Mike Sanford is no longer a member of the Louisville football staff
Charlie Strong met with members of the media on Monday night and confirmed what most had already expected; former offensive coordinator Mike Sanford is no longer a member of the Louisville coaching staff.
"Mike Sanford is no longer with our coaching staff, and both sides have mutually agreed," Strong said. "Mike Sanford is an outstanding football coach and an outstanding person, but whenever I make a decision I have to make a decision in the best interest of our program."
Quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson was given play-calling duties in the week leading up to U of L's Oct. 8 game at North Carolina. Despite Sanford not traveling with the team to Chapel Hill, Strong said after the game that he would be re-joining the staff in a to-be-determined role. Apparently that's not going to happen.
Strong has denied the rumor that there was an altercation between he and Sanford at practice on the Tuesday following Louisville's home loss to Marshall.
As for the future of the offensive coordinator position, Strong says that's something that will be re-evaluated once the season comes to a close. He says there are no plans to make any midseason additions to the staff.

Strong also said it was more than just a difference in philosophy
but declined to expand, just reiterated he acted in the best interest of the university.
We thought Sanford was that right?

Nope.
I was not excited about him. Meyer didn’t take him with the rest of the staff from Utah to Florida. Hot hot pointed out that he was basically UNLV’s Kragthorpe.
yeah
I wasn’t very excited about him either. Failed head coach doesn’t give me a lot of confidence.
Sounds like we have no where to go but up.

paul petrino?
not really advocating, just throwing it out there.
Careful man, there's a beverage here!
Hate to say it........
Rich Rod? Maybe…… Or someone of that lineage. Myself I would rather see a Petrino Pro-Style offense, but at this point I just want to see points on the board.

Rich Rod isn't an assistant coach, He will have a HC job next season when the dust settles I'm betting.

don't forget
he’s got a little bit of a stench around him from the entire failing to meet NCAA compliance at Michigan and whatever that sketchy stuff is that happened at WVU, I’m too lazy to look it up.
I doubt it’d happen though.
I know that his assistant OC that was at Michigan with him
Is currently unemployed. But coaches have there little clicks and connections, I say the next guy will be connected somehow or another. I would like to see the Brohms comeback though.

If he would be willing to be an assistant (which I highly doubt)
Then HECK YES run and do not walk. If he comes not likely, then he’d be here for only a year or two. But someone with his pedigree doesn’t go w/o a HC job for long.

Here's what we need
This exact same defense + a fast-paced spread type offense that moves the ball around a lot while still maintaining close to a 50-50 run-pass ratio. Go get that guy!
I guarantee I wouldn't call 2 running plays up the gut
on 1st and forever and 2nd and forever. Maybe at the 1-yard line snapping into my own endzone, but not at the 15 or 20 or whatever.
Sometimes those plays are needed
I don’t mind seeing those to give us punting room when you’re backed up against the endzone, but not all the time, especially when you are closer to the 10 than your own endzone. Those drives where they used the runs on 1,2 & forever, that drive was basically over after the 4-5 consecutive penalties.
Maybe but you clearly send the wrong message to the opponent
It says that even the coaches think they have no chance to move the ball against the defense. What a confidence boost for that defensive team. Plus a couple of quick slant passes should have a very high completion percentage and could possibly result in a big play if the receiver can shake that first defender. I think running in the the open field has a lot more promise than head down into a wall of 8 defenders, especially with this O-line. Just saying.

At that point in the game, I don't think the opposing team is looking for messages in the coaching decisions
They’re looking at the scoreboard and the way things have gone on the field.

Seriously
We just need someone who can put up even an avg. amount of points. With how awesome our defense will be under Strong/Bedford, just avg. point production gives us a shot at going undefeated every year.
I'm pretty sure Bedford could handle both duties.
I’m on the train.

When has the play calling been...
…up to par this year? I can tell you if they don’t get some direction on offense this year, we may wind up winning 2 games all year. 1 offensive TD in 11the quarters? That my friends is atrocious

Grab an SEC position coach
Why don’t we raid someone off of petrino’s staff. what about Auburn’s. It would have to be better than what we have now.

You need a system team of coaches
Our experience with Petrino is that you will need a very tight knit group of coaches starting with the OC and proceeding in the order of QB coach then OL coach. If Watson can show improvement, he should be given the reigns to basically rework the staff and bring in his own team who basically stays in a room 24/7 scripting plays and working on individual instruction. Petrino/Petrino/Summers was kind of a freak storm, if we can get close to that we would be golden. I am not completely sold on Carter and Borbely or Dugans at all. Watson is in his first year here. This is basically his audition. If he can make gains with the obstacles he has confronting him then Charlie should give him carte blanche to bring his own guys next year, and the current staff should know this.
I would love to hear an interview with the O-line coach (Boberly) and hear................
1. why he thinks they are so bad
a. lack of talent? – poor recruiting,
b. bad/lazy players
c. not smart enough
d. other
2. can this group be salvaged, and if so, how?
a. better instruction
b. more effort
c. whatever
2. what he intends to do about it
a. do we need Juco’s next year?
b. can this group be salvaged?
by Carolina Cardinal on Oct 18, 2011 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions
My guess at his answers:
1. youth
2. time
2. a we might have benefitted from jucos this year, but next year our returning players will be older+stronger+more experienced=better; b: yes, as they develop and mature.

your worst enemy
Charlie should identify the OC he had the most trouble scheming his D against and go after him.
My thoughts exactly.

But....
He’s 3-4, 0-4 in the SEC. If he loses his next game to UK he could sure be available.
Hahahahahhahahahaha
No team in the SEC is losing to UK this year. 3-4 is better than 2-4, and in the nations toughest league. He’s in what? Year 3? They’re not firing him any more than we would fire HCCS.

Isn't Mike Leach looking for a job? >.>
I know that would never happen, but I bet he’d find a way to use all the weapons we have on offense.
