Open Thread - Big East Tourney Early Games

Okay, hothot has made his picks.  Yesterday's low-seed games are out of the way.  With apologies to the Blue Devils, Friars, Scarlett Knights and Huskies, the Big East Tournament begins.....today.

Me, too.

Cincinnati has enough talent to give anyone in the league trouble on a given night. The big guy in the middle can be a beast; Stephenson is a scoring machine at times; and Vaughn can shoot on occasion. I was kinda pulling for Rutgers last night, thinking they’d be the easier mark.

jerry being out will hurt

i’m sure of it. we need that senior leadership. i think we’ll come out cold on a high after that big cuse game. Cincy playing for their tournament lives. Cronin playing for his job. We have a lot less to lose, just like Cuse had a lot less to lose Saturday. I hope I’m wrong!

Let's win one for the Gipper.

Jerry is our Gipper (though he is not dying).

LMAO about the Gipper

My Dad said that at the Syracuse game… “Well, now we know who our Gipper is. Let’s do it for Jerry!”

USF laying an egg

where is this great Jones character at???

by Cambroni Cardinals on Mar 10, 2010 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

17 Pts, 4 Reb, 4 Ast, 1 Stl, 1 Blk

I’m not watching the game but looks like Jones is doing his part from the box score.

Bah I was about to post this

USF is 14-51, and has missed 9 free throws. They’ve shot themselves out of this game. Jones is 5-16, but 9-14 at the stripe. Their lack of shooting is costing them, just like I think Cincinnati’s lack of shooting will cost them tonight.

Closer

I think. Louisville by 2 or 3. Nailbiter to the end. We’re in no matter what. Cincy really has only one chance and are much more desperate. Plus, we don’t play that well in late games. Plus, we usually kinda suck in NYC (last year notwithstanding). This first game will probably be our weakest showing.

GTown

is a scary team when they play together. But they’re kinda like us. They don’t always show up. If they get on a run, though, they can beat anyone in the country, no doubt about it.

Since when did we start allowing women to join this site?

Leigh, this is not ’Nam, this is sports blogging. There are rules.

With that, if sexist sports blogging is your thing, there’s a funny piece here that tackles the subject of “Girl watching game at sports bar” from the perspective of “douchebag who takes themself too seriously.” 50% sarcasm font in effect.

36-35 Marquette now, 12:33 to go.

Johnnies have spunk.

"It's not the South, it's not Chicago, and you don't think of it as you think of New York or L.A. It has some Southern romanticism to it, but also a Northern progressivism, this weird urban island in the middle of the state of Kentucky...For us, Louisville and the surrounding areas are the center of massive creativity and massive weirdness." - Jim James, My Morning Jacket

44-42 St. Johns with 7 mins to go.

With a dunk.

Make that 46-42

7-0 run by Johnnies...impressive

Golden Eagles just answered with another 3. 46-45 Johnnies.

Marquette is shooting 50% (8 for 16) from 3 today.

52-52 now, 3:20 to go.

I am definitely cheering for St. John’s now.

In other news

Nebraska, who went 2-14 in the Big XII, is spanking Missouri. I love conference tourney time!

57-55 Marquette

one of hot hot’s locks goes down

by rickmbari on Mar 10, 2010 4:31 PM EST reply actions

This game was always

gonna be close. St. John’s in MSG = much better team. Plus they matched up pretty well with Marquette. I wouldn’t have touched a bet on this game for anything.

by CardsFanTX on Mar 10, 2010 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

I thought 3.5 pts was too small...also surprised St. John's played so well in 2nd half.

The Johnnies defense is underrated but I felt Marquette’s depth and talent would hep them extend a lead in the 2nd half—not give up a lead. I’ve only had 3 or 4 “locks” that I’ve ever gone on record with (not here)…nothing in a conference tournament is a lock and the past two days are why even the sharpest gambler should stay away.

Crean.

Even if he isn’t there anymore, my mind still instantly associates him with Marquette. Bleh.

ND looks like us in some games

They just missed about 5 layups in one possession.
