Carolina Panthers fan here about Trent Guy

Alright, hook us up with the deal on this guy. Carolina got him as an undrafted free agent, and he survived the first wave of UDFA cuts when they signed their draft picks. What are his strengths and weaknesses? What do you think his chances are of making the team? They drafted 3 WRs this year, and currently have 11. I doubt they keep more than 6, maximum.

Bah, I have to make the 75 word minimum. That should do it.

Personally

I think the guy has NFL potential. He’s got the speed and athleticism, he returned several kickoffs for touchdowns and has game-changer ability. Tough too…he got shot in college and hardly missed a beat. The only downside for an NFL receiver would maybe be size IMO, but i definitely wouldn’t mind having him on special teams on my squad for kickoff return.

I can pretty much give you two words for why he wasn’t a star in college: Steve Kragthorpe. Louisville put a LOT of good players in the NFL over the last decade, but under he-who-shall-not-be-named everyone underachieved.

See, now that’s what I keep hearing is he has all this speed and athleticism, but I heard he ran a 4.53 and a 4.58 40 at his pro day. Ok, fine, he has NFL speed, but how elite can it be? Was he injured when he ran at the pro day? Does he just play faster than he runs when timed?

There is a youtube video of him making an incredible one handed catch in traffic. Was that common, or an anomaly?

stuff 'bout stuff.

I never claimed he was elite

just that he has to potential for a decent nfl career in the righ situation. I dont know his 40 time but he has an intangible ability to make plays happen. Hes clutch im telling you. Will he get enough touches in camp to show that? Who knows. Im just saying if I had an nfl team I would be glad they picked him up.

again the video was only uncommon because he was rarely given an opportunity to shine as receiver because we had very marginal quarterbacking and horrible coaching and playcalling.

Cool deal. Thanks for the info! It should be interesting to see what happens. I’m personally rooting for an in state kid to nab that last WR spot, Oliver Young, but if Trent Guy can make more plays then I’d be more than happy with him.

Could have told you this on the panthers blog

But Trent want to West Charlotte, he is so in state he played high school football a mile from BOA.

Game speed doesn’t always translate to good 40 times. I think that is the case here.

I think Guy’s best attribute is his return ability.

Agrees.

He’s fast, and I have to think that the 40 time was hampered somewhat, but I don’t think he’s 4.3 range. What he does have is incredible vision, which is what makes him so dangerous on returns. He would probably be a running back if not for height.

I think he does have elite acceleration though. He was often useful in the slot cause his release would dominate slot defenders.

Release is good. Beating the defender off the line is probably the most important part of a receiver’s game other than catching the ball.

he will never be a starting NFL wideout

he is waaaaaay too small. But with that said he is a tough mofo and quick as shit. He’d be a decent slot receiver due to his quickness and fearlessness to go over the middle, a la Wes Welker. The problem is that Welker is built a whole lot more sturdy.

One other thing that does bode well for Guy is the time he spent backing up Harry Douglas. Harry has incredible route running skills, which is imperative for a small receiver at the college, much less the NFL level Guy has physical traits that are very similar to Harry, and we all expected Guy to step right in and fill the same role Harry played for us, ocassional big play threat but also our most reliable underneath reciver. The problem was that due to Kraggers inept playcalling, everyone was forced to play out of their position and we never got to see Guy at what should have been his best. He definitely was our most precise route runner and showed consistently good hands, which would suggest that if given the opportunity he probably could be an above average playmaker.

With that said, Guy was still a stud return man and I think that’d be his meal ticket in the NFL. Given Carolina’s lack of a passing game and dead man walking coach, it probably wouldn’t hurt to have a hometown (you do realize he’s from Charlotte, right) speedster with game breaking ability on your side.

Naw, I didn't realize he was from North Carolina.

Either way, I’m from South Carolina, so that’s why I was rooting more for Oliver Young to get the last WR spot lol.

The hopeful for the slot position right now is Armanti Edwards, who was a 3rd round draft pick this year. I’ll break down the situation for you guys real quick.

Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards were both 3rd round picks this year. They’re virtual locks to make the team. Steve Smith, the multi-time Pro Bowler, is of course making the team. Wallace Wright was specifically signed this offseason to help the special teams coverage, so it’s likely he’ll make the team (70% chance). Dwayne Jarrett is a 4th year guy who was a 2nd round pick who has really underperformed. It’s a coin flip whether he gets another year or not. David Gettis is a sixth round pick from this year who has a lot of potential. I’d give him a 65% chance to make the team.

The rest (Kenneth Moore, Dexter Jackson, Charly Martin, Trent Guy, Oliver Young) likely only have a shot at making the team if they finally give up on Dwayne Jarrett and they decide to keep a 6th receiver. However, being a 6th round pick, Gettis doesn’t have that much more going for him in draft position than a UDFA like Guy. So, Gettis could be unseated as that 5th or 6th guy if someone like Trent Guy has a great training camp and preseason.

I think whoever the last WR in the depth chart is, they’ll have to contribute to special teams coverage. I don’t know whether they give Guy a shot at return man. They signed Brian Witherspoon specifically for kick returns this offseason, and while he doesn’t have great stats, he has killer speed. Armanti Edwards is the guy they want for punt returns.

Well, either way, I like what I’ve heard. I’ll direct any Carolina fans to this page who wish to know more about him. Thanks folks.

When is Steve Smith expected back...

from his second broken arm? The Panthers might be keeping more than 6 WRs this year, don’t ya think?

by SullyCard on Jun 28, 2010 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, well, that is a possibility. One of the 5 or 6 expected to make the team, Wallace Wright, is really only on the team for special teams coverage. I don’t know how good of a WR he is. Unless Wright makes the coaches think he can play receiver effectively as well, they may keep another one. Smith is expected to play in the first game, but with two broken arms in quick succession, there may be enough of a question regarding his durability to warrant stocking up on another receiver.

There’s only so many roster spots though, and they typically spend an extra one on a kickoff specialist, since their placekicker doesn’t really have the leg for it anymore. I expect them to possibly keep one more offensive lineman than they normally would as well, since that was a position hit with injuries last year. A lot of people are expecting them to carry 3 QBs too, since they drafted 2 this year.

stuff 'bout stuff.
