seasons will be there to stay…
I just dont get it
Ultimately its the coaches responsibility to ensure all of HIS staff are abiding by all of the NCAA rules and regulations. Now I understand that there may be a time when a rouge staffer goes outside the lines and committs an infraction. So im all for giving someone a second chance especially when they didnt personally committ the violation…….
My issue is that its already happened TWICE…. Yeah he may not have personally committed the infractions however he already had is second chance and he blew that at Memphis.
Its almost like I could tell an employee to go rob a bank and bring me back the money. When the cops show up I say “well I didnt have anything to do with it”….. Ohh and not to mention its not the first time its the 3rd….LOL
If UK gets in serious trouble for this, then I'd say Goodman has finally given a prize to Mike.

In the Fab Five documentary
Armen Keteyian had a great quote, something along the lines of “When things are going well, coaches claim that they know every little thing that goes in with their players, staff and program. Then when trouble emerges and violations are revealed, they act like they were left in the dark.” Sums up Calipari’s tenure pretty well. I understand he was never named specifically at UMass or Memphis, but a coach’s program is ultimately a reflection of himself — consider me as someone who subscribes to the ‘where there’s smoke, there’s fire’ idealogy. Even if Calipari is not explicitly and knowingly breaking rules, I think the one-and-done philosophy he espouses fosters an environment that invariably brings trouble to a program

The Memphis thing was interesting
I could believe he didn’t know about Rose’s fake test scores. But everyone forgets the violations with having Rose’s brother on team flights. Small violation yes, but that can’t be difficult to know if you are the head coach. “Hey why is this guy on the plane?”
What I also dont get
Is how the NCAA ever expects to have any power over coaches when they dont hold them accountable. Of course if a coach knows all they have to do is pull the " I didnt know card " to get away with rules violations they are going to do so. To me the NCAA is currently giving incentive for coaches to pawn off the job of actually committing the infractions to their assistants and staff.
There doesn't seem to be a word about this on espn.com right now...
Although you can find both the NCAA-Miles UConn story and a story on Sypher’s extortion trial. Are they going to refuse to report on it because another news source developed the story? I don’t get it. This seems newsworthy.

ESPN
because of their position in the market, is actually fairly cautious when it comes to reporting allegations as news. FOX, conversely, has more incentive to try to break a story of dubious merit. I expect EPSN will gladly take it up and receive thousands of hits if and when they think the story is credible. I entirely don’t trust FOX and I expect ESPN doesn’t either. It’s best for all of us to wait and see.
If only every team could play with players who didn't qualify
Recently John Calipari got upset at a reporter when asked if he was excited about getting to his first final four, and he appeared visually upset by that question because he believes that he has actually been to 2 previous legitimate final fours. That being said, what would this season have looked like for U of L if Justin Coleman weren’t academically ineligible – maybe having another great athlete taller than 6’4" could have helped us with rebounding and getting to the basket. There have been tons of players who have become academically ineligible for many schools over the years that could have provided a signficant difference in their seasons. If Memphis didn’t have an academically ineligible Derek Rose (because his ACT/SAT score didn’t qualify him), do you think they would have made it to the Championship game? Didn’t think so…
And I also think it’s hilarious that UK fans would bash Conference USA when U of L was in it, but praise it now that Calipari is coach at UK (and the only time Memphis had any real domination was when U of L, Depaul, Cincinnati, Marquette, and USF left for the Big East).

I have never heard a UK fan (or any fan for that matter) "praise" conference USA
Was a trash conference with Louisville and Memphis, still a trash conference. Only conference UK fans trumpet is the SEC . . . in football. It helps them justify a 6-6 record every year in football.

You might want to listen to radio talk shows
You might want to listen to Drew Diener and Tony Vanetti, Cats fans do praise his resume in Conference USA.
Cal likes to cheat, the only problem, KENTUCKY LIKES TO CHEAT MORE.

Ky basketball in the 80's is to what SMU football was in the 80's.
The only difference, SMU received the death penalty. Ky was feeling all the heat from how good we were in the 80’s, so they did what they know best CHEAT. Now fast forward twenty years, we had a good run going this decade, win the Big East outright, and Big East tourney, #1 in the country, and #1 overall seed. What to do they do after they were just beat in the NIT?, hire the crookedest son of bitch there ever was.

I really hope they lose tonight.
I’m fine with bragging about a Final Four but a championship game berth would just be terrible.

He won't get in any trouble. You know why?
Because life is unfair and then you die…or that’s what’s it’s felt like for the last two weeks. Go UConn!

If it's limited to Cousins. it shouldn't affect this Final Four
but it does set UK2K back some, doesn’t it?
"Screech, you CAN'T elope!"
"Who are you calling a cantaloupe, you melonhead?"
I really don't want to hear about this until something sticks
Just getting my hopes up otherwise.

To be fair, UConn is in more NCAA hot water right now than UK is. . .
Calhoun should be the one concerned
except this will be the third team under Cal that has been under investigation.
How many times does this have to happen before the NCAA says enough is enough?
-Dustin
Whoever said we thought Calhoun was a saint?
I think he’s just as dirty as Cal (well, the other Cal) and don’t really like either of them.
The UK fans are hammering Crawford on his blog even mentioning this.
And Crawford was pretty gentle with UK. He pointed out that what is going on with UConn sounds potentially worse.
I felt a little guilty this morning about celebrating UK’s loss in light of some of the classier UK posters who appeared here after the Morehead loss to congratulate us on a great year. And for those fans, congratulations on your Final Four and the great year you had. But for the legions of UK fans who feel compelled to lash out anytime a columnist dares to discuss potential NCAA violations and who live to put down Louisville (5th-best team in the state, Tardinals, little brudder, etc.), well, I’m glad those fans had to taste defeat last night. Because it is those people who would have made it unbearable if UK had won it all this year.
