Calipari Has Been Obsessed with Pitino for Years

In this week's Louisville Courier-Journal, sports columnist Rich Bozich wrote a nice piece on John Calipari's envy of Rick Pitino. However, for those who have been following Calipari and Pitino for the past two decades, this isn't news. Calipari has been obsessed with Pitino for years.

Let's take a look back at just some examples of Calipari's long-standing fixation with Pitino. The complete list is too long for this note. Here are some of the more memorable Calipari bites:

  • In his book, "Hello Everybody, This is Cawood Ledford," legendary and long-time Kentucky Basketball announcer Cawood Ledford described a visit from Calipari's UMass team when they traveled to Lexington and faced Pitino's Kentucky squad on December 4, 1991. Wrote Ledford: "The most energetic one of the (UMass team) was the coach, John Calipari, whose clothes and sideline behavior were so much like Rick's that it was almost comical."
  • In a March, 2011 article published in Sports Illustrated, writer S.L. Price on Calipari: But he's still not above calling editors to savage writers he dislikes, and he takes a child's delight in zinging ESPN columnist Pat Forde—co-author of a book with Pitino, Calipari is quick to say—who has detailed Calipari's perceived misdeeds in print and on television.
  • ...Later, in the same article, Calipari is quoted: "I would just tell you: I respect (Pitino), respect what he's done over his career." Then he yells in a voice thick with sarcasm, "And thank him for all the help he's given me over my career!"
  • In 2008, Pitino published his book, "Rebound Rules: The Art of Success 2.0." Less than two years later, Calipari's book hit the shelves. Its title? "Bounce Back: Overcoming Setbacks to Succeed in Business and in Life." As Cawood put it, almost comical.
  • Pitino's Louisville team lost to Calipari's first Kentucky team in the 2009-10 basketball season, in a game played in Rupp Arena at Kentucky. Months later, former Kentucky player John Pelphrey brought his Arkansas team into Rupp Arena to take on Calipari's Wildcats. Pelphrey, one of Kentucky's famed "Unforgettables," has his jersey retired and hanging in the rafters of Rupp Arena. When Calipari was asked by a member of the media if he had ever faced an opposing coach whose jersey was retired in his team's home arena, Calipari responded: "Well, if I recall, Pitino's got a retired banner hanging up there and he came in here and took an 'L.' Hmm...look who was on Calipari's mind again, in the middle of his team's SEC schedule, weeks removed from the Kentucky-Louisville game.
  • In April of 2011, Calipari was asked if whether he was rethinking his policy of filling his roster with prospects who only play one season of college basketball. Calipari responded: "Now, who knew that Eric Bledsoe, who I loved to death, was able to leave after a year? He didn’t play in the McDonald’s game that year. He was behind (Louisville guard Peyton) Siva in all the stats and everything else." Interesting that Calipari could have compared Bledsoe a number of top recruits, but he picked Peyton SivaPar for the Calipari course
  • In Calipari's first season at Kentucky, he tried to schedule a practice at Louisville's Freedom Hall
  • Calipari showed interest in coaching the Dominican Republic immediately after it was announced Pitino might be coaching Puerto Rico's national team.
  • Having accepted the Dominican coaching job, Calipari staged a midsummer exhibition game in 2011 in Louisville's KFC Yum! Center
  • Calipari has been squeezing Pitino recruits since taking the head coaching job at Kentucky. First, it was Marquis Teague. Now it's Gary Harris. Calipari also tried to court former Kentucky Mr. Basketball Elisha Justice to Lexington after he had committed to Pitino and Louisville. Justice kept his word, and had an effective freshman year at Louisville.
  • Asked about former Pitino guard Edgar Sosa, who played on Calipari's Dominican Republic team, Calipari said: "Somebody had to teach that kid the pick and roll."
  • And the most recent: Calipari was asked last week about the Kentucky fans camped outside of Memorial Coliseum in Lexington to secure tickets for Kentucky’s Big Blue Madness tip-off to the basketball season. Calipari's response: Cal’s answer: "It’s a unique thing. There’s no other state — none — as connected to their basketball program as this one. Because those other states have other programs. Michigan has Michigan State. California — UCLA has all those. ... North Carolina has Duke. It’s Kentucky, throughout this whole state, and that’s what makes this unique." Could Calipari simply have forgotten that Louisville was a city in the state of Kentucky? Probably not. Said Calipari in December of 2010: "The state is driven by the city of Louisville."

Of course, it's easy to understand why Calipari is fixated on Pitino (not counting Calipari's possible deep-rooted psychological problems and anger issues). Pitino has coached in Five Final Fours. Calipari has had two Final Fours vacated (the third, it is only reasonable enough to say, is still pending). Pitino defeated Calipari's No. 1 ranked UMass in the 1996 Final Four, en route to Pitino and Kentucky's sixth NCAA Championship. (Calipari's 1996 UMass team later had its Final Four vacated by the NCAA). Pitino is the only coach in the history of college basketball to lead three different schools to the Final Four, is a five-time National Coach of the Year and is a lock for the Hall of Fame. Calipari is the only coach in the history of college basketball to lead two different schools to the Final Four and have both of those Final Fours vacated. Pitino is one of only 12 active Division I coaches to have won a National Championship. Calipari has never won a National Championship and has a long, long row to hoe if he ever wants to see his name mentioned in the same sentence as "Hall of Fame." Pitino has a winning record versus Calipari in games coached head-to-head, and perhaps most telling, Pitino has never lost to Calipari when it matters - in the postseason. Pitino has never lost a same season rematch with Calipari, and is 3-0 versus Calipari in postseason play, including 2-0 in the NCAA Tournament.

After Calipari's latest geographical jab, Pitino responded: "Four things I've learned in my 59 years about people. I ignore the jealous, I ignore the malicious, I ignore the ignorant and I ignore the paranoid."
"If the shoe fits anyone," he added. "Wear it."

Kudos to Pitino for sticking up for his program and its fanbase. Like any other opposing coach Pitino might face, the only time Calipari crosses Pitino's mind is when Pitino is scouting Calipari's teams, three or four days before gameday. But for Calipari, Pitino is something he just can't seem to shake.

wonder .....

if Cal will take over at UL after Pitino leaves ? It only seems logical if he’s so envious of him.

Lets get it on!!!!

Maybe, if...

…Tom Jurich retires and the University of Louisville hires Mitch Barnhart in his place. Jurich wouldn’t touch Calipari with a ten-foot pole. He prefers future Hall of Fame coaches who’ve won NCAA Titles and whose Final Fours aren’t vacated. Not be a grammar Nazi, but you do have one typo in your comment. It’s not logical, it’s laughable.

In his dreams, Magnoliacat. In his dreams.

And our nightmares. No, you keep him. It’s a match made in heaven.

UK trolls are going to attack this thread like a buffet of grits & roadkill.

It is creepy when you see it all together. I used to think he ran his mouth to win over UK fans but now I don’t know.

Keep the trolls out! &...

…If they make their way into this thread, I’ll shred them to pieces. The coaching records and numbers speak for themselves. And so do the coaches. Cards78, I think you’re correct on both accounts, I’m sure Calipari does it to rile up the UK fanbase, but there is certainly some deep-seated obsession there as well. Look at this way: what other college basketball coach in the country has referred to Pitino as many times as Calipari has when it was absolutely off-topic and/or completely unnecessary? Pitino knew who and what he was talking about when issued his rebuttal this past week. Calipari is indeed jealous and malicious. The dude’s just not cool.

The thing I find funny

is how people want to yell and scream that Cal is not jealous of RP. Of course he is, any coach out there who doesnt have a record like RP would be somewhat jealous. Rick has won championships, more games, final fours, etc etc. Cal cant match his record period.

Now with all that said there is nothing wrong with being a little jealous or envious. Its just like driving down the road and seeing the bigger nicer house or the big pretty boat. We all saw " boy I would like that"

Smart guys push to achieve…. the rest cry and make excuses why they cant or don’t want it.

Cal's not jealous of Rick.

We’re supposed to be jealous of Kentucky. Didn’t you read Austin’s post?

Great post

It’ll be hard for any Kentucky fan to refute those facts, although I’m sure they’ll manufacture something they’ll convince themselves works.

I'm amazed that we haven't seen more blue trolls here by now.

Could it be that they have no rebuttal?

The book thing is especially retarded.

Could anyone say with a straight face that Cal wrote a book on an identical, relatively uncommon subject matter that Rick just happened to write first, and it’s completely unrelated?

Calipari is not jealous of Rick Pitino. Seriously

I know it’s fun to say he is; but, he’s not. I know I’ll take some heat for saying what I’m about to say but I’m not wrong so I’ll say it anyway.

He might be envious of Rick’s Championship but that’s about it. He could care less about vacated wins/ Final Fours. He wants a championship and I’ll bet him and any other coach who’s been in the game as long as he has is envious of other coaches with a ring; but that is not specific to Rick.

He’s Killing Rick on the recruiting trail, beat him head to head in his first 2 years there, and he’s been to the Elite8 and then the Final 4 while we’ve been knocked out in the 1st round.

He has a laundry list of NBA players Super Stars, including LeBron James, Kevin Durrant, Rajon Rondo, and Derick Rose setting up shop in Lexington.
He has the guys that every High School player idolizes playing pickup games with his team and giving them shout outs on twitter.
He will continue to bring in #1 recruiting classes.
He might be a gigantic douche-bag, but he’s not jealous of Rick Pitino.
He’s doing everything he can to kill the competition, Rick/ Louisville, and that doesn’t make him envious,… cut throat and ruthless? Yes. Arrogant and Cocky? You bet.

Jealous? Don’t count on it, no matter how much you want to believe it’s true it’s not.
Think about it, he’s managed to steal Teague, will probably grab Harris, and has managed to turn UK into an NBA farm team. While that might not be in line with what college basketball is “supposed” to be about, it is what any elite recruit IS about.

I honestly can’t fault Rick for responding but I wish he hadn’t. If I was a UK fan I would be laughing my ass off at any Louisville fan who said Cal is jealous of Rick. The best way to shut him/ them up is to beat them, period. I don’t care if the game is in Rupp, just beat them and they can’t say shit. Beat them and get this team to New Orleans and there will be crickets coming from Lexington.

Thing is,

We all know he has no reason to be jealous, for all the reasons you state. That what makes all the things he has said, and will continue to say so “comical” , and kind of sad.

Again, I think most people believe he has no reason to be jealous, but for some reason known only to Cal’s secret self, he is.

Writing the same book is eliminating the competition?

Not saying I don’t agree with your original post, but there are some question marks on that lists of similarities.

Calipari

is everything that is wrong with college basketball. The NCAA shouldnt allow recruits to meet those NBA players it sways where they go. The NBA has absolutely ruined college basketball with the rule of you having to play 1 yr then you can go into the draft. Its sad that a major university is ok with a coach that does nothing but shuffle in a bunch of kids that just want to get paid and not learn a damn thing.. Those kids see Calipari as a jumpoff to the NBA where as Pitino gets guys that WANT an education and give back to the community.. He just disgusts me, Id rather have a philanderer who can only last 15 sec but recruits non 1 and dones than a douchebag thats having a hand in ruining college basketball

May Not Be Jealous, But He is Definitely Obsessed...

There are varying types of jealousy. Calipari may not need to be jealous of Pitino when it comes to salary, recruiting, or fan boys. But Calipari clearly has demonstrated, and continues to display an unhealthy obsession of Pitino.

When it comes to basketball, Calipari has NOTHING on Pitino. Pitino has more Final Fours, a winning record versus Calipari head-to-head, is undefeated versus Calipari in rematches and in the postseason, and has more NCAA Championships than Calipari. And before anyone goes mouthing off about Calipari’s Kentucky teams versus Pitino’s Louisville teams, let’s allow that one to play out. We’re only two games into that story, and it’s ending is far from over.

Calipari knows his basketball coaching legacy is forever tarnished. He’s the only coach in the history of the game to reach to Final Fours and have both of those Final Fours vacated. He is hardly respected among his peers. He has very few friends in the head coaching business. He is in his 50s and eons away from being considered Hall of Fame worthy. He’s had more Final Fours vacated than he’s had not vacated. It’s a 2:1 ratio. And the the third one’s still pending.

His number one recruiting classes mean NOTHING. He doesn’t know how to build a championship program, which requires a combination of experienced upperclassmen and blue-chip recruits. What’s my evidence? His coaching history. Last year’s Kentucky team would have NEVER reached the Final Four without Josh Harrellson and DeAndre Liggins, both of whom were upperclassmen and NOT recruited by Calipari, but by Billy Gillispie. Calipari’s best recruits will NEVER see their junior or senior years, because they’ll be in the NBA. His only experienced upperclassman on this season’s roster (that is worth a hoot) is Darius Miller, and again, he was recruited by Gillispie. No NCAA team in the modern era has EVER won a National Championship with a bunch of freshmen. (Syracuse had ‘Melo, but also had some great upperclassmen). If Calipari couldn’t win the big one with FIVE first round NBA draft picks, the Great John Wall and a superb upperclassman (who he didn’t recruit) in Patrick Patterson, what makes anyone think he’ll be able to do it in the future?

As I said, jealousy has various meanings and I do believe Calipari feels resentment against Pitino because of his rivalry and what Pitino has accomplished that Calipari has had tarnished. I do not believe Calipari is jealous of Pitino in the popular sense of the word, in that he wants to BE Rick Pitino (in the 1990s, earlier in his career, I think that was the case, however, as Cawood Ledford pointed out in his book).

No matter which way you slice it, Calipari is obsessed with Pitino. Jay Wright may dress dapper himself, but how many times do you hear Wright (or any other coach for that matter) taking unnecessary and off-topic jabs at Pitino?

If the shoe fits anyone, wear it.

I would have to disagree

If he was only eliminating the competition there are several other schools which warrant more attention than LVL at this point.. Duke, Uconn etc etc… He however seems to always resort back to a stab at LVL

I agree that there is some truth to what you say… but I still believe that there is a jealously which causes him to ALWAYS resort back to a comment directed to LVL and RP

I see what you are saying

and think that will get him by for a while… I just dont think that will get him by permanently. Hes gonna need to win eventually, or the fan base will turn. Just as they did on Tubby

"Rick Pitino won two here..."

He’s got to be tired of hearing that right? Maybe that’s why he’s always taking jabs at him.
