It's Finally Here! NCAA Tournament Opening Games Open Thread
It's like Christmas for middle-aged guys. The first day of the NCAA tournament. Thanks to our friends at CBS, you can watch all the action live on your desktop at work. You can also watch on TV, but that's so 2004.
Half of the CardChron staff is in Las Vegas, so make sure you follow Mike and hothot on twitter so you can live vicariously through them.
The rest of us will be here holding down the fort, commenting on games and counting down the unbearable number of hours until 9:55 PM tomorrow night.
Until then, enjoy the games!
UPDATE 3:04 PM:
I think this picture sums up the early games:

Guessing Mike is more of a Southwest guy though. Either way, he deserves to be heckled for flying during the first day of games. Who does that?

Quick question
Does anyone think the Big East is hurt overall by the fact that our style of play is so much different than anyone else? We seem to be more physical, which in games that are called tighter (some NCAA games) hurts us. I know the Big East had a good showing last year, but considering how dominant the conference was, we could’ve done better….. kind of rambling, just wanted to know what everyone’s thoughts were.
by Chris Redman is my hero on Mar 18, 2010 1:05 PM EDT reply actions
Possibly...
…depends on how close the refs call the games. Good Big East teams getting their big guys in foul trouble in the tourney has been a problem. But there are so many styles in the Big East, it seems to help that you play against every type during the regular season.
I think it hurts sometimes.
Like in 2007 when we lost to A&M, and had to use Farley for like 15 minutes with Padgett and Caracter on the bench in foul trouble.
But last year didn’t seem to make a difference.
Yes
This always hurts one or two Big East teams in the tournament when the refs call it tight. Though this year most Big East teams have experienced/expected bad offiiciating in conference so it shouldn’t be a surprise. Coaches research refs and know who calls it tighter, I’m assuming.

From hothot

Sadly, Big East matchups will be trumped by Mtn West Conf games on TV all wknd; BYU-Florida on CBS. Huge mormon populus/history in Vegas.
When did Capital One choose Roy Williams for its commercial during this year's tourney?
That might have turned out better for them.
Hothot with a "glass half full" tweet:

Stomach hurts; sportsbook deli reuben at 3am = bad idea. Slight comfort that I bet 4x stronger on Notre Dame than ’Nova w/ my homer picks.
spread it looks like...
“…of course this coming from someone who actually took Nova and gave the points today (+17). SMH”
Old Dominion pulling even with ND
I thought this game was a lock for the Irish. ODU just took the lead 31-30 on a 5-minute ND scoring drought.
Awesome
ULismyhothot: RT @VegasRunner: All books I spoke w/ need Old Dom to cover big time..ND is tied into so many parlays w/ later games; could wipe them out
Good grief, Notre Dame was playing well but now they can't make a shot.
What a strange turnaround. Perhaps they were better with Harangody on the bench and a tinge of desperation in their bellies.
theoldman
Still time.
Only down 3 with the ball at 25 seconds.
But still…. yikes Big East teams not starting the tourney off well.
I'm just watching the live scoreboard on CBS
And I’m getting amped. can’t imagine what it’s like to watch games.

damn.
I missed the end of the ND game. Figured it was still at TO so I had it on BYU-Fla. I suck at life.
First game and my bracket has already crashed and burned.
I should just put team names on a wall and throw darts.

Actually...
…looks like I picked Old Dominion.
This marks the only point in the next 3 weeks that I will be leading any bracket pool.

Disastrous Big East Day
Wow, really glad I wasn’t bragging up the BE heading into the tourney. Talk about wearing egg on the face. This is truly embarrassing.
Seriously...
How is nobody showing the Florida game? WTF, CBS?
You’re right, I’d rather watch the first inconsequential minutes of another game where the announcers would rather talk about UK.
If Nova goes down, all my brackets are shot
I had them in the Final Four in every bracket I did (Yahoo, CBS, and ESPN).
On the bright side, they are the team I had beating us, so…
Bright Side (maybe)
Maybe our guys will see this and realize you gotta bring your best game right from the start or you go home. Lord knows our guys need all the mental motivation they can get every single game.
Honestly...
If Nova goes down, with ND having already lost, if we can’t get past Cal, I see Duke in the Final Four. Very little real opposition at that point.
Big East
I think once the tourney starts, the conference allegiance or needing other teams in our conference to look good is overrated. I mean, we’re in, they aren’t changing our seeding, and Nova playing bad against a 15 seed doesn’t have anything to do with how good we are.
True, but if you’ve been running your mouth about how superior the Big East conference is to ACC or SEC fans…

3G was not watchable for me.
I would get maybe 30 seconds, then a buffer and then knocked back to audio only.
At home, I could watch one on the TV, one online and on the phone using my insight digital. Home office is the way to go in March!
Edge = Fail
Im in DC and my Edge iphone is failing me. After about 10 seconds of video all I’m getting is audio. Oh well, that was a waste of 9.99.

UK vs. ETSU tonight
I can’t help but be reminded of UK vs. MTSU a few years ago. OK, more than a few.
Of course there was – ahem – a little extra pressure on them in that game, in the form of a very big (and scary) game to look forward to in the next round.

But i have been to vegas 5 times and they have perputually gotten drunker and drunker and more fucked up each time I have went. Its like I drank a beer the first time and the last time I was there I was doing bumps off a hookers tits. On the offensive end.
Looks like the Caracter of old to me. Impressive physically and with the ball. Doesn’t care too much about the other stuff.
Still like him and am cheering for UTEP because of him though.
Just read the original post...
…question: CC has a staff? Damn, I just thought is was Mike and his PC. What a downer…LOL.
DC
Always a soft spot for him, wish it would have worked out, hope things work out for him.
Imagine if he reached half his potential on the 2008 team. Could he have made a difference in the UNC game? Probably.
And what about last year? Remember Samardo didn’t score against MSU…
DC’s situation is in the top 5 “what if’s?” along with Allan Houston, Jason Osbourne, Jarome Harmon and if Pervis didn’t hurt his knee against OSU…
Agreed.
I’d add what if we had Telfair on the 2005 team.
Wouldn't that be the same as Siva?
Telfair turned out to be kind of a head case….

by Chris Redman is my hero on Mar 18, 2010 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Telfair would have been one
and done under current rules so no loss there. Siva is a true point guard. He has the instincts that are uncanny. Rest of team isn’t quite ready for his style (sometimes don’t seem ready for his passes), but will get there by next season.
Maddie in Portland, Oregon
by kentuckybred on Mar 18, 2010 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't know.
Telfair was very talented, and that team lacked a true point guard and depth. He would have hurt us because he didn’t have an outside shot, and we had 4 threats from deep in the starting line up, but there were definitely some games, including the Illinois game, where we needed some stead ball handling and the ability to penetrate from the guard position.
He wasn’t a savior, but considering when he would have joined the team, he might have made enough of a difference to get us to the final game and threaten UNC.
Well I haven't lost a Sweet 16 team in my bracket yet
But had Richmond, ND and Vandy…and BUtler
by Chris Redman is my hero on Mar 18, 2010 5:42 PM EDT reply actions
UTEP has a couple players
I like Culpepper. I can’t root for them though. I don’t know why, but besides the year they dropped 389 3s on us, I’ve always like Butler.
My brackets
are totally shot to hell. That’s ok. Now I can erase one added worry from my list and just enjoy the games. Silver lining, boys…. silver lining.
Come on, Miners!
I picked ’em for the Sweet 16….
I love Culpepper….
and I second 922 on the soft spot for DC…
PLUS I’ve always hated Butler, ever since they knocked out Reece Gaines and the Cards back in ’03.
So quit f***ing around, UTEP — get out and guard those three-point shooters!
I'm gonna play close
attention to the SDSU-TENN game late tonight. SDSU is a good team in their own right, but I’m watching to see if TENN looks sluggish or otherwise out of kilter playing so late. That’s the thing that worries me most about our game tomorrow night. I really really wish it was not the late game. Bad vibes about that.
