I come home tonight after a few beers and notice Mr Calipari is now recruiting Elisha Justice, seemingly because every one of his players have decided to go elsewhere rather than take in another year of his superb basketball instruction. As a player from Eastern Kentucky, an area I am sure hates Louisville with a passion, I am sure Justice is going to listen, especially since there has been talk of a scholarship. If Louisville can keep Justice, it will be huge. I see this a Pre-Teague battle, and I am of the opinion right now that landing Marquis Teague will be nothing short of a victory over Kentucky in January,
I love Rick Pitino. I am happy he will be the coach at Louisville for years to come, but Coach needs to embrace the rivalry. He claimed he has recruited harder than he ever has in his career and by following his trips all over the country, I believe him. He claims it is to compete within the Big East, which I am sure is true, but there is no doubt competing with Kentucky is at the forefront of every eighteen hour day Pitino endures to land the next great class. Its only a game and a rivals ranking, but the symbolism of it has consequences that out-weigh any victory in the Big East. In order to be relevant, Pitino must compete with Kentucky and win. Not only on the basketball court, but in the living rooms of the best high school kids across the country.
So just say it Rick. Tell everyone the reason you are busting your ass is that in order to be considered the best, you have to beat the evil empire in Lexington. Tell everyone that yes, this game and the recruiting that goes on between these two schools is a big deal. That yes, you will be competing for many of the same players and you expect to land a number of them. And please, tell Cal to wipe his feet and wash his hands before entering Pitino's Palace next winter.
