The Kuric Classic?
The FanPost by yawnz inspired me to create a new tradition hopefully starting next year. Now I need your help to decide what direction it should go... no pun intended. To honor Freedom Hall and the game that will forever be etched in Cardinal legend history, I propose a new run/walk/bike event, The Kuric Classic.
My proposed route is approximately 6.3 miles, starting at Freedom Hall and ending at the new downtown arena. You can view the route I created here. As you can see, the route will go around Freedom Hall on the Circle of Champions, down Central Ave past Papa John's Cardinal Stadium (nice Central bridge 'hill') viewing Churchill Downs, and take a right on 3rd, going past Jim Patterson baseball stadium, the University of Louisville Belknap campus, the Granville Inn, etc... all the way down to Main St to end up at the entrance of the new arena.
While the 3rd street bike lane could help make this a non-official event without traffic control barricades, should we make this official? Should we ask Kyle if he wants to make this an entry-fee event with proceeds going to a charity of his choice? This is all just speculation and inspiration so far, but I'm all for making this idea a reality and a new Cardinal tradition. Of course, due to weather and timing, I believe this should be done on the weekend of March 6th to commemorate the final game played at Freedom Hall instead of the beginning of the basketball season in December.
Let me know your thoughts in the poll below and use the comments to answer the following questions:
1. Should this be an official event or something we just get together and do for free, worrying about our own transportation back to the starting point?
2. Do you like a different name for this event?
3. Do you think it should be at another date? If the weekend of March 6th, it would always be on a Saturday or Sunday, depending on if a basketball game was taking place or not.
4. Should it be one-way or round trip? I like one-way... signifies that we're not going back to Freedom Hall, but that brings up a transportation issue to work out.
5. Do you have a different route or modification to suggest?

I like this...
… but one thing you’d have to keep in mind is the Louisville Triple Crown of Running (three runs: 5K, 10K and a 10 Miler). The 5K was March 6 this year and it usually starts around the first of March.
Just something to file away for thought.
http://www.swagssportshoes.com/runningracecalendar.htm
that site has most races, but not all of them.
personally, i love the idea. i’d check with the UofL alumni office. They host the “run for the L of it” 5k downtown every May, but it’s not a particularly noteworthy event. something like this might spice it up.
I work closely with the Alumni office
I’m part of the Speed Alumni Council… definitely would check with them, Kyle Kuric, and the AD if I need to, and possibly KFEC.
I’m pretty sure Kuric cannot put his name on any events, even for charity, until he is no longer playing college basketball. There are even restrictions on what events they can attend if I’m not mistaken, which i quite possibly am. I’m not a lawyer or NCAA compliance official, so i dont really understand all that stuff.
good point, let's call it the KKK until he graduates
actually, on second thought, let’s call it something else.
What about the nickname given to him here?
I mean, this idea was thought up by a CC’er, why not use the nickname all of the Card Chronicle people (had Nation typed out, but quickly deleted that) voted on? It will have special meaning to us and sure, we’d have to explain it to people, but it would help add some lore to the walk/run.
why not $14?
or, if you go with $22, you could have everyones bib # start with 14 (so bib 1 would actually be like 14001).
I like $14.
Or some other number that has to do with March 6, 2010… or Cardinal Basketball or Kyle.
We’d have to do shirts, plus administrative fees. I’m sure the government will ask for a chunk of money, especially if we block off streets and require police.
And since we’d be donating to charity, there’d have to be a good chunk of money leftover.
do you think
the city would mind if I started putting exclamation marks on every Preston Street sign I could find? Maybe we should just petition to have the name officially changed?
awesome idea!
i ran XC in track all through high school and college. i vowed never to do it again with all the pain and running that you have to go through. But…if Kuric calls I must answer, i would run this race!

would it be a horrible idea...
to consider doing it before and after the last game of the year? That’s a lot of walking, and maybe something we wouldn’t be in the mood to do depending on the result of the game. But it would mean getting back to parked cars and would lighten the inevitable gameday traffic jam downtown.
nevermind
I just imagined walking five miles after a basketball game and I totally wouldn’t do it. But I still think it should take place before the last game of the year. With enough time to stop somewhere downtown and get some grub before tipoff, of course.
I don’t see the beat the traffic crowd walking 5 miles back to their cars! Let alone waiting until the end of the game for a coordinated event involving said 5 mile walk.
They gone have to stop sleeping on me one day.. I gotta be one of the best

I think that depends on if it is a win or a loss. If it is a loss, I’m probably going to be so p*ssed that I’ll need to take some form of aggression out on something. Walking is the least destructive thing that I could be doing.

with the entry fee
could we maybe get red “Live Strong”-type bracelets, replacing “Live” with “Charlie”?
