Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

that's the way the season crumbles

Were you shocked? I sure wasn't. I was hopeful all weekend, keeping the positive fan spirit in high gear. So much so that in retrospect it seems forced. It is not odd for me to expect the best out of the Cardinals, and this year it was not odd for them to disappoint.

The saving grace of this season comes in two distinct pieces of knowledge:

1) We closed down the Hall with an absolute bang. I'll never forget that game as long as I live. And frankly, barring a highly unlikely final four drive, I'd rather have won that game then a couple in the tourney.

2) This was undeniably a rebuilding year, and we still played OK, making the NCAAs when many other powerhouses did not. That leaves me excited about next season when Siva gets the reins, Sammy,  Jennings and Swop are more refined and Buckles, Marra and Kuric will see a lot more floor time. I'll be amazed if we aren't contending for the Big East title again.

Alas, we have to wait 7 months for that to happen.

But I, for one, stand completely behind Pitino and the coaching staff. Without him the outlook isn't so sunny when we open the new arena.

I hate that we lost, and I hate that I have to hang up my lucky shirt for one more off season. But it'll be worth it next year when we win 26 games, get seeded in the top part of the brackets and a deep run doesn't seem so improbable.

Go Cards!

Can't share your sunny outlook

I predict next year to be about the same, maybe a little worse.

Next Year

will probably be a toss up. I think we might have had a secret weapon sitting on our bench all year, Chris Smith.. Here is his ESPN profile. Those are pretty damn good numbers compared with any player on our team this year, of course, he did rack those up while playing in the MAAC. Then again, apparently he scored 17 on Siena while grabbing 9 rebounds, that same Siena team that Louisville narrowly beat in the tourney last year as the Overall #1 seed. Looking forward to seeing what he can do!

I can understand people's concerns

it’s natural to look at this team and forecast another sketchy season, but I think if we drill down a little we find a good core for next year.
What are we losing? Sosa, Delk and Smith.
OK, I know we hate to see these guys go, but if we really break it down, Sosa has been a spotty guy. He’s been great and awful. Usually in the same game. We’re going to miss Jerry’s attitude, and reggie’s threes. But really, Jerry struggled mightily on offense this year, but it never stopped him from trying to get the 3 going, which I understand is what Pitino wants. But having a guy out there shooting that percentage of threes it hurts. Takes looks away from other guys who could use the strokes to get hot. Same could be said for Sosa who is, often a shoot first guy. Delk, well, he was good, but there are better offensive players on the bench. Again, I love these guys, they gave me a lot of great memories but we are not going to suffer a cockpunching when they leave
Who are we keeping? Everyone else plus smith, plus a 4 star. Samardo is still maturing and I am very confident that he will have a big year. Ditto for jennings. I am high as hell on Siva. I think his upside is insane and I think if he gets 30 minutes on the floor a game we’re going to see some special stuff.
Swop looked so much better late in the season than he did early on. Same for Buckles, Kuric and Marra.
To me this year was the definition of a transition, Coach gave a lot of guys on the bench PT, spreading the minutes around judiciously to ensure that everyone will be battle tested by the end of the year. We have to believe that he was not thinking so much about this season as he was about next year.
I’m not saying he gave up on success, but he was definitely keeping his eyes toward the future. I have nothing but faith in the man to guide this ship.
We are going to be both young and experienced next year, that is a dangerous combination for our competition.
I could be wrong, maybe we suck next year. But I’ll be amazed if we don’t end up with a double bye in the BET next year. I don’t expect people to get on board with my optimism, but I can promise the next 7 months will be better for those who do.

Good points!

I could see older, wiser Kyle Kuric or Mike Marra becoming the kind of player that lead the team to having a huge season.

First things first

We need a drama-free summer. No one getting arrested, no issues with the coach. If we keep the distractions away, I see a huge upside to this team for next year.

Now that we can look forward to football again

That should take some attention off the basketball team for a while.
