Quick Thoughts

--The rumors about true freshman Preston Brown earning a starting job are apparently true, but what about Daniel Brown getting the nod over Dexter Heyman? Very surprising to see both Heyman and Antwone Canady listed as twos.

--Bilal Powell and Victor Anderson will almost certainly see around the same number of touches, so who is listed first is essentially irrelevant. Still, I suppose Strong's comment about Powell being "the face of Louisville football" wasn't an exaggeration.

--I love Vic and Bellamy deep on kick-offs, but am less sold on Scott Radcliff (ROCKS!) returning punts. I suppose we'll see.

I'm gonna reveal my ignorance here...

I freely admit I’m more of a basketball fan than a football guy, but some of the positions on this depth chart baffle me – specifically, on defense, Fox End, SAM Linebacker, and MIKE Linebacker; and on offense, the three different kinds of wide receiver (X, H and Z?). Can someone fill me in? Thanks in advance!

by rickmbari on Aug 29, 2010 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

They're just terms for positions you already know.

I’m not sure about Fox End since I’ve never really heard that used, but I think it’s the “free” defensive end, or the main pass rusher, usually the right end (lined up on the left tackle to rush the blind side). Sam linebacker is the strong outside linebacker, usually on the left since the offense’s strong side is usually to the right (where they’ll usually run). But if the offense lines up strong left, he and the weakside linebacker can switch positions. The idea is that the strong linebacker is usually a better run stopper/tackler (since offenses typically run to the strong side) whereas the weakside linebacker is a little more athletic against the pass, since offenses often pass to the weak side (since the free safety plays deeper than the strong safety). Mike linebacker is the middle linebacker.

The X, H, and Z receivers are denoted by positions. X and Z receivers are the farthest out from the line, and are usually you’re biggest “deep threats.” A lot of people confuse this as being your “best receivers” but that’s not always the case. They’re almost always the tallest and fastest, though, because they run the majority of the streaks and deep post patterns. The H receiver is the slot receiver, and is sometimes called the Y receiver. He may just as well be the best receiver on the team (like Beaumont is probably our best receiver), but he’s in the slot because of size. Smaller receivers are generally better in the slot because they “hide” in the coverage and are typically put in fewer “jump ball” situations where height is an advantage. Wes Welker is a great example of this. See here for more (note that they refer to the slot, H, receiver as the Y receiver). I would expect us to run several 4-wide sets, though, which means receivers will be mixed and matched based on the play.

Also, the weakside backer is typically given the name “WILL” in keeping theme with the code names.

And to think I thought X, Y, Z receivers...

were called that because that was their position on the Super Nintendo. :)

WTF

I didn’t see Jordan Campbell’s name anywhere…?

by Josh L 502 on Aug 29, 2010 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

???

Is this official because its not on the uofl website and it has Pete Nochta on it and he had been reported to not be playing in this game?

by lamont279 on Aug 29, 2010 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

Champ Lee

Don’t see him anywhere, either.

Excited about Preston Brown, crazy that a true frosh would start at middle linebacker over a guy with as much experience as Canady.

In three years, I can’t wait to be pissed about how one of the Geffrad brothers burned a redshirt. I seriously do not remember him playing at all last year. Another KRAG special.

Wonder what the deal is with Jordan Campbell. Hopefully he sees the field.

Also I don’t see Dom Brown on there anywhere, wonder how (if) they plan on using him?

by CardsFan922 on Aug 29, 2010 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

That has some differences...

Savoy over Mitchell at one end.
Bellamy over Pascley
Kai backing up Doug at the H-WR (which I assume is a slot type position?)
Mike Evans (?) moved from CB —> Safety over Holton
Bellamy on punt returns (Mike gets his wish)
Tim High (hi Tim!) starting at DT

Still no Campbell or Dominique Brown.

Yes

Neither of the Geffrad brothers burned a redshirt they both are R-Fr. CCS doesnt have all the freshman that are on this depth chart on here as well there was too manu guys on the one on here I don’t think coach would burn those guys freshman year unless needed and by the OFFICIAL Depth chart he didnt. Champ is one of the back up DB’s but wont be on the depth chart because most of the positions are only two deep

2 players lost redshirts...

Can’t remember their names, but I was reading an article about it on ditchball. Can’t find it now though, partly because 1) the work PC doesn’t show all the current ditchball information (anyone have a clue as to why that would be?) and 2) don’t have the patiance with my phone currently, but I remember it being about a blowout and the two in question were called in and only played like 7 snaps the entire season. One of the guys felt there was something not right about it from the start and it was confirmed when it was the only game he played in.
Curious about JC too – is it becuase the depth charts were put together earlier and JC hasn’t made it yet, or is it because he’s not practiced enough to be on the same sheet of music as everyone else. Would think that with him being on a talented USC team that it would be a little easier for him to pick up this system, but…
Also, WTF is up with Demar Dorsey? Anyone?

by 4ul4life on Aug 29, 2010 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

Those are seniors

two offensive lineman…..and it was maddening, their redshirts were burned in 2007 (along with Doug Beaumont and Dexter Heyman).

Andrell Smith’s was burned last year – but it was worth it – remember all those catches he had…..wait.

Holton’s was burned last year too, but I think he at least got some good in-game experience. Would still rather have him in 2013 as a RS Senior, but whatever.

by CardsFan922 on Aug 29, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I have given up on Dorsey coming. If he comes that would be awesome, but there is not any talk about him lately which worries me.

I’m thinking JC is probably just not up to speed. He has probably only been in a handful of full contact drills and may not be ready for game speed yet. I hope he gets there soon though and will be a major impact during this season.

Agreed on both

It feels like if he doesn’t play in the UK game, might as well red-shirt him, but that’s probably not the right attitude about the season.

Same with Dorsey – this season at least, only really care about winning the UK game, and those two guys might be difference makers in that.

Preston & Daniel Brown

Daniel Brown is the most surprising name on this list, to me. Daniel was a no-star recruit in the ’08 class that Ron English found less than 3 months before the ’08 season kicked off.

Love to see the young dudes working hard and earning a starting spot. Speaks volumes about the lack of talent, sure, but it’s also encouraging that A) the coaches weren’t playing head-games with the “every position is open” talk and B) the earn your playing time culture this breeds on the practice field. Last year doesn’t matter—what have you done for me lately?

and if I were Will Stein

I’d be pissed that I lost the placekicking holder duties to Josh Bleser

Interesting Statistic

Here is our record for last year based upon jersey color.

Black: 1-1
White: 0-7
Red: 3-0

Campbell

Campbell won’t play in this game because of some standing issue at USC, not because of anything happening here

Things change quickly

The official depth chart was updated since this morning, thus the noted changes.

Not surprised about Daniel Brown. He was working with the first team at the open practice. Really excited to see Dunn in the 2-Deep.
