JUCO tight end commits to Louisville
Iowa Western C.C. tight end Ryan Hubbell is the newest member of Charlie Strong's 2012 (or 2011?) recruiting class after committing to Louisville on Wednesday. He was scheduled to visit Northern Illinois this weekend, but cancelled that visit before committing to Strong.
Hubbell, a 6-5, 240-pound sophomore, was considered to be one of the top JUCO tight ends available and is scheduled to enroll in January to compete for the position in spring practice with returning upperclassmen Nate Nord and Chris White and incoming freshmen Larry Jefferson (3-star from College Park, GA) and Hunter Bowles (2-star from Glasgow, KY).
Via a radio interview with the Louisville Sports Live guys, Mike Hughes of Inside The Ville said Hubbell started out as a wide receiver, grew into the tight end position at Iowa Western, and has really improved his blocking.
Assuming he enrolls in January, it will be interesting to see if Hubbell counts towards the 2011 class or 2012. If I understand correctly, Gerod Holliman and Jerrelle Moore left two open spots in the 2011 class that can still be filled by JUCO early-enrollees like Hubbell. I could be (and probably am) wrong.
If he counts towards 2012, Hubbell's commitment will mark the 18th player in the class to commit to Louisville (including Holliman). For reference, on this date three years ago Steve Kragthorpe had seven commitments for his 2009 class.
During his radio interview Wednesday night, Hughes added that Strong will now focus on landing two or three defensive linemen, sign another offensive lineman and possibly go after a running back, though it's not a big position of need.
Here's Hubbell in action:

I noticed you made no mention of Lorenzo Mauldin in the returnees list
Do you think he’ll move back to the defensive side of the ball?
good question, actually just forgot to add him to the mix.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Mauldin and Jefferson/Bowles end up at DE
Being six deep at tight end just seems excessive
He also mentioned that lbs are the primary focus
with the exception of maybe DL
haha
I initially read that as “pounds are the primary focus.”

Big Time Long Shot
If you ask me. But then again, I said that about Teddy, too. That kid is a stud and would be an amazing haul.

Nick Dawson
I think he is waiting until one of the All-American games in January to make his decision between us and Clemson. His dad lives in Louisville and it seems like he is always getting his picture taken when he is wearing some sort of Cardinal apparel.
If we do manage to land both him and Harvey-Clemons, I’d imagine this staff might be discussed as one of the best recruiting staffs in the country again this year just like last year.
I also heard on the radio yesterday that we have a visit scheduled for the NUMBER 1 ranked athlete in the class (I can’t remember the name). His only other official visits are Florida, Florida St, and Georgia. That is BIG TIME!

That may be the guy mentioned above, Josh Harvey-Clemons, but I haven't seen him ranked as the #1 athlete anywhere.
He plays WR and LB in high school, and those are the same schools he’s visiting.
Anyone know the status of Corvin Lamb?
Is he healthy, grades ok, etc.? I saw he didn’t play hardly at all this year and when he did, I only saw him on the kick off team on defense.

Lamb redshirted
His name was called a few times by mistake as he and Jordan Paschal wear the same number. He’s too talented to waste a year on ST. He joined the team late this summer and probably had to play catchup learning the O. The staff knew we were set at RB and thought it best to let him sit back and get more comfy with the O, and then burst in next year.
If I’m wrong on this, someone tell me.

He could really add some zip to an already impressive backfield.
Get that O-line shored up and look out. THEN, we will have the running game that the coaches want and will be able to balance our attack somewhat. But until then, I think we have to pass about 60% of the time to operate at maximum efficiency.

Larry Jefferson
Is projected as a DE/OLB, not TE

When did that change for U of L?
He was quoted when he committed to Strong as saying the Cards recruited him to play tight end. Illinois & Auburn recruited him to play wide receiver, and a few other schoopro recruited him as a DE/LB. This was back in April, so things could’ve obviously changed, but that’s the info I referenced for this post.

Right, blame auto-correct
That’s what I always do.

I'm probably wrong then
I just looked at the positions listed on the recruiting sites. Ma bad.

No worries
He’s still listed as DE/LB on Rivals, makes it confusing. Like Dom Brown, he probably signed with UofL b/c they promised him a shot at playing TE, plus there’s likely more early playing time available here than Auburn/Illinois. If it doesn’t work out, Bedford gets another athlete to mold into a DE/LB.

I heard a rumor that Charlie Interviewed at Texas A&M
Did that happen? I know he didn’t get the job but still sucks that hes interviewing places
yes it would
if he were.

No freaking way Charlie interviewed anywhere.

A&M
I saw a jot somewhere that a source in TX said Jurich refused to let A&M talk to HCCS which would be ridiculous and out of character. It then said in all likelihood A&M in reality never talked to Charlie because he wasn’t on their list. But who knows.
Lots of speculation. Rumor I heard from a “knowledgeable” person (I don’t really think anyone has insider info anymore after the Big12 crap) is that TJ didn’t deny them, Charlie said “thanks, but no thanks”. As a PR move and to save face they spun it off as they were denied. True? I have no idea but that’s what I heard. Charlie is here recruiting like crazy, he’s not going anywhere yet.
-Dustin
Bottom Line
Charlie has the opportunity to stay in this city and be loved for a very long time. He’s getting things done and this town and fan base is very forgiving and accepting.
Kragthorpe wasn’t doing the right things in any facet to get him that love.
Charlie is recruiting well, Coaches good exciting football, he inspires the team and the fans, everyone looks up to him from his players to the 80 yr old booster, he’s turned these players into young men and anyone can get behind that. Winning helps too.
He has a huge decision really, stay here and become a legacy and create something truly great here bigger than any previous coach. Or he can take that call to a bigger named school and be another link in the chain.
Of course money is always a factor… I hope we can keep up with the bigger salaries
I also saw that TAMU was his alma mater (it's not), that they had already interviewed Air Force's coach (they didn't), and that Sumlin has accepted and will make it official today (we'll see)
The rumor mill is cranking non-stop, and we haven’t even played won our bowl game yet. There will be more rumors from even better schools for every year Charlie does stay. It is better this way, than to have no schools even considering our coach for a spot.
Gerrod Holliman
Since this article mentions his name, does anyone have any updates from this kid as to whether he can/will still enroll at UL this January or will he wait until next spring/summer or has he fallen off our radar altogether. He sounds like the kind of kid who can come right in and play right away.
Anyone think Benavides will go to the NFL?
Saw that he was “liable” to declare for the draft somewhere.
ALL HAIL
