Enas Kanter is pro-grade. honestly
And by pro grade, I mean, he has been paid to play basketball according to the New York Times:
Turkish Team Says It Paid a Top Kentucky Recruit
By PETE THAMEL
ISTANBUL — The best recruit in Kentucky’s top-ranked recruiting class, the Turkish center Enes Kanter, received more than $100,000 in cash and benefits over three years from the professional team he played for here, according to the team’s general manager.
Can't wait to find out who paid the rest of the team.

This could be a devastating blow to Kentucky if Kanter is ruled inelgible
There frontcourt is already thin
Yeah, major blow for UK if he is not eligible. I would not be surprised to see the NCAA turn this into a Renardo Sydney type situation and just not rule him eligible and wait it out until it is too late.
yea this could be a heavy blow
but id wait and see whats what before jumping to conclusion .. luckily for uk this is getting addressed BEFORE he plays and has NO ties to calipari
"UK ....enough said"
Just because Enes hasn't played doesn't mean Calipari is in the clear
It still could be a problem for Calipari if it comes out that Calipari knew that Enes was ineligible for NCAA due to receiving funds, but continued to recruit him and lie about his knowledge after the fact. I’m not saying that any of that happened, but if what’s in the article is true, someone knew about it all along.
wrong....if the kids does not play, there is no penalty......
nothing to penalize……

A problem can be different than a penalty.
Even if there aren’t penalties it would still look really bad if Calipari is caught knowingly violating an NCAA rule, attempting to violate a rule, or lying to the press.
The point is that Cal has said in interviews that Enes wasn’t being paid. It looks like that probably isn’t the case. If we find out that Cal knew it wasn’t the case and lied to the press, then “it could still be a problem for Calipari.”
hate to say it..
But don’t think that is true, .. it isn’t like he lied to the FBI.. its just the press
no penalty only a(nother) hit to his reputation of attracting drama/controversy
which is not exactly news but will be easy bait for journalists who love to talk about Calipari and register the ensuing increased # of hits on their websites.

i'm sorry for not being explicit. . .
When I say “problem,” I don’t mean “problem with the law.” I mean the plain dictionary definition, “a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome and needed to be dealt with and overcome.” I consider any hit to a reputation a problem for a coach.
In this case, there is no hit to anything,
at the very worst, as a writer put it today, Calipari rolled the dice and didnt hit a seven. Does not mean anyone did anything wrong. Truthfully not even Enes did anything wrong. The simple fact is that what he did while he played for that Club in Turkey may, MAY mind you, end up making him ineligible to play for Kentucky. That is the single and only issue. All of this was reported to the NCAA from day one. There was no hiding anything and no trying to get around anything. Cal said from day one that the new ruling appeared to make it possible for someone in Kanter’s position to play NCAA ball. That is the only thing that is in question here. Is he eligible. Same gamble that Mississippi State took with Reynardo Sidney last year. No one was claiming that they did anything wrong, but Sidney was not allowed to play for a year. We could face the same thing, who knows.

agree 100% BUT
we know how it will go… next thing you know you will have fans saying www paid kanter’s salary or some made up bs like that…lol.. oh well let the “good times” roll
"UK ....enough said"
Dude put down the koolaid, you have had WAAYYY to much.
This is just another blow to his image. It really does not matter if this whole thing is even true or not, the general public just see’s this as ANOTHER issue the arises when Cal is around, period.
Just like with the Sypher case, Pitino’s reputation is forever scarred. Cal’s wound just keeps getting deeper and deeper and deeper.
-Dustin
i guess i must have drank too
much of the kool-aid, because a kid who might not be eligible in the ncaa because of possibly getting a salary over in turkey is eactly calipari fault how??? i mean uk wasnt the only school trying to get this kid so obviously this new info about him getting a salary wasnt known, and unless some new info surfaces then really this is just an eligibility issue, not a recruiting violation or some other bs
"UK ....enough said"
It matters because it's in the main newspapers causing negative attention to your program.
Like I said, it does not matter if Cal is not a fault, it’s just ANOTHER negative item that swirls around Cal and every program he has been with.
-Dustin
Seems to me that simply makes them.....................
wrong.

Cal’s rep can’t get any worse. Papers and fans already have him pretty low. I don’t think Cal cares very much about what the press or fans of rival teams think about his reputation. I’m certain his only concern is not getting busted for recruiting violations and he probably spends very little time thinking about his press.
Also having a recruit ruled ineligible is drastically different than getting strange in a closed restaurant on one’s reputation.

If UK fans would stop going out of your way to complain about all this attention, you would be a lot less annoying.

No hit to anything?
The statement being debated here is that if Calipari is caught knowingly violating an NCAA rule then it is a problem for him. Drink the blue kool-aid if you want, but if Cal is caught trying to cheat, then he loses the plausible deniability that he has enjoyed in the past. He would be proven a cheater.
no shit but he isnt in question
they are just trying to see if kanter is eligible .. what rule could calipari have violated????… as far as i can tell offering a kid a scholarship isnt a violation.. now if we play him before he is cleared then you might have a valid reason to bring up calipari …lol you guys are fishing for things that aren’t there…the only hit uk or calipari will take from this is a depth chart hit…maybe calipari haters might see this as hit to his rep.. but him breathing is a hit to his rep. to them
"UK ....enough said"
So you don’t think it’s a problem if Calipari knowingly recruits someone who isn’t eligible in hopes of it not being caught? That doesn’t strike you as shady?
It would be one thing if UK went to the NCAA and said “take a look at this kid, there’s a question of his eligibility.” But as I understand it, that’s not what happened. The kid played pro ball, and the team he played for has gone public with that info. Calipari is caught with his hand in the cookie jar and now you want to say, well, if the NCAA lets him do it, he’s fine, and if not, he didn’t eat the cookie.
dude everyone knew he played pro in turkey
what we didnt know is that he was paid salary IF in fact he was, calipari, like uw and a few others thought this kid, was paid for expenses and lodging you know things that the ncaa allowed, now the gm drops this salary info bomb and if true means kanter wont play for uk… you are assuming calipari knew that this kid was paid a salary.. but you would have to be a moron to knowing recruit a kid who you know is being thoroughly look at by the ncaa that has been paid a salary, especially if you dont have his former team in your pocket … again your fishing for violations ,,, i also find it very odd that his former team stands to get 6 figures in transfer fees if he is found ineligible… but i will wait to all facts are presented before making any final judgement

Time for another installment of
what UK fans are saying:
“Damn big city liberal hippie newspaper in need of circulation so they go after us.”
- KSR comment
no IF he did get paid it just means he is ineligible
no recruiting violations, no uk involvement just kanter screwing up his eligibility… but i think its kinda odd that this turkish team stands to make money if he is found ineligible… hope they have a paper trail to prove their claims… but if he is found ineligible then uk will be weaker but far from screwed, .. glad uk has bigs coming in next year
"UK ....enough said"
They've sent all of the financial statements to NCAA according to article
So yes, it would seem that they have a paper trail, even if they do have something to gain. Kanter also has something to gain… increased exposure in NCAA.
by Chris Redman is my hero on Sep 8, 2010 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions
well either way
whether he is or isnt eligible, hopefully uk and the ncaa do their job and get it sorted out… i mean the kid was allowed money for travel, lodgings and other expenses BUT they said it was salary and if it was salary he will not be in the blue and white next year..glad we picked up 6-10 vargas and t-jones plus harrellson has gotten better, otherwise uk would be royaly f**ked

Partly true
Would a national newspaper send their college sports reporter to Instanbul if San Jose State was trying to sign Kanter? Maybe if Calipari was their coach.

I actually think it is completely true
But you dig your own grave…ala Tiger Woods.
If Jeff Overton crashed his escalade, I doubt we would ever hear about it.
The issue is you can’t look to be Famous and Anonymous at the same time. I’m trying really hard to not reference Hannah Montana here….so I will roll with a sports reference.
UK’s basketball program is similar to Tiger Woods in that they use the media to their benefit (see Big Blue Madness and the greatest day in UK History quote at the NBA Draft) and then when it doesn’t benefit them, they chastise the media for putting them under a microscope.
Congratulations to the University of Kentucky on developing a VERY strong brand, maybe the strongest in college basketball. Reminds me of another strong brand

Was expecting a Charlie Strong reference.

not rooted in fear or bias........this is a simple case of one guy
trying to make his “bones” so to speak, by attempting to take down Calipari. Who has done nothing wrong. Thamel is trying to do what no one else has done. If he does it, he makes a name for himself and solidifies his career for many years to come. Look what the Sutton scandal did for Tipton. Tipton didn’t do anything wrong, he simply made his name by going after Sutton.

the tellling part about the enitre story
Oak Hill would not touch him and Oak Hill would drop scheduled games with two teams if those teams took pEnas. They must have realized he was PRO (or they at least cared).
lol washington, florida st, usc, and ucla all went after him

Any body remember that Cosby show episode?
where Theo decides that his dad should give him $100 K since he’s not going to college and that’s how much college would cost?
Is that essentially the same argument UK fans are making as to why its ok Kanter got paid since kids go to prep schools and get scholarships?
Maybe Bill should straighten this one out.
by johnnyjoejohnson on Sep 10, 2010 4:10 PM EDT reply actions
dont see any uk fans saying its ok
if kanter was paid, but we are saying lets wait untill all fact are presented before we automatically assume kanter was paid the 100k.. remember his turkey team stands to make 6 figures if he is found guilty, and lying to the ncaa and american media is nothing to them.. no trouble for them if they are caught lying… but then again kanter probably will be found ineligible if its true either way i wish they would find out the truth

i agree but untill the ncaa comes out and says they have documents
making enes kanter ineligible then i cant just go by the word of a team who stands to make a nice chunk of change if he is found ineligible.. in the words of mike singletary “Can’t do it” but i am not naive to think it isn’t a possibility, infact i think it is very possible and likely but ive always been one to deal in truths and try to see both sides to every story so i will wait to see what the great heads of the ncaa clearinghouse will say and proof they have before making any judgement
