It's time for Ricky P to go.......
How many times do we have to get embarrassed on national TV, blow a lead or look like a high school team before we start pointing fingers at the man thats suppose to be running the show? There is no way in hell Cincinnati should have beatin us last night. Our players looked like they had been the team that played the night before and this team has no heart or will to win. All this reflects on the coach and his lack of coaching, lack of caring and lack of talent our program!!

yeah, this position is ridiculous and absurd
this year was a transition year for the program. But despite being a transition year, we are going to make the NCAA tournament and we beat a top 5 team twice. I 100% believe we will be better next year b/c of the development these players have shown.
Whoever you are, you’re fan positing privileges should be suspended for a while till you chill out
Who always takes the blame for a team loses? The coach! And since when has just making the tournament (barely) been enough for elite programs? It’s obvious that all his off the court issues has gotten to him. I been a fan way too long and have paid thousands of dollars to see them in regular season, tournament and final four. The fans deserve a better effort from the players and coaches. You wanna talk about how the players dont rebound and how coach p isnt on the court, well, who do you think recruited these players that don’t know how to block out?

How about an elite program not making the NCAA at all?
Like, say, UNC? UConn?
Dude, shit happens. This year’s team doesn’t have the spark that last year’s team did, nor do they have the personnel. UConn and UNC are filled with four and five star prospects and they’re not even bubble teams; they laid big goose eggs all over the place all season. This team is filled with a bunch of two and three stars (Samuels, Siva, and Jennings notwithstanding) and we’re probably still a lock.
Man i dont pay to see uconn or unc!! I could care less about them. Matter fact, if you have been watchin espn or any internet blogs, there has been rumors about Calhoun retiring because of the season he has had and heard talks of Roy Williams being on the hot seat as well. Elite programs are expected to maintain winning, thats why they are called elite programs!! I just dont want our basketball program to hit rock bottom like our football team did with fag-thorpe before we do something about it!!
by louisvillefan#21 on Mar 11, 2010 12:45 PM EST up reply actions
smh
If you don’t care about UCONN then don’t bring up Calhoun and Roy Williams and compare Louisville to other elite programs. NCAA basketball has changed a lot since the 70s and 80s, bro. No team can stay elite forever.
Louisville finished 11-7 in the Big East this year. That’s not exactly rock bottom.

What do u call getting beat by western carolina at home? St Johns is rock bottom and they made us look like a high school team! Our players play scared because everytime some one makes one mistake, no matter good of a game they play, he takes them out. It just seems like pitino has lost focus. Finally...the reason for this post.
Because Pitino is immoral he shouldn’t still have a job as a basketball coach.
Not sure what else he can do to prove himself to fans like yourself. Even if Pitino won the National Championship last year, you’d still be calling for his head because the Cards lost to Western Carolina this season.

Not just immoral, but also a huge lack of leadership. Not trying to get political, but Bill Clinton almost lost the Presidency because of a moral failure.

Seriously?
He was impeached. I’m not talking about popularity. Popularity means you don’t get re-elected. Impeached and being convicted means you are no longer the President. Which is what losing the Presidency means. You can’t get much closer to that than being impeached.
You are obviously the one who needs to read a bit more. Also calling me a right winger is beyond laughable.
They gone have to stop sleeping on me one day.. I gotta be one of the best

Impeached?
No. Articles of impeachment were filed; but Congress as a whole refused to act and the impeachment articles were dropped.
Andrew Johnson was impeached. The term applies when you are forced, by impeachment, out of office and is as misused in the media these days as is the term “nuclear option.” That didn’t happen to Clinton. And what I meant to say was that right wingers were the only ones who made a deal about the blow job. It certainly didn’t affect his poll numbers.
theoldman
Ok, are you sure you know what you are talking about?
Last time I checked Johnson wasn’t forced out of office and was acquitted.
Also you said
except with right wingers such as you.
Get a clue. You are the only one misusing anything. I’m not taking about who made a big deal about anything, i’m talking about Bill Clinton almost losing his job.
They gone have to stop sleeping on me one day.. I gotta be one of the best

You are right on the technicalities of impeachment
but to be technical, it wasn’t for a “moral failure.” Everyone voting against him made it very clear that it was his perjury and obstruction of justice charges that led to his impeachment, and his “moral failure” wouldn’t have lived up to “high crimes and misdemeanors” warranting impeachment in the first place.
In any event, this isn’t the thread for this discussion, and we should focus on Pitino.
It’s not technicalities it’s the definition. Impeachment which led to acquittal. If someone is going to call me a right winger and tell me I can’t read and don’t know what i am talking about, they better have a clue as to what they are talking about.
Perjury and obstruction which stemmed from….
Also I wasn’t even referring to the sexual stuff, oldman did that. Perjury is a moral failure as well.
Also i was focused on Pitino, oldman decided he had an axe to grind against the right and thought he found a target.
I’m done.
For the record I haven’t said Pitino should be fired for this season and I would appreciate not being lumped into that category. (not directed at you 83fan)

It looks to me like you raised Clinton's name
and claimed it was due to a “moral failure.” For you to now claim that you were referring to perjury and not Clinton’s affair is quite obviously disingenuous. If it was perjury to which you were referring, then it is a terrible comparison because Pitino’s "sins" aren’t anything like perjury.
I was wrong.
Shouldn’t have labeled anyone a winger; this is not the place for that and I was out of bounds. Actually I have an excuse — for some reason the computer lost my first post and when I re-wrote it, I produced that brain fart. Sorry to anyone I offended.

I was referring to the impeachment which involved perjury stemming from his indiscretions. I specificaly stated i was trying to avoid politics.
The facts are Clinton was impeached for his behavior which almost led to him losing his job.
Oldman brought up the sex acts and called me a right winger.
Also enough with the sins talk i’ve never once claimed any religious authority.

My bad on the Johnson thing.
The point is Clinton was never close to losing his job. The Republicans didn’t have the votes; all they wanted to do was play politics by using Ken Starr to bash Clinton and the Dems for news cycle after news cycle.
And to some degree it worked. The dozens of Republican Congressional sex scandals in the years since get very little of the outrageous coverage that was manifest over the Monica nonsense.

I'll take
A final four and two elite 8s in 5 years over whatever you think another coach might offer us. I’ll also take Sam Sam, Justin Coleman, Wayne Blackshear, and Michael Chandler over whoever else you think another coach could recruit.

(+1)...and a big east reg season AND tournament championship
during a season in which the BE was arguably the best conference IN HISTORY, with the school’s first EVER #1 ranking in history in that same 5 yr span.
i think we’re doing ok.
You need to rethink your position.
This year has been frustrating, but you must have some unbelievably high standards. Last year we were one of 4 #1 seeds. Each of those teams lost similar amounts of talent to graduation/NBA. Of those teams, Pitt is about a 4 seed, and UConn and UNC are going to the NIT (and for UNC, that’s probably a gift). Pitino doesn’t deserve a lot of praise for this season, but it is far, far, far from a season warranting his dismissal.
Plus, who would you hire in his place? My first choice is Jay Wright, but he might not leave for UofL (and certainly wouldn’t leave for a team where making the tournament was a terminable offense). But he’s underachieved this season, a bit. The other coach mentioned often is Donovan. How’s 3 straight NITs for you? Any coach you can name as a potential replacement has had a similar season to this one for us. And no one you can name has the same recruiting class lined up for 2011 as Pitino.
Rick has some faults, but
let’s exercise a little more discretion before calling for his head.
Next Year
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we went to the NIT. As much hell as Edgar gets, losing him is not a good thing. Samardo, TJ, and others will have to improve a great deal. Just as long as those 2011 players follow through and sign their LOI’s, I can be content with that. Bottom line: we are lucky to have Pitino as coach. He is one of the top ten names in college basketball and he coaches our team.
83 fan....
83 fan, ur right. Thats why it took me so long to say anything about firing ricky p cause i cant think of a coach anywhere that can replace him but something has gotta give. Last year there wasnt no reason why we didnt win it all and this year has been down right embarrassing. Come on now, gettin beat by Western Carolina on any court is horrible but they beat us at home. They got beat by Elon and i dont even know who or what Elon is!! A blow out loss to St Johns on national tv? Come on now! Marquette on national tv was a disgrace. The same Marquette team that got beat by Notre Dame at home. And yeah our 2011 recruiting class is off the hook but so was our 2010 class two years ago and there isnt a single guy left from that class, they all went elsewhere!!
by louisvillefan#21 on Mar 11, 2010 12:32 PM EST reply actions
There wasn't a reason why we didn't win it all?
Do you remember the end of last year? We went on a HUGE run to steal the Overall #1 seed, and played out of our minds the last month (does Rick not get credit for this? or have you conveniently forgotten?) Also, there was NO way we were beating the stacked team UNC had last year. Plus we lost to the eventual National Runner-Up, and a hall of fame coach in Izzo. Western Carolina was a bad loss, but they’re in the top 150 RPI at least. A lot of teams have bad losses like that. Also, Elon is in North Carolina, and I believe their mascot is the Phoenix. Stop cherry picking examples by the way. You slam us for Marquette because they got beat by ND at home, but we beat ND, so what of that?

Again, identify someone who lives up to your expectations.
Yes, all of those games are bad and embarrasing, but you can’t just say that they require Pitino to step down unless you put them in context. Every coach in the country has had a season like ours, and most have had much worse. Not every coach has had a team for which “there wasn’t no reason why we didn’t win it all,” but every coach who has had a title contender has had one of those teams crap out during the NCAA. In short, until you can identify a reasonable standard or expectation that Pitino is failing to meet, you are just griping. I get it, and last night and this season have been frustrating, but you are going too far.
I'm geniunely curious...
Davidson07, I know you’re out there somewhere, what are you thinking? I’m curious if you’re still in the anti-RP camp this much, or if your stance has changed a little? Wouldn’t mind if you weighed in.

thanks for asking
first, let me say that i’m not the OP. seriously. (person below who noted that grammar is bad and therefore not me…thanks!) in fact, i had no idea this thread even existed until about 30 seconds ago, when i was browsing hot hot’s twitter.
second, my stance has changed somewhat. i’m still not a huge fan of pitino’s at the moment, but i’m mollified by the following:
1) rick literally made all the right moves in the second syracuse game. i tweeted it but i should’ve posted here to demonstrate my willingness to eat crow
2) i’ve generally realized that when rick’s teams lose, they lose ugly. think back even to the CUSA years, like when memphis spanked us on our home court in the FF year. The “ugliness” of the losses enhances the virulence of the reaction (see above).
3) on a bigger picture, the person above who said that this is a transition year – yet we’re still going to the NCAA – is right. This is truer when you look at programs like UNC and what transition years have done for them (on the other hand…UNC has two titles in the last five years, while the footage from our two titles is starting to look pretty dated)
Now there are still a number of things about pitino that drive me crazy (late season line-up changes, inexplicable substitution patterns, etc.). I also think he should’ve been fired after the revelations of last summer. I’m sorry, but high-profile public figures can’t have sex with strangers in restaurants and then give them money for abortions/health insurance and keep their jobs.
So bottom line is that rick is a good coach, but it’s becoming harder to deny that he’s massively underachieved while at Louisville (for instance, i don’t think ANY of us expected to be on the bubble in year #9). When taken in the context of my moral objections to him being our coach, i find it easy to root for the idea of taking a shot on a young up-and-comer, a la Denny Crum (an admittedly risky strategy). As I mentioned above, “ugly” losses (St. John’s, Charlotte, etc.) tend to make these feelings boil over.
valid points, understand your POV
I think he deserved a 2nd chance. I would rather keep him until he retires/leaves in 5 years than roll the dice on a up-and-comer.
by UL is my hot hot sex on Mar 12, 2010 8:12 PM EST up reply actions
I’m not a Pitino fan, however I don’t think he is a bad coach. I think he is good at putting himself and his teams in position to have success but his “coaching” is a bit overrated at times. The amount of success he has had winning is enough for some and I for one don’t think it’s time for him to go, outside anymore moral transgressions, which i believe is a very important factor when you’re responsible for children and young adults.
That said the MSU game showed Rick’s shortcomings as a coach and the UNC game shows what we will need if we want to see the championship game. The MSU game showed that most times we will be outcoached in big games and the UNC game showed that if we want to make it all the way we will need extreme talent. Fortunately I think Rick is building up some great classes that will have us in the final 4 in 2 or 3 years and the championship game in less than 5 (if Rick stays and we can get Teague).

Hmmm..
Are some people thinking Louisville and Rick Pitino should be a #1 seed EVERY YEAR? I know this season has been a bummer. I haven’t flown my Louisville flag to rub my WV grad neighbor’s nose in it since we lost to Michigan State last March. (Forget about it during the past football season!). But essentially calling for an undoubtedly Hall of Fame coach to be removed (and how else can one characterize the original post?) is just not thinking clearly.
We’ll be back… and the same people calling for Pitino’s head now, will be leading the campfire cheer this time next season.

We could get a real coach like tom izzo who takes less talent to the elite 8 every year and also eliminated our great coach wit our 2 lottery picks last year. Our players have no heart and thats a reflection of coaching and all the teams on our schedule see that immediatly! It would be great if our 2011 class comes together. But honestly, pitino is gonna have to do some soul searching and get to cleaning house to make room for all them incoming players.

now, earl clark was a lottery pick, yes but he hasnt left the bench all season. He should have kept his ass here, pitino should have kept caracter and kept his dick in his pants instead of embarrassing our program then we would be aight right now!

why play the what if game?
the fact of the matter is that we did beat syracuse twice..why discount those wins? that’s about the most impressive sweep of an opponent you can have. Does Pitino not get some credit for that?
Look around..lots of elite teams can struggle every once in awhile. UNC and UCONN won’t even make the big dance. I will agree that Pitino’s in game coaching is not as good as some other coaches, but he is lock to get into the hall of fame. Why would you want to push him out now? We have some top recruits coming in. Do you think they will come here if Pitino leaves? I don’t.
hell naw
they dont come if he leaves but he had the top recruiting class for 2010 two yrs ago, he’s still here and none of them are committed anymore. next yrs class is garbage, how do u open our brand new 230 million dollar arena with an NIT team?

next year’s class isn’t the best class ever, but i’d hardly call it garbage with Justin Coleman and Gorgui Dieng (hasn’t committed yet, but he will soon by most accounts). I definitely think we will be better next year. I love Edgar and Jerry, but let’s be honest. Inconsistency is their game.
Do you think this new arena would have happened without Pitino selling the program the last 9 years?
nope, so why open it wit a NIT team and u cant speak on recruits that havent committed yet. pitino should wanna get it rockin so we can name the court after him but he’s too busy doin his own dirt

i don’t know a lot about them, to be honest. but you know, i didn’t know a lot about preston knowles, andre mcgee, t-will, and many other recruits before they got here. and they all turned into more than solid players.
yeah, but it seems like he has lost the ability to bring the best out of his players. plus swop needs to move to the 3 cause he just cant bang wit big east power forwards who outweigh him by 30 and 40lbs. he’s long and can shoot when he is left open can could rebound over other small forwards. preston has the heart of a lion if pitino would just turn him loose let him play
by louisvillefan#21 on Mar 11, 2010 3:09 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t think he plays swop at the 4 because he thinks it looks cool. That is one position where we don’t have a lot of quality right now, so his hand is kind of forced. Swop would be much better if he could actually grab some rebounds. But he usually just hits them out of bounds or loses them on the way down. I’m sure that’s Pitino’s fault though. He probably gives him butterfingers before the game.
Preston always has the green light from Pitino. He went 1 for 12 last night. How much looser can you be?
he had to, he had no choice or a backup at the 2 position and i know swop dont wanna play the 4 and that we are short at that postion but he shoulda recruited a real power forward this season u think, better yet never recruit a man period that cant grab a rebound or is 6’7 200lbs soak n wet. My point exactly!!!!!!
by louisvillefan#21 on Mar 11, 2010 3:21 PM EST up reply actions
not all recruits work out. no coach does everythign perfectly. you sure do bitch a lot. the fact of the matter is that we have a great coach he can recruit well and gameplan well. we have a group of inconsistent players who have made this team difficult to watch. but we did lose a load of talent from last year’s squad and will still make the tournament, which is more than a few other elite programs can say.
perhaps you should go root for the team 70 miles down the road. they love fairweather fans over there!! you’d be welcomed with open arms i’m sure.

Playing the “if” game goes both ways. What if we lost twice to Syracuse, but won the games we had almost locked up against Pitt and WVU on the road? What if Preston and Siva don’t get injured, and Jerry plays last night (replacing Preston’s 1-12 performance with just a single made basket)? We’d be in the same spot, basically.

A couple things I think
I chose to respond to you because you posted a review. Our BE record finished 11-8, which isn’t embarrassing, but isn’t anything great. Just because most of us don’t care about the Sypher stuff, doesn’t mean that every UofL fan thinks it’s ok. I think it’s been a minor deal that has affected Pitino this season.
There should be frustration about this season and the coaching job Pitino has done though. We’ve tanked 4 second halves to differing degrees of horrible the last month in, St John’s, Georgetown, Marquette, and last night. Some of that is on the players, but some of it has to be on the coaching staff. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rick wasn’t here in 3 years.
those are valid arguments
we can talk about why we’ve tanked so much, and really I’m not sure why, but that’s a better argument than just “fire pitino!”

The coaches should get blamed for some of the results this year.

The fact you want a coach fired one year after losing 2 NBA lottery picks and being a overall #1 seed , even though we are still goin to the dance is laughable. It is a joke that UofL actually has fans who think like this. Please don’t respond again becuase your only embarrasing yourself.

hey now
if you want to express an opinion, go ahead, fine, that’s what the site is for. Let’s not get into name calling though. It doesn’t help anyone, and it’s not helping your argument. Also, lack of heart is a hard thing to quantify. Would you say Sosa’s reaction at the end of the Cuse game was a lack of heart? I don’t know, just food for thought.

Heart?
Do you go to the practices? Are you there during the off-season for the 5 AM running sessions? Do you go on the countless recruiting trips to the middle of butt-fuck nowhere to go watch a high school kid play in a half empty gym? Again, another ridiculous argument. Sure, all fans are going to question effort and talent when they lose…but how come you didn’t come out with this post after the cuse game? Just wondering.
we wasnt suppose to lose tha last game in freedom hall and senior night

oh god...don't get me started on the Raiders, bro
I did go to the Bengals game this year, which was amazing.
by UL is my hot hot sex on Mar 11, 2010 3:31 PM EST up reply actions
awesome..i wanted to go so bad.
it’s torture knowing that we have michael bush on the roster, but that the coaches won’t play him over mcfadden. sickening.
Went to the Chiefs game in Oakland, too
Bush had a big run but the Raiders lost. He fumbled in a big spot against the Bengals though and didn’t play much after that. They released Fargas right? Maybe Bush will see more of the field this year.
by UL is my hot hot sex on Mar 11, 2010 3:38 PM EST up reply actions
yeah cable pretty much gave up on him after the bengals game. although fargas and mcfadden both got injured in the game against the broncos, and bush came in to give them 140 yds and a td. but i really think cable hates him. mcfadden fumbles about three times as much as bush does, so that excuse was bulltrash.
he should get more touches though with fargas being gone, no doubt about it.
Bush just needs to leave then cause its obvious he’s not gonna get the carries he needs in oakland. he’s done proved himself time and time again thats he’s a beast

one thing i agree with you on haha..as much as i love the raiders (i know..have pity on me), they should trade him if they won’t use him. i know he has trade value.
shit, imagin bush wit 25 carries a game. he already had almost a 5yrd a carry average. he’s gotta be one of the best athletes to ever come outta tha city of louisville.
by louisvillefan#21 on Mar 11, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions
and at least u didnt turn ur back on tha raiders through all them bad seasons. ur gonna be mad but al davis…… gotta go, lol
by louisvillefan#21 on Mar 11, 2010 3:54 PM EST up reply actions
I think by releasing Fargas they have decided that they are going to use him. Bush got screwed because they gave Fargas the big deal and then drafted Bush and McFadden. That’s a lot of talent and not alot of carries on a bad team with no passing game. With Fargas gone there are only two backs.
They gone have to stop sleeping on me one day.. I gotta be one of the best

unless they draft another RB
If Best or Spiller are still there at Pick #8, these 40 times may be too enticing for Al Davis to pass up:
40 Yard Dash Times:
4.35: Jahvid Best, RB, California
4.37: C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson

well
there’s this thing called a “contract” and once both parties sign it, they are each expected to fulfill the terms and… oh never mind

I'm surprised Boeheim isn't already fired.
I heard he lied to his wife about how she looked in jean shorts.

Wait just a second...
is that you, “davidson07”?
You know, the guy who used to take any and every opportunity to call for Pitino’s job?
I guess a re-branding to “louisville fan#21” isn’t working out so well.
we may disagree, but it's been a lively convo nevertheless
and i’ve enjoyed it

I'll agree with the talent comment
It’s HIGH time Rick gets a young, hungry road warrior in here to recruit his ass off and bridge the gap. We haven’t had one top 5 recruiting class since he’s been here, have we? Pitino is great at getting average players to over-achieve. Think of what he could do with great players. The ’96 Kentucky squad comes to mind.

I hope Pitino stays here
until he retires, but he is not good at adjusting to tough man-to-man teams. Almost regardless of the talent in our lineup, a well coached team playing tough, in-your-face man has Pitino’s number more often than not. Having said that, every coach has an Achilles Heel. It’s not possible to cover all potential weaknesses in every match-up. I, for one, think this year’s problems are all about having no clear leader who isn’t a head case. Period.
Agreed.
Pitino has never been the bench coach that his predecessor was. His strengths are in teaching fundamentals and developing his players’ skills. Over his career, he has put a lot of players in the NBA and a lot of former players into the coaching ranks. But no coach can wave a magic wand and change his players’ personalities. We just have an abundance of kids who get very emotional. It’s their greatest strength and their greatest weakness.
wes... I mean davidson07
isn’t crafty enough to “rebrand” or start another name in order to bash pitino.
In fact, I am surprised that he hasn’t chimed in yet.
It’s not davidson07 because the grammar is terrible.
i dont understand
Why everyone is ripping this guy a new asshole. I haven’t been overly impressed by pitino lately myself. Yeah he got us a #1seed last year and that’s great but when you make as much as rick pitino makes I have no problem with a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately attitude. I don’t expect conference championships every year but I don’t expect losses to shitty teams, being on the tournament bubble, or seeing my team walk around the court like pouty babies either.

When we win...
…Pitino is the greatest thing since sliced bread
When we lose-the pitchforks come out.
Im with the others in this thread-WHO would do a better job? All credibility the OP has goes straight out the window b/c he fails to mention who would do a better job…
What do you mean
who would do a better job?? We weren’t even ranked all season for the most part, so theres at least 25 coaches out there doing a better job, and i’d guess we could poach 90% of them if we wanted to when rick leaves.
Really how hard is it gonna be to attract talent to louisville when we have a hundred bazillion dollar stadium and one of the top markets on the whole country. Its not like Ricky P is the only coach who can recruit.
I’m not saying i want him gone, personally i don’t, but at the same time I expect excellence EVERY year. These fucking down years are getting old. This is louisville basketball, if you can’t keep us in the top 25 don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
