John Marinatto speaks following Big East presidents meeting
Brian Ewart of VUHoops.com has the scoop.
After the meeting broke up, Big East commissioner John Marinatto made the following statements:
- "The presidents voted unanimously to authorize the commissioner to aggressively pursue discussions with a select number of institutions that have indicated a strong interest in joining the Big East Conference."
- "The presidents are also actively considering changes to the conference’s governing bylaws to further solidify the membership."
- Commissioner Marinatto said that UConn president Herbst was "terrific in the meeting, promised to do anything she can to help strengthen the Big East."
- They didn’t name any target schools, but noted that they will be football-playing members.
- The service academies fit the academic and athletic profile of the conference. That profile was described as "high academic standards and strong athletic performance."
- TCU Chancellor Victor J. Boschini Jr. "had never wavered" on Big East membership and was "very positive" during the meeting.
- Marinatto said he felt better about the conference’s future than before the meeting.
Basically, expect Navy and Air Force to receive football invitations soon and to hear numerous reports of talks between the Big East and East Carolina "heating up" over the course of the next couple of weeks.
Other than that, nothing of particular significance.

Sounds like crap to me. Especially the UConn part..
The TCU piece could be a little shaky too. Just sayin.

At least Navy and AFA
are not shit at football. And they have a national following. So we’d have 9 if TCU stays and no one else abandons ship, right? Need one more, I guess. Notre Dame? Just kidding. How about Southern Miss? I like them better than ECU for football. Eh, whatever. I hope the Big 12 comes calling soon.
Greenville and Hattiesburg
Two places that you can’t get to from here. Or from most any place.
I actually wouldn't mind Southern Miss.
I got family in Hattiesburg. Some of the few family members I actually like.
I went to what was effectively the 2001 C-USA championship game @ ECU
One of my fondest UofL memories ever. Ran into one jerk ECU fan but what fanbase doesn’t have them? I thought they had an amazing atmosphere. ECU was always my #1 choice to add next (not counting fantasies like ND, Penn St or an ACC re-raid), at least in FB only. There are probably a few high school BB programs I’d take over their’s.
Still, cmon Big 12

ECU BB on the rise
I can’t argue historically with your comment about Pirate BB. However, I think it is a program on the rise.. they have FINALLY gotten a good coach (Jeff Lebo) and are investing heavily in facilities… give them a chance and you won’t be disappointed. The football program is already there as far as Big East football is concerned. Don’t let the 1-3 record fool ya…look for them to make a run at the C-USA title. Turnovers have cost them in each of those games. I’ve gotta believe they will get that fixed. Hoping to join ya’ll in the Big East.
Tell you what. Give the fans your address and they can go knock on your door and show you that you can get here and back

Another person who knows nothing about Greenville
No, PGV airport is not an airport hub (at last check neither was Louisville), but is a decent enough airport that has just been modernized with your tax dollars…lol… Because of ECU’s medical school, Greenville is home to the biggest and best medical center east of Duke. It’s heart center is a leader in robotic surgery and many are finding their way here for treatment. Come to Greenville on football Saturday and you will be treated to our southern hospitality and a big time college football atmosphere…
Pretty Sure
Big 12 is going to call Marshall before us.

Why would you want one more?
Either go with 9 or go with 12. Nine gives you eight conference games and you play everyone each season. Ten would mean either nine conference games (we know how annoying an uneven conference game split is now) or you don’t play everyone each year. Twelve obviously gives you divisions, scheduling options, and a CCG.

Why Southern Miss?
Why do you like them better? They ran off the best coach they ever had. Haven’t been a serious contender since. Unless they bring Brett Favre back in to play, I don’t think they are heading in the right direction.
We can call this the Big Least - (desirable schools left for a BCS conference)

remember where you came from
Do you think some of the existing Big East members felt that way about Louisville joining the league a few years back? You were, after all, a C-USA school at the time. Don’t turn your nose up… embrace the new schools that join the league.. work together to make it a better football conference than it was.. Big East has a history of effectively responding to these ACC raids…
The only disturbing thing about this meeting is the agreement to increase bylaws.
I’m assuming making an exit harder? This would be a signal to me that everyone is ready to lock in.
I do not like the proposed Big East one bit.
by James Sutherland on Oct 2, 2011 6:40 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Not necessarily
Look at the ACC. Everyone but Florida State and Maryland wanted a $34 mil buy out but those two negotiated it down to $20 mil. It was passed unanimously but mainly to keep up appearances. If you vote against raising the buyout amount, it sends the wrong message, even if you don’t have plans in place to possibly exit.

Navy? Air Force? Army? ECU? UCF? SMU? Gross.
You better believe that UConn is still chomping at the bit to join the ACC and TCU will totally join the Big 12. Like I’ve said before, I’ve LOVED the Big East but without Pittsburgh and Syracuse the league is deeply hurt in several areas of athletics. If we get the chance, we need to bolt. The sad thing is it makes our football absolutely terrible and neither Pitt nor Cuse have been particularly good in recent years.
If we end up in this giant mess of a league, I hope UConn stays for basketballs sake. I couldn’t give two shits what Rutgers does.
Ditto
TCU Has to say they are tottaly committed for right now……yet from what I am hearing from relatives in Texas, is that TCU would reconsider IF Texas agrees to share some of its TV revenue with the rest of the BIG 12.
If we go to the Big 12, we would stay BCS Eligible in a league that we could make some waves.
Basketball wise, we take a drop BUT w/o Pitt and Cuse, the BE becomes an ordinary conference.
My faith is in Jurich. He will work his butt off the get the Cards into the best situation for the UofL.

Sorry but the Big East football is dying YOU need ECU and others but Keep wishing for something better and I will see you in CUSA real soon

The UCONN and WVU Presidents left after 30 minutes, walked out?
Big East BB only teams want to kick out FB teams? What?
What are you talking about?

The only positve thing about all this
is hopefully it will make everyone forget that we just got beat by Marshall, our at least put it in background m¢

I was so excited about the prospect of being in the Big12.
New teams, good teams, new rivalries, new places to visit.
I would rather get spanked by the likes Texas and Oklahoma than beat Air Force and ECU.
I was thinking about the loss last night and finally got something good out of it.
You know Strong is thinking, as are other programs looking at a new head coach, “If he can’t beat Marshall at home, maybe we need to give him more time to mature as a head coach.” At least this loss might solidfy his presence as our coach for a while.
I know…making lemonade out ot lemons.
Lyons' preferences
would you rather get beat by Marshall than get beaten by ECU?

Honestly, the new look Big East is basically going to be nothing more than the old Conference USA on Steroids. No centralized geography and it’s going to be a step above Non-AQ conferences and a step below BCS Conferences. Hopefully all of this super conference garbage at least leads to some kind of real post-season solution for college football.
I hate to be so negative, I just do not see this faring well for the Big East.

Sounds good, as I can't come up with a better plan
It would be great to land in a stronger conference, but if we can’t let’s do our best to keep the Big East together.
navy and airforce
the two programs everybody needs to strengthen their conference. everytime i read something like that i hope its a joke.
Viva Siva
There's no secret conference full of realistic options out there in non-AQ land, like many assume.
Boise State as a football-only addition would be great but a couple folks told me that’s not even on the table. I’d want to see Houston join the BE before the service academies.

How quick do you think JCC could put together a team? Duke-UNC wouldn't have nothing on that rivalry.
Duke/UNC: We’re only a few miles from each other.
Louisville/JCC: We’re somehow basically the same school.

For a minute I was thinking we should just leave the non-football members and merge with the Mountain West.
Giving us Boise, TCU, WVU, as teams that are generally ranked every year and of course us, and USF.
Then I looked at the membership and realized that would be the worst basketball conference in the history of ever.
Nevermind.

From Eric Crawford's latest column:
The Big East is squarely in pursuit of Navy and Air Force in football. Not glitzy, but consider: Syracuse and Pittsburgh, averaged combined Sagarin ranking the past three seasons: 51.7. Navy and Air Force, 45.4. Pittsburgh is a tough football loss for the Big East. But TCU, Navy and Air Force leave the league stronger.
by UL is my hot hot sex on Oct 2, 2011 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions
I see your point. Accordingly it's hard to argue about anybody's performance as a hinderance to admission right now because both Navy and Air Force would crush us.
Long run, I just feel like the Big XII offers more growth potential. And the perception of the BE is just going to be bad. Which normally wouldn’t matter, except that the whole system used to crown champions in football is nothing but what a few people think about your team.
by James Sutherland on Oct 2, 2011 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions
yep, still better than Syracuse though in football

So you're saying 2010 Syracuse would face teams like
Maryland, Air Force, SMU, Notre Dame, Army, and San Diego State and then only have one loss?
2009 Syracuse would have one loss while facing Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Air Force, SMU, Notre Dame, Hawaii (in Hawaii), Army, and Mizzou?
2008 Syracuse would face Wake Forest (twice, while they were still decent), Pitt, Notre Dame, and Army with just one loss?
Yeah, no.
by geoffissiffoeg on Oct 3, 2011 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions
Agree; in 2010 especially, Cuse & Navy had schedules of equal strength
Though in 2008 & 2009, Syracuse & Pitt both had a considerably tougher strength of schedule than Navy & Air Force. Even though AFA is in the MWC while Navy is independent, those two service academies both avg around the 70-80 range (of 245 FBS/FCS teams in Sagarin’s rankings) in terms of SOS for the last 5+ years. In the last 3 years, Pitt’s average SOS is in the low 30s, Cuse the low 50s, according to Sagarin. If you go back 5 years, Syracuse’s SOS drops to the low 30s. Louisville’s SOS would average right at 60 the last 3 yrs and in the 40s the last 5. This includes 2006-07, the outlier of Big East football just before the league’s elite coaches were poached. The BE finished 3rd that year overall. Very low odds of that ever happening again.
It’s interesting to discuss but I’m not sure how much weight one should lend to NCAA football SOS rankings. 11-12 games = small sample size compared to 30+ in NCAA basketball. Looking at the teams on Navy’s schedule, I don’t see it getting much more difficult for them in the future BE.

So you're saying Syracuse would only have one loss with a 2009 schedule that had Ohio State, Pitt, and Mizzou?
Keep in mind Cuse lost to Pitt in 09 so you’re really saying that 2009 Syracuse would beat both 2009 OSU and Mizzou.
by geoffissiffoeg on Oct 3, 2011 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions
That's what I've been saying for awhile now
Syracuse is zip in football, Pitt used to be good but hasn’t done much lately. Navy is stronger than either one of them, and unless TCU backs out, the new Big East will be stronger than the old.
"...and the present, for us, is something that we really look forward to."
- Rick Pitino
Must be tough for Navy
having Rice and Delaware on the schedule.

Hypothetical + apples & oranges thought:
It’s funny to me how outraged Jurich/UofL & many fans were when Petrino bolted right after asking for an upgraded contract b/c that’s essentially what UofL would be doing to the Big East now if UofL receives/accepts an invitation to join the Big XII.

Were going big 12.
Just wait a little longer.
How about the BE adding Trinity?
We wouldn’t beat them but they have a good ranking and following.
Credit to Mengus for finding this stat:
From 2003-2010, Navy and Air Force were 124-77. Syracuse and Pitt were 93-102.

It seems Pitino is the only one talking. I hear he is scheduling a BE rally at Porcini’s.
