Russ Smith out 8-12 weeks with broken foot

Tough news for a kid who's been dealing with injuries since he got here.

U of L:

University of Louisville freshman guard Russ Smith suffered a broken bone in his right foot and will be sidelined for 8-12 weeks.

Smith will have a screw inserted into the fifth metarsal within the next few days at Jewish Hospital. The Jones Fracture occurred during a short practice session on Saturday.

Smith played a year of prep school basketball at South Kent (Conn.) School last season, averaging 19.7 points and 3.9 assists. He led the New York City Catholic league (CHSAA) in scoring two years, averaging 29.6 points as a senior when he was a first-team all-state selection, and 24.5 points per game his junior year.

Practice begins for the Cardinals on Oct. 15. U of L opens its 2010-11 season on Nov. 16 against NCAA runner-up Butler in the Cards' inaugural game in the new KFC Yum! Center.
