Jim Boeheim would prefer you not to mention Rick Pitino
Because Rick Pitino owns him.

JB is close to retirement
and most of those guys are a bit more loose with what they’ll say regarding their performance assessments. Rick isn’t much different, only (since we are riding on a successful, above-expectations season) his media perception and thus tone are quite different. Add 3-4 more losses to our schedule this year (Marquette, WVU, UConn and Syracuse) and I’d bet we’d be seeing a lot more of Rick losing his temper in PCs as well.
Bottom line is that JB is a great coach and one of (if not the best) coach of the zone defense in college basketball. Rick is a master at beating zone defenses, but it depends on how hot we are that night. Thus far, we’ve been pretty hot against the Cuse in the Big East.
To me, it’s another example of the media dog-piling on a story because they want to make it a story. Syracuse is having a bad Big East season. But does anyone really want to play a JB-led Syracuse team in March? (Other than us, since you know, Rick Pitino owns Jim Boeheim.)

great points, mostly agree
Except the dog-piling part. JB’s fault for harping on it (and them). A little childish.

i am a big JB fan
the press conference that he had where he cussed out the media over gerry mcnamara (sp?) was priceless…

Really like Boeheim
But he comes off pretty poorly here. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t lose a little respect for the man.

Agreed.
Don’t understand it, either.
Has anyone else noted how consistently short Pitino’s handshakes are with JB? Heck, he and Huggins practically embrace, but he shakes hands with Jim as quickly as he might shake hands with Sypher’s new counsel. Is there part of the story we are missing?
Maybe
It has something to do with the 1996 championship game.

no i don't notice that...but i don't look for it either
but I have understood that they are close friends…I doubt that JB wants to stick around and be buddy-buddy in the public eye with the protege that just beat him for the 7th time in a row. and CRP is classy enough to not rub it in his face.
I understand that, but it's not just this last time.
I’d say it’s at least the last 3 meetings, or more. I only hear that they remain close friends, and so I typically dismiss the quick handshakes. But then this comes out.
Just speculating based on weak evidence.
Huggins embraces everyone lately
He did it to JB after the loss to Syracuse. Huggins has really changed since the UC days.
For what it's worth
They spoke for quite a while before the game. JB even walked away and then came back to crack a joke with Rick.
I think most end of game shakes are short. No one wants to talk then.
Good point.
I pay less attention before the game, but I remember something similar at the 2010 game. Maybe Rick just knows to stay out of JB’s way after a loss, like he’s back in his Assistant days.
Yeah, i agree a little bit
but sometimes, enough is enough.
This was probably a little hasty, a la CRP’s presser where he chided the media for the Sypher trail etc…but, I can relate to both situations. Sometimes, you have to be the a-hole and let people know that you are not one to be effed with.
I think JB (and CRP) is smart enough to know that he probably shouldn’t have said what he said, but he is also smart enough to know that he’s right.
Just like JB said
Don’t judge on a snapshot. It seems like he’s dealing with a pretty reactionary press corps up there.. I think we benefit sometimes in the fact that our columnists write pretty evenly about UK and U of L, so there’s enough positive stuff to fill columns every week. I feel like college teams who are the only ones getting written about in their area tend to get hit harder by writers who are having to stretch for material.
Agreed
There were certain comments made directly to the media that were uncalled for. Although I would like to read what they wrote to see if any of his complaints were at all justified

Thanks
Yeah after reading that, JB was WAY out of line. That was a typical story… no personal attacks, or even really down on Syracuse. The 6 losses (now 7) WAS the story going into the game. EVERY media outlet, not just the beat writers for the Syracuse Post, made that the storyline for the game. I think it was a little unprofessional of him to take out his frustrations on the two beat writers.

Well I was way off about the press corps
Totally run of the mill article, I guess Boeheim is just an ass?
he may have a history with this reporter
this was just the article that ESPN linked, there may be more going on here than meets the eye.
That said, yeah, he comes across as pretty thin-skinned. (I’ve resolved not to call anyone an ass for the rest of the year.)
"Screech, you CAN'T elope!"
"Who are you calling a cantaloupe, you melonhead?"
I didn't really have a problem until he started attacking what I assume to be department employees.
He asked “Donna” (whom he’d earlier asked for stats as you would a department employee) if she knew his record against Beilein. When she didn’t, he accused her of not doing her job, and said “that’s the way they do it around here.”
Even if she was a reporter, though, and not a department employee, I still thought it was in bad taste. I don’t see why it would be anyone else’s job to know his record against a coach whom he has coached against in years.
"Donna" Ditota & "Mike" Waters are local Syracuse reporters
Donna’s article, the one JB referenced in the video, is linked above by rickmbari

There was no question
JB brought it up himself. Which makes this a bit worse than if someone actually brought it up in the presser.
Obviously a lot chatter over the last two days via print and talk show radio in the Syracuse area has had it’s toll on him.

The rant starts with a parable about Larry Bird at 3:00
He mentions Pitino a few times, but the first question about Pitino comes at 6:43. Boeheim brushes the question off and changes the subject.
"Screech, you CAN'T elope!"
"Who are you calling a cantaloupe, you melonhead?"
I'm concerned Mike is going to jump to the pros
He’ll be blogging his balls off for big bucks, no longer concerned with the gnomes and trolls of CC.
"Screech, you CAN'T elope!"
"Who are you calling a cantaloupe, you melonhead?"
We'll still have Austin Montgomery.
Carmody’s corner becomes Cotton’s corner.
The 2010 NABC Coach of the Year has been beat 7 in a row by the 2011 Coach of the Year.
Boeheim didn’t gain any sympathy from anyone for his complaints. He’s wrong. The 6 (now 7) in a row stat is being widely reported because the fact is unexpected. He’s only drawing more attention to it by complaining.
The Cardinal Curse is beginning to really eat at Boeheim

This press conference got me aroused.
Wait, did I just admit that?

Anybody watching the UK game?
Ref just gifted UK five points before half. foul on a 45 foot shot followed by a Technical foul. Garbage.

If I was Stansbury I would have been pissed too...
I don’t know what he said to warrant the tech, but I don’t think he deserved it cause he already got screwed
refs have to know
that if they make a questionnable call, a tech only makes it worse.

Big deal...
Yer boy Pitino has won seven straight over JB…won’t help you in the Tournament…when you can’t hit threes like you did against SU you’ll be bounced in the first round…Notre Dame will be another Big East team that will be highly likely to go down in the first round…BTW I think JB can “last” more than a few seconds (Oh, I forgot Pitino may have been drunk)

go easy on him
its been a tough year for syracuse. His team’s been exposed. they started off 18-0 and lost 6 of their last 9. and to make matters worse, their arch rival started off 1-4 in the BE and has now won 8 straight. I feel for you hoyahater. Its hard to be you.
