Strong finish not enough: Cards fall to UK 16-23

Losing to UK sucks, period. But we are who we thought we were--a rebuilding program with some holes on defense and several gaps in talent across the board. We're not here to talk about the past but we know what type of situation Strong inherited with this football team. The effort and execution in the 2nd half was promising and there's no need to hang any heads--the guys played their balls off until the end.

Playing the "if" game: Bellamy's injury led to Pascley getting several open looks that were dropped. Arguably as big a difference in the game as Randall Cobb's playmaking abilities.

One last note: Bilal Powell's 80 yard touchdown run. Welcome to the face of our program, sir.

Feel free to say whatever you need to say below.

don’t give locke, cobb or hartline any credit now!

Only thing that kept it close

was UK penalties. Defense looked MUCH better in the 2nd half, offense still has a long way to go. Powell was definitely a bright spot in the running game though.

by PaulRogersIsMyHomeboy on Sep 4, 2010 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

One stat that sticks out more than anything to me, given our recent history:

Penalties:
UK: 11-90
UL: 4-30

We have issues, no doubt, but we weren’t expecting to win the BCS here. But that right there shows the change in coaching.

by twistedwedge on Sep 5, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

A little concerned...

About Coach Strong’s clock management in the 4th quarter. No hurry-up on the FG drive that pulled us within 7? We should have been in hurry-up from the 6:00 mark on. We were way too slow and lackadaisical out there.

The choice not to kick onsides with 3:30 to go is a little off-putting but I guess you put confidence in your defense. If it’s me playing Madden I go onsides there.

And I really have no idea why he didn’t use his timeouts sooner on UK’s run-out-the-clock drive. It’s like he didn’t even care to get the ball back.

by DerekFetters on Sep 4, 2010 7:32 PM EDT reply actions

1) I think the hurry-up would be a problem with our offense. I just don’t know that they could handle it. Besides, there was still 3:30 on the clock when we were done. A little more pace would have been nice, but I think he was going for execution. Didn’t want to make a mistake.

2) An onside kick is such a low percentage play in real life. We’d held them to 3 points and just over 100 yards in the second half. He made the right call, we just didn’t come up with the plays we needed on defense.

3) How was he supposed to use his timeouts? We only had two, which means you can’t use the first one until third down or you waste them. The problems was that UK converted on 1st down the first time, 3rd down the next (after we used our first timeout), and 2nd the next (rendering a timeout pointless at that point since they just needed to kneel on it).

by CARD_G6 on Sep 4, 2010 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed...

He should have used at least one of them prior to the 2 min warning…

by 4ul4life on Sep 4, 2010 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

the reason he didn’t call the timeouts sooner is because they kept getting first downs or second down and short, would have just been a waste. should have been quicker on that last possesion though, not necessarily hurry up quick just quicker. we are really hurting at qb and wr position, but thats 3 yrs of dipshit for you. i think the defense will get better and better, they only gave up 3 pts in 2nd half, thats really good considering what the first half looked like.

by ville 606 on Sep 4, 2010 8:22 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Indeed.

So much for all the predictions of UK winning going away. Our defense didn’t run out of gas in the 4th.

by CardinalDude on Sep 4, 2010 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Defense played much better in the 2nd half.

Our offense STUNK, except for Powell’s TD. Froman was staring at one receiver from the snap at the ball. And UK penalties kept it closer than it probably was.

Defense played to my expectations, offense did not.

Quincy Miller.

So I know this sounds rumor-millish, but oh well. I just got off the phone with my friend who was in the front row of section 109 (student section. he was the C in a C-A-R-D-S body paint deal) who happened to be standing with a certain Quincy Miller and Deuce Bello for about 15 minutes. He said Quincy came up and put his arm around him because he saw they were going crazy and wanted to be a part of the action. Of course, my friend asked him how he liked it and insisted he come here. His response was that he loved it and was going to sign this week. Take it or leave it, but the man said it.

My friend said Deuce Bello wasn’t that into things, but maybe he just didn’t like football.

Either way, it was a fun game, the crowd was surprisingly great (I’ve never seen the crowd stand that much at a game). Strong is going to take us places. Give him time.

Don't believe it.

If you meant signing as in “committing” maybe good news. But signing can’t happen until either this November or next April.

Think I watched about 20 minutes total

in about 3 1/2 hours (thank God for beer and Kentucky bourbon). I think my UK friend would say the same. Boring game, boring teams, but the team with more talent won. Congrats to the Wildcats. You definitely exposed our Kragthorpe-era (lack of) talent and leadership. However, I saw some things to build on and we need to give HCCS some time to get things under control. Go Cards! Beat EKU Colonels (which shouldn’t be too daunting?).

Who is this Joker?

We just ended the summer long sports drought between basketball and football where you have to endure horrible baseball games that require playing each other 5-7 times just to determine a winner. It was the first game of both of our seasons! You must not love Football…

Do you walk out of the basketball games with 10 minutes left in the second half too?

No I'm the guy the watched every Kragthorpe era

game whether recorded, live, on the computer, etc.-every last freakin’ second. I’m the guy that stays objective amongst my love for the Cards. It wasn’t an entertaining game. I admit I was drunk when I wrote the above comments in this post (hence the poor spelling and grammar), but now having a hair of the dog bloody mary this Sunday morn I stand by my words. Doesn’t mean either team will be boring the whole season, but they were boring yesterday. Things will improve, but yesterday wasn’t exactly quality football-even for a rivalry game the first day of the season.

See other comments and posts about the level of play and see if others don’t think the same thing.

I'm also the guy

that when I go to a UofL basketball game I get there early and stay to the very end (win or lose)…all the way to the end when the cheerleaders join the band with My Old Kentucky Home-and I stand up and follow along. Are you that guy or did you know that that even occurs?

MnPDX

by kentuckybred on Sep 5, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Well two things:

1) Everyone knew both teams would run the ball ALOT. Hency why there were alot of short yardage plays. Neither team had the QB or reciever depth to run deep routes and throw the ball all over the field.

2) The cards had to run the ball and try to chew the clock the whole game. When you have a DL that is as shallow as ours, you have to be conscious that they need to rest. A quick 3 and out just wears them out even quicker (i.e. trying to throw the ball everywhere). Strong had to manage the game so we would have something that looked like a DL at the end of the game.

Thats just my $0.02

It was 2 games

All UK for the 1st Quarter + 4 minutes of the 2nd Quarter. Then it was even, with moments when Louisville was the better team. HCCS adjusted nicely at Half, and Louisville’s young D shut UK’s running game down a lot better from then on. A turnover at a really bad time killed a threatening UofL drive in the 2nd Half, or this might have been a 3-point game.

I think Louisville will go into league play either 3-2 or 4-1. They’ll be bowl eligible by season’s end, because HCCS will get them better and better as their experience deepens.

When I think of this defense with Campbell and Dorsey, it could be very solid by late in the season. When I think about the OL getting better and opening holes for Powell, I see a minor bowl in December.

Couple of bad injuries in the wrong spots could really hurt us.

Don't count on us beating Oregon St.

The Rogers brothers are really, really fast. Faster than Randall Cobb. Honestly, that might be our toughest game of the season, especially considering travel. They lost to a VERY good TCU team tonight. So hopefully 3-2 heading into conference play. Then we’d have to go 3-4 in conference, well above expectations. And even then, does 6-6 get us a bowl? It didn’t in 2007. I would not get my hopes up for a bowl this year, just steady improvement, and laying a foundation for the future

by DerekFetters on Sep 4, 2010 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah.

Back to back drives that would have made a huge difference in the game. Dropped a pass right on the numbers on third down and then that deep skinny post that would’ve put us in the red zone. We ended punting both times.

Again, Bellamy and Campbell would have made a huge difference today, not to mention Dorsey.

Hey

Hey, we were lined up in the right places and overall looked kinda like we were coached and knew what we were doing out there. I’d call that improvement. We can move on and try and get as many wins as we can and UK can move on to their nonconference cupcakes and all their SEC homecoming games.

Cincinnati is losing to Fresno State

If they can’t pull this out then they’ll just go on the list (with us, UConn, and Pitt) of Big East teams who lost this weekend. While not all the Big East teams lost, I don’t think beating Coastal Carolina is something in which we can take pride.

SOS doesn’t matter when you play each other. Why is this even an argument?

I’ve never seen so much vitriol as I experienced today in the PJ’s. I’m sure it’s the little brother complex, but get a grip. Taunts of “Music City Bowl” and “7-4 season” (newsflash: D1 teams play a 12 game season) make you look stupid. Taunting a 70 year old couple in Wendy’s make you look pathetic.

Sure, it’s meant to be derogatory implying the UofL is inferior to UK but I don’t understand its usage. Is using this implying that UL and UK both have the same mother and father? Who are these people that give birth to universities? Why do UK fans insist that we are in the same family?

Joker

is not a bad coach but HCCS has a powerhouse recruiting staff and major in-roads all over the South, especially the hotbeds in South Florida. It’s only a matter of time before we start pulling in major recruits (especially on defense) not just here and there, but often, and every single year. What Petrino did in attracting top offensive talent, Strong will do on the other side of the ball. He already is, but of course they’re not on the field yet. Give Louisville a quality spread offense with talent in the key positions and a nasty defense and Louisville will OWN the Big East perennially. Just a matter of a couple years more to go to wash the Krap taste out of our collective mouths, then the Cards return to their former glory.

by CardsFanTX on Sep 5, 2010 5:56 PM EDT reply actions

strong def will get louisville back

and dont count out jokers recruiting ability… i mean uk has been getting good talent these last few years just not florida, type talent, woodson, burton, tame, woodyard, lindley, m.johnson, little, locke.connor, cobb are just ones off the top of my head and next years class looks to be the best since jokers been here… i look for the joker vs strong teams to be very competitive and will make for a good rivalry

General Cards situation

Anyone who has watched Florida, Miami, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, etc., where the coaches came from, knows Louisville does not have that kind of talent. Coach Strong and the others obviously need to put on a positive face and keep looking forward. But fans should know that the old talent is not there. If you understand the kind of defense Strong and Bedford brought, which Slade may not, you realize that the old players did not execute it. They panicked and executed the old defense. This is an understandable response from kids, but they will be much more successful when they can ditch old habits and buy into what they’re being taught. The new guys come by this more easily and may contribute more quickly, because of that. Bellamy is in a class by himself as a receiver on this team. Beaumont has great hands and can run routes, but is simply not fast. Hope he scores his touchdown, but the lack of speed will keep him from being a consistent TD threat. It is hard for even Groh to overcome a less than Big East caliber quarterbacking corps. There is essentially no connection except gear worn between these guys and the Greg McElroys of the world. Those guys have character and desire, but not talent. If Campbell ever gets to play, we will all see someone who is a totally diferent caliber of player. Heath is a real football player and deserves every accolade he gets, but Campbell has played in a different football world. Players like Demar Dorsey and Michaelee Harris are so far above the talent that was here when the new coaches came that there is almost no comparison. Bottom line – coaching staff is as good as advertised, maybe better. The players already here were as bad as advertised, maybe much worse.

by villevisitor on Sep 8, 2010 7:49 PM EDT reply actions

General situation - 2nd chapter

The Cards need some help. They need media help. They need more from the Courier Journal. They need more from alumni all over the country. There are recruiting hotbeds everywhere. South Florida is definitely one, but so is Hotlanta. Check out Hoover,Prattville, and Mobile, AL . Check out the players in P’Cola. The players need a reason to come to Louisville – an atmosphere that reeks of football in the same way that Tuscaloosa, Gainesville, Austin, Clemson, and Tallahassee do. Grantland Rice said that football is a religion in the South. If Louisville wants to be big time, the entire populace needs to be as rabid about football as about basketball. One of the biggest needs is an upgrade of Kentucky high school football. If you don’t know what I mean, check out Hoover High School or the big schools in South Florida. Pay quality coaches. Support youth football. Build good facilities. Give them big time press. Turn Kentucky into the same kind of football breeding ground you find in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.
