Edgar Sosa signs with Italian team

After receiving heaps of praise over the past couple of his weeks for his play with the Detroit Pistons' summer league team, Edgar Sosa signed a contract with Angelico Biella - one of the top teams in Italy - this morning.

Sosa may have as easy a transition to European basketball as possible, given the fact that former Cardinal greats Reece Gaines and Taquan Dean are also members of this team. Another added bonus is that Western Kentucky's A.J. Slaughter, who played with Sosa for Detroit this summer, also signed with the team this morning.

Sosa will report to Italy in early August and remain there until late May. Teams in Lega Basket Serie A, the most competitive league in Italy, play a schedule consisting of 30 regular-season games and an eight-team playoff.

Coming soon: Angelico Biella Chronicle.

Angelico Biella

Were Reece and Dean recent additions? Thought I saw last night that Biella finished at the bottom of Serie A last season.

doesn't look like Dean and Gaines are on the team this year

Dean just signed with another Italian team and I can’t find a record of Gaines anywhere…

Dean signed with Angelico last week

http://www.attention.cc/bda/taquan-dean-gaines-to-reunite-in-italy/

Taquan Dean couldn’t ask for a better overseas basketball situation. He’ll be heading to Italy in the next couple of weeks after playing for coach Rick Pitino at U of L, and he’ll have a familiar mate in the backcourt — former Cardinal Reece Gaines.

The two guards — who were U of L teammates in the 2002-03 season — both will play for Angelico Biella in Italy’s Serie A league, one of that country’s top circuits.

Assistant coach Luca Bechi said the team had been following Dean since his first appearances in NBA pre-draft camps and that he quickly became its first priority.

"He’s a player with great potential," Bechi said. "He’s a great three-point-shooting guard who is very strong physically and can defend on the perimeter. It will take him some time to adjust, but he has shown great versatility in playing for coach Pitino."

Wow

3 Cards in Italy. It seems as though Pitino still has some “connections” in the Old Country.

Not to bring up bad memories

but they also signed Goran Suton. At least he’ll have plenty of English Russian speakers around to chat.

I thought we had all agreed to never speak his name again here.

Maybe I just made that agreement with myself. Whatever. What a lucky bastard he was that day.

I'm probably wrong here,

but I thought the European leagues had a rule that said only two Americans on each roster. If that’s the case, then our U of L guys might be fighting each other for the same spots. Hope I’m wrong. Life in Italy doesn’t sound half bad — and for sure the food is good.

I think it's different from league-to-league

Has to be, because they signed three American players this morning.

Edgar for 3??? Good!!!

This is big, Edgar took so much from the fans and everyone else when all he did was want to win!!! He never backed down from any player and thru it all he gave us 4 years of excitement. Thanks for that last freedom hall win Edgar.

You are confusing Edgar with Kyle…unless this is the real Charlie Strong, then you are right and I am sorry/please dont kill me

From my findings

Gaines played there in the ‘06-’07 season and currently with the Bakersfield Jam of the NBDL. Dean originally signed there after college (like Sosa) but only played half a season with them before being transferred to Russia. It seems that he is currently in Spain. And Angelico Biella did finish second to last last season.

Please do not compare me to that guy. That's embarrassing

And I’m just putting what I found. I’m not saying they’re a bad team historically, but last year that’s where they finished.

They both signed earlier this month

You win

I should have dug a little deeper. But it didn’t help that most of the sites were in Italian.

Ok. You win again

You can’t get any better proof than that. I guess that’s why you run this place and I don’t. I will never doubt you again

In a few years they can sign Cisco and maybe even O’bannon!
