Cal starter Omondi Amoke suspended for Louisville game

Starting forward Omondi Amoke has been suspended indefinitely by California head coach Mike Montgomery due to an undisclosed violation of team rules.

The 6-7 sophomore averages 4.8 points and 4.6 rebounds, and moved into a full-time starting role six games ago. He scored 11 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a November loss to Ohio State.

No word yet on who will replace Amoke in the starting lineup, but the most likely candidates are 7-2 sophomore Max Zhang, who leads the team in blocked shots, or 6-7 junior Markhuri Sanders-Frison, who has been bothered by a bad back for the past month. Montgomery could also choose to go small and insert guard Jorge Gutierrez, the team's best on-ball defender, into the starting five and slide 6-6 Theo Robertson over to the four position.

Please, please, please let Grown-Up Samardo make the trip to Jacksonville.

7-2?

Holy Jeez that is scary. Good thing he sucks. I was confident we were going to beat Cal and then show Duke how even a middle of the road team in the Big East can dominate the ACC champ. Now I’m sure of it. Go Cards!

Nice

yeah that zhang dude doesn’t play all that much. Still, Mike is right, even a 7’2" grandmother would scare SS.

Cal fan here....

This is disasterous for us as MSF and Zhang tend to foul a lot and you guys draw a lot of fouls.

BUT, Amoke has zero offensive game and has really played sub-par throughout the year despite becoming a starter. Some of us are hopeful that Zhang has simply needed a chance to step up and has shown flashes of being a pretty good inside presence. Not dominan or great of course. Just pretty good.

Less awesome if....

Zhang starts up a “Return to Sender” business in the lane on Friday. Something he is very capable of doing.

If Samardo can get the hook shot to fall...

this would be a great time for Coach P to show that he’s really good at game-planning for the NCAA tourney.
