Pitino confirms Sallie, Coleman will not be Cardinals
In a radio interview on 790 WKRD this morning, Rick Pitino confirmed that Memphis transfer Roburt Sallie and freshman Justin Coleman will not be joining the Louisville basketball team this season because of academic issues.
Each player figured to play a role (Sallie as a shooter, Coleman as a athletic wing) the Cardinals desperately needed.
Huge bummer.
A couple of other notes from the Pitino interview:
--Preston Knowles is out of the doghouse and has been completely reinstated.
--With Sallie and Coleman out, Jared Swopshire and Kyle Kuric will likely battle for the starting job at the three. Good news for those (all) of us in the "Swop shouldn't play the four" crowd.
Get big, Rock.

so....
does this mean they will never be a cardinal, I mean I guess Sallie only had one year anyway but what about JC?
I wondered the same thing...
It seems like he could at least go the JUCO route and play 2 years down the road.

I would hope that would be an option for him, but
I feel like he’s the type of player that thinks he should play for any program right away? But what do I know

Pitino said that Coleman was going to "be a Prop at Marshall."
Not exactly sure what that means, but if he’s going to another D1 school, I think that makes it less likely he’ll ever wind up here.

...I don't know
I don’t think Rick would start Swop and Buckles together. I see Kuric playing the 3 and Swop staying at the 4.
do we win 15 games with that line-up?
seems unlikely without some SUBSTANTIAL and unexpected improvement by some dark-horse players (I’m looking at you, mikey and rock)
I don't know
If Pitino is committed to playing uptempo and rotating players frequently (as he claims every summer about this time) then we may have pretty good depth:
PG – Siva/Justice/R. Smith
SG – Knowles/C. Smith/Marra
SF – Swop/Kuric
PF- Buckles/Goode
C – TJ/Dieng/SVT
If Goode becomes a serviceable player it would mean a lot. I liked the 4 guard rotation we had going two years ago and I hope we can return to that. RP also mentioned Dieng has a 7’5" wingspan. He might be a contributor.
I think George's knees
Have probably guaranteed that any hopes of him playing the four are misplaced.

Russ Smith...
will be a pleasant surprise to us all. I think he may see more time backing up Siva than Justice will. He’s taller and quicker than I expected. His game reminds me of Ramel Bradley’s.
Lets hope for a big day on Sept. 4th....
a win for the Cards and a verbal commit from Q. Miller and D. Bello to lighten the basketball mode
Has there ever been a worse off-season to be a UL fan?
I’m not saying the season’s necessarily going to be bad, but damn, when was the last time something good happened in the off-season?

It depends.
If you’re only a basketball junkie, then a) it’s the worst since Pitino got here, and b)shame on you.
If you’re like me, a football guy, then it’s been pretty damn good.
2005 offseason was worse
We lost Garcia, O’Bannon, Myles, George, and Lorenzo Wade transferred. Then, Palacios broke his foot and David Padgett who had just become eligible from sitting out a year broke his foot (then injured a knee). Neither saw significant playing time that season.
Only bright spots on that team was getting T-Will and McGee, but both were freshmen and had a long way to go.
I remember watching the opening exhibition against Bellarmine and seeing us need a late rally by Dean to win the game left me thinking “we’re in trouble”. He was the only player on that team that could step up and play at a high level. We had way too many freshmen and too many injuries to key returners.
This season doesn’t look so great on paper, but it’s a far-cry from being as bad as 2005-06. We return good players with experience with a little depth. It’s been worse.

not to be pessimistic
but i’m not sure i agree. we at least had the final four fresh in our minds, plus we knew we had a class coming the next year with four top 50 players. after the teague episode and things constantly falling through over the last few years, i’m not going to assume anything until our recruits/transfers/scholarship players are actually in uniform.
i think this is going to be a scrappy, tough, fun team to watch, but there will definitely be some bumps, and i hope that we can get a little bit of assurance about the future on the recruiting trail. i suppose i’ll take blackshear at his word and hope that quincy and deuce follow him.

it definitely sucks
Don’t get me wrong. But, I think our team this season will fare better than the kids from 5 years ago. Siva will be a star. I expect a breakout season from him. He seems like the kind of player that will make everyone around him better. That’s something the 05/06 team definitely lacked with Padgett being such a non-factor. Speaking of him, it’ll be great to have him on the side-lines this year. I think he’ll make a huge difference in our guys’ attitudes on and off the court.
As far as recruiting, I totally agree. Coach P or one of his staff needs to knock one out of the park — and soon. I wish he’d bring his son back up here. Little Ricky was becoming a road dog on the recruiting trail and was instrumental in locking up a commitment from Samuels. We could definitely use him now.
I am certain Calipari will be exposed at some point for his shady dealings. The NCAA are watching him and UK like starving hawks. Sooner or later, he’s gonna screw up and they’ll get him. But until then, yea, Pitino’s staff needs to find a way to compete or we’ll lose out on top recruits more often than not.
And no one is talking about Crean while Indiana cleans up the nuclear waste from the Sampson regime. But, he’s gonna cause problems too as time goes by. Coach P needs to find an edge. A big reason for players to consider coming here.

Damn! Can we please have some good news
I agree Johnny Joe! Coach can’t keep his pants up, every off season someone is arrested, in doghouse or has to be disciplined because of something stupid or we loose a big time recruit or he’s ineligible. Every time theres news its usually bad …I hope we get Miller and Bello because it would sure ease the pain and maybe a commit from Tony Wroten would also be great. Damn ther ehas to be light at the end of the tunnel right? Hate to sound negative but i will be shocked if we get any of these players mentioned…??
Maybe
At least UL is being mentioned by top recruits again. For a while there, after Teague didn’t commit and Chandler decommitted, things were looking a lot worse.

Sosa and Jerry Smith
Did Pitino mention something about these 2 this morning?? I caught some news that he did just wondering what he said??
FFFFUUUUUUU
What a great way to open up a new arena…
I'm officially over the class of 2010
As of NOW my main concern is September 4th. We’ll have Q.Miller, Wayne Blackshear, and Bello at the game… a victory could be huge for the whole program. I know a loss isn’t gonna completely sink the ship, but a victory would be the beginning of a new era. PLAY HARD CARDS

I'm officially over Rick Pitino
Tired of the excuses, defections, transfers, injuries, and 15 second sex scandals. Too bad TJ locked him into that longterm deal.

I'm not convinced a football win really enhances basketball recruiting that much
It wouldn’t hurt, of course… but a crowd that stays enthusiastic for the Cards win or lose would, to my way of thinking, be more important than points on the football scoreboard.
I'm kind of jumping off the Pitino Bandwagon also. I mean the ends have not justified his means at all.
Getting really old.
exactly
How come when he was at UK, you couldnt beat them Bitches,, but we have only 1 final four with him here and 4 people in the NBA… if Tom Juric is smart then he will understand, s far our best class in 211 and if Rick doesnt get us a NC by 2012 then he is gone, I’m sorry cardinal fans I love him to death,, but Rick won the battle but Sypher lost the war, ever since she came out with this, Pitino has been off track. And if Pitino leaves we will never hear the end of it frrom UK fans the “Cal ran Pitino out of Louisville” HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKE

I'm just hoping
SVT gets some playing time out of this. I swear he was good against UConn at home last season. Do Justice and Phares have scholarships now? Kinda ridiculous if they don’t at least get a year scholarship. Happy Birthday, Mike.
