Anton Gill Commits To Louisville

Rick Pitino is on the board in the class of 2013, and in a big way.

Anton Gill, a 6-2 shooting guard out of Raleigh, NC, has committed to Louisville. The junior is ranked as the No. 43 overall player in his class by Rivals.com.

"I talked to coach Pitino about 15 minutes ago," Gill told Scout.com. "I committed. I’m excited. The facilities are great. The gym is amazing. I really like the system and coach Pitino."

Scouts across the country have raved about Gill's attitude and work ethic every bit as much as his scoring ability. It sounds like an absolutely perfect fit.

Meet your newest Cardinal commit:

This is a big deal.

I love the lefty 2 guard/wing player

It’s an absolute curveball to defenders, especially when combined with quickness.

Does anyone else sense that Ricky P Jr. is responsible

for a lot of our latest success. I think he really balances out Daddy real good and I think Daddy P actually listens, not to mention Jr. is starting to become a proven recruiter. I think Ricky Jr. is the future even though my name is ps3thefuture. Might have to change my name to RickyPJr.thefuture!

I have only one problem with Richard

And it isn’t really with him. It’s with second generation coaches.

Ray Meyer > Joey
Eddie Sutton > Sean
Butch BVK > Jan
Gene Bartow > Murry
etc.

I guess some second generation coaches have worked out well but I can’t think of any. Anyone?

I'm hoping Pitino can land another two guys in the top 50 at least.

Our roster is so deep now that we’re probably already set to have a top 20 squad, even though a lot can happen before then. If the staff lands another two heralded players, look out for a Final Four team (reminds me of this year’s team.)

by Get_In_My_BELLY_ on Dec 21, 2011 6:09 PM EST reply actions

And by Pitino I mean the collective coaching staff.

Let’s see Wyking, Keatts and Little Richard further prove themselves.

Yup...

top recruits will continue to come if we WIN…. I dont think we need the top recruiting class every year, however you do need a mix of solid players with the right attitude.

Im all for any top 50 guy who has that attitude…

NOT BAD...

Looks like he’ll play more of a scoring point guard for us tho…Hopefully there working to sign a legit back-up for Gorgi . Thats what this team really needs

by aaronstrange24 on Dec 21, 2011 6:29 PM EST reply actions

Don't count Price out yet...

He has a lot of potential. I think if you put about 30 lbs on this guy (see Gorgui), then he could be a monster. He has those long arms…

by FredoKY on Dec 21, 2011 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

I think he was being sarcastic

In that we already have a back up for Gorgui, but he is developing and we are lucky enough to be able to let him do so. Zach Price was a 4-star top 50 player so I always get confused when people say we need a backup to Gorgui…. We have one!

Two years away

I said before the season he would be of very little help this year. I based that on having him play a few times. Someone jumped my case thinking that was too small a sample. I spend a lot of game time watching players, not the ball. One sees more that way. Guess he was wrong and I was right. Unfortunately.

by cbcard on Dec 21, 2011 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

is this sarcasm?

indefinite means they don’t know

by irish2705 on Dec 21, 2011 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

if I'm not mistaken, Blackshear was listed as indefinite, or for the season..

CRP seems to have routinely overstated the length of time players will be out.

If I had to guess

they will be slow bringing him back since he reinjured the same area. They are likely to be ultra-conservative this time.

Wait, I was talking about the wrong guy

was thinking about Blackshear’s shoulder, not SVT’s knee.

And yes, it seems like there should be some kind of estimate. As far as I know, they have never disclosed the exact nature of the injury – which they certainly should know by now. It’s all very strange.

by rickmbari on Dec 23, 2011 12:16 AM EST up reply actions

I know we’d all like to see classes like UK and UNC pull in annually, but I think Pitino can do more with a good crop of players in the 30-60 range than any coach in America. There’s more variability with guys in that range – some will be stars and others won’t pan out at all – but they’ve generally still got a lot of talent/potential and are likely to stick around longer than top 10-20 guys. Give Rick 3-4 classes in a row of those types of players, and add in 2-3 Chane/Wayne type recruits, and we’ll dominate. Unfortunately, we haven’t been getting those 2-3 top end guys, and we’ve been replacing them with 2 and 3 star guys. Hopefully that’s starting to change.

by _TheGainesShow_ on Dec 21, 2011 6:45 PM EST reply actions

Russ is one of those lower tier guys we got....

And I’d prefer him over a big name anyway. You know we’ll get our 4 years from that guy, you know he’ll be committed to the team, and you know he’s going to give it his all. Some of these “big names” are used to success and don’t feel like they have to try or play as a team.

by FredoKY on Dec 21, 2011 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

ranking mean bat crap

Try our last Final Four team. Not one starter was a top 150 player. Probably not even a top 250. Some guys get better and some don’t. See Brandon Bender, Carlos Hurt, etc.

by cbcard on Dec 21, 2011 8:42 PM EST up reply actions

Carlos Hurt was the closest I ever followed a recruitment and the most excited I ever got about one

So seeing how that career went, forgive me for being jaded about the recruiting show.

Also, I think I followed him and TJ Ford on a website called uoflcards.com. Anyone remember that? This was back when we were “surfing the ’Net”

by uoflcard on Dec 21, 2011 9:19 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Well that’s just flatly not true. Palacios was a top 20, five star recruit. Dean, Garcia, Jenkins, and Wade were all top 50-75 guys. Ellis was top 100 in most rankings. Larry was top 100 in a few, and just outside it in all the others.

by _TheGainesShow_ on Dec 21, 2011 11:38 PM EST up reply actions

Am I missing something here?

Are you talking about the 2005 FF team? Because if you are, and memory serves me right, Garcia, Dean and Palacios were all Top 50-100 recruits??? In fact, Palacios was an honorable mention McD AA and some thought he was short-changed (due to injuries his senior yr) by not being included. Again, I’m getting older so I could be imagining things, but I think my statements are all correct, although I’m not certain that Palacios was a “starter” in ’05?

I'm more excited about hearing about a great attitude now than I am seeing a freak athlete

With how much we have enjoyed the last couple basketball and football teams due to the team-oriented hard work, and how successful it has been for both programs, I am pumped to have another talent, willing student for Pitino to mold. I will take that all day over Calipari rolling the ball out for a new set of guys each year that spend their evenings preordering their custom Mercedes

I'm not trying to pee in anyone's Wheaties here, he looks like beast and I hope he comes to Louisville.

But, I’ve made up my mind to not get too awful wrapped up in a kid who’s still 2 years away from signing his LOI.

Been heart broken too many times by a 17 year old kid simply because he’s indecisive

Hahahahaha

I know right. I just know how it makes me feel when I watch these highlight reels and see updates from games where these guys are going off; and then, they back out at the last second like a one night stand with out a condom.

Can’t do it anymore. When a kid commits to us a few months before the signing period, I get excited. When a kid commits to us 2 years before he’ll be on campus,….. there’s just too much that can go wrong for me to get hyped up

Props Coach P

We’re looking great this year and pretty solid into the future..

by brazilnut on Dec 21, 2011 11:04 PM EST reply actions

Who will this kid be playing with?

SR – C – Gorgui (maybe), SG – Russ, PG – Bullet, SF – Hancock, PG – Hendo
JR – PF – Chane (maybe), SG – Blackshear (maybe), PG – Ware, C – Price, SF – Angel
SO – PG – Terry Rozier, SF – Ryan Taylor (maybe)
FR – SG – Anton Gill

It looks to me like we have the backcourt shaping up well with Rozier and now Gill. What we need is a big man to back up Chane or to step in and start when he jumps to the league after next year. Even if Shear jumps after next yr we will be set with these guards coming in, but losing Chane down low may be the biggest hole for this team.

by drhustle on Dec 21, 2011 11:15 PM EST reply actions

Gorgui is not a maybe

He’s a true student athlete. The only way he doesn’t play four years is if he gets his degree in three.

Don't forget

WE have a great local kid for 2013.. Ballard Product PG: Quinten (sry if i mis-spell) Snider. This kid has a great handle, is really quick (not siva-like, but close) and is a knowck down shooter with a great passing instinct.

So Potentially
SR – The gorgster (FML Bobby V) m RUShotS ShotsMITH, Luke Hancock, (3) WO Bullet, Hendo
JR – Chane B, Wayne B, K Ware, (Those 3 o so Athletic OMG) , Price, Nunez (5)
SO – Terry Rozier, Willis? (1)
FR – Quinten Snider, Anton Gill, (2)

SO thats 11 Scholarships of 13, meaning Ricky P Jr and Wyking Need 2 bigs, hopefully atheletic PFs like chane

However it’ll probably look like this
SR – RUShotS ShotsMITH, Luke Hancock, (2) WO Bullet, Hendo
JR – Chane B, Wayne B, K Ware, Price, Nunez (5)
SO – Terry Rozier, (1)
FR – Quinten Snider, Anton Gill, (2)

Leaving 3 open slots for 3 bigs – 2 PF and 1 C

I believe that Snider is class of 14.

by Cards4th on Dec 22, 2011 2:45 AM EST reply actions

I wouldn't count on Gorgui being back next year. The power rankings have him as the 12th best center in the nation this year.

However, he is IMHO underrated so when he plays a lot of the guys ranked above him and smashes them; his NBA stock is going to rise and we may lose a center. I’m talking about Gates, Yarou and Drummond all getting owned. Davis may get it too, although he may not drop b/c of “potential”.

I don't think Gorgui is going anywhere

The guy understands the value of an education and I think feels honored to be able to go for free while playing a game he loves. Don’t believe me? – he speaks 5 languages, wasn’t sure if you had heard

by I WantReeceBack! on Dec 22, 2011 8:42 AM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

Gorgui isn't going anywhere after this year. Go watch the interview he had with the media the other day.

This kid really doesn’t care about anything right now except getting a degree, and Louisville basketball. They even asked him about his future in basketball and his answer was that his family was blessed and he has everything he needs right now, and he’s happy.

Maybe after next year, when he has 3 degrees, he’ll be looking at moving on.

Southpaw 4 Star doin' work son!!

Solid verbal commitment for our Cardinals!! Any 4 Star recruit out of Raleigh, NC is a huge steal from any of our competition. Let’s hope AG10 (coined the new nickname right here right now!) continues to earn that 4th star.

I know I slacked off after my sophomore year after verbally committing to staying in high school all 4 years…

I'm psyched though! We got a commit!!!!

It’s been waaay too long
12/15/10 Purvis commits
12/20/10 Negus Webster-Chan commits
5/2/11 Purvis decommits
Summer 11- Strike out on Danuel House, Chicken Knowles, TJ Warren, Rodney Purvis (again), Alex Poythress, Kris Dunn, D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, and Robert Upshaw. We had real shots at all of these kids, but couldn’t land them. Quentin Snider (class of 14) commits
9/11/11 Terry Rozier commits

And that’s how it’s been until today.

One thing you have to say about UK's recruiting is that almost ALL of the elite players have UK on their list

Obviously not all will go there, and many are surely looking at what they see as a shortcut to the NBA. But I think recruits see them as the school they think all the best players want to go to, so the more elite level guys that have you at least on their list is a very good thing for our recruiting in general.

Just look at Coach Strong. That’s what he is doing getting first a Teddy on board, then building from there. Make it a place the better players see other better players wanting to go to.
