Fling It.
Okay, I know last year we were a running team with Bilal pounding it, but I think we need to change it up this year.
We're at around 50/50 passing to run if you pull out sacks from the run game:
Passing: 129 attempts
Running: 131 (147 - 16 sacks on TB and Sunny)
When we pass, we're averaging 7.41 yards per attempt against 3.3 yards per run, and if you take out Chris Philpott's 2 runs for a total of 48 yards... we're averaging 3 yards per run. So if we run 15 times at our average, we're making it 45 yards. If we throw fifteen times and miss 5 of them we're going to hit 74 yards.
I know that there's only three things that can happen when you throw the ball, and two of them are bad. And that we've had 8 interceptions this season to 4 fumbles.
I also know that you run the ball to open up the passing game. Well, the passing game is wide open right now, we need to pass to open up the running game, and that's not going to happen if they know that when Dominique comes into the game he's going to run or that we're almost always going to run on first down.
The Other Thing:
We should also start rolling with the Hurry Up when TB is in the game. Stein is good in the slow mo huddle style, but TB seems to do better when they've got him rolling right along. He's steadier at a fast pace, and I think we've all noticed that about him. I don't know why it is, but if the shoe fits, wear it. Get some of those cool flip boards Oregon uses that have pictures on them to represent the plays and start flinging that ol' pigskin right along...
One other thing:
Can we please nickname Teddy Bridgewater "Tuberculosis"? He's going to make you cough up blood! It's ominous, but not too scary for the kids.

Very much agree that we need to pass more.
Just looked at the NFL box scores from yesterday. Most NFL teams throw more than they run. And yesterday, only 3 winning teams ran more than passed and they ALL averaged about 5 or more yards per carry. So it seems that IF you can run successfully, you can run it 50-60% of the time. But if you CAN’T run the ball successfully (4= yds per carry), then you should throw it 50-60% of the time.

We need an OL to buy time to fling it though.
Hopefully this will come with more experience.

You can use quick passes like the running game
And we should do that more often. Once again, we ran it twice that I recall against UNC and both times picked up a minimum of 5 yards. It’s that play where Teddy takes the snap under Center, stands right up and whips it out to the flank. Unless I missed one along the way, I don’t believe that play has yet to fail to gain us 4-7 yards minimum. I’d like to see us run it about 5-8 times per game, especially on 1st Down or if we’re in a 2nd and long situation.
You had me allll the way through the article.
Until tuberculosis. Just have to pass on that one (pun intended).

In all seriousness and love for my dear Cards:
I hope we make it to a bowl this season. I really do. But I would be fine with it if we scrapped all expectations for a Bridgewater bridge year (yesssssssss). Totally agree with the post. Let the kid start flinging it out there, throw some more interceptions, learn some hard lessons and get ready to kick some ass next year.
It’s not that I’ve given up on the present. I watch every game with the hopes of winning, or at least beating the spread (which we did at UNC), but at this point in the season with a fresh QB, OC and QB coach transition, let’s start working out the kinks like it’s August.

With our O-Line........
……a QB trying to throw vertical will end up horizontal. Gotta be quick routes or we will run out of QBs.
Chi-Daddy is the dumbest 34 years old we've everr had play for U of L
His crossing routes are always 2 yards short of the first down. You’d think after 16 years in the program he’d figure that out by now
He was taught that by Coach He Whose Name Shall Not Be Spoken
I remember one game tracking passes on third down. The first one thrown past the first down marker was with about five minutes to go in the game.
Fling it
Sounds like you’re trying to throw a booger. TB would be ok, but not tuberculosis.
I agree that THIS team needs to throw to open up the run, because our O Line can’t handle it every week. They looked great aginst UK
I agree that quick passes to the flank and/or a quick slant route crossing the middle should work. OR roll TB out like we would with Stein, run a criss-cross pattern with Chichester and Parker and flip a short 5-6 yard pass or RUN baby run.
Kind of like what he did with Dominque on that TD pass
TB needs to be able to not just step up in the pocket, but develop a 6th sense, and scramble to the open field when he starts to feel pressure. He needs to become a threat to run.
i hear the "better o-line" calls, but did you see what happened when he had time?
He had nowhere to go. What was up with that? he DID manage to get some time from the O-line sometimes, and it looked to me like he had his head on a swivel but had nowhere to put the ball. I think between the lack of blitz creating too much coverage to throw to and some young kids out there, even if he gets time right now the long balls will be very very few and far between.

That's why we should focus on the short crossing routes, screen passes, quick outs, and swing passes
With the poor protection our QB’s have had, it is normal for their head to be on a swivel. And agree, there is rarely time for a long look down the field. That’s why the short pass is best. Then, if the corners start playing up, we can have the receiver fake the quick out or slant and go deep. Even this play will not take much time as the ball will be throw immediately after faking the short pass.

Imports babeee
We have five Swiss nationals on the O-Line. Lots and lots of big holes.
like a lot of people have said
and i should have said in the original post,
we don’t have to go downfield. we can throw quick short routes, just do more of that so that we get them to back off the o-line/qb a little bc they don’t think the ball is going to be there for very long.
I know the coaches WANT to be able to run the ball and think a good football team needs to be able to run the ball, but.............
we apparently do not have the O-line to do that. And if our coaching staff can’t see the wisdom of this, I will be very disappointed.

I saw a few designed rollouts in the first half against UNC.
I didn’t see any in the 2nd half.

well
there is a concern with rolling TB out… namely that he’ll get injured. We have Stein coming back soon, but if TB gets knocked out before Stein is back that leaves us with Dominique Brown, and that means we’re done until Stein gets back. Not to mention we need to keep TB healthy for future seasons… even assuming we have Damarcus coming in next year.
Speaking of TB, he’s doing incredible so far. Not putting up the numbers Stein was, but getting better.
I realized I kind of argued against my own fling it proposition, but I still think throwing the ball is our bread and butter right now, we just have to keep it fast and short.
