Basketball scholarship situation

with 5-star Justin Coleman committing this afternoon, and potentially Gorgui Dieng following suit, this gives us a 3-man 2010 class (adding to Russ Smith).  We have three seniors on this year's team: Sosa, Smith, Delk.  There's also strong word that George Goode will not be on scholarship next season. So with only Preston slated to graduate next season, and having a HUGE 2011 class (Teague*, Blackshear, Taylor, Price, Chandler), where do the scholarships come from?

2009 Seniors:

Sosa, Smith, Delk

2010 Seniors:

Knowles, Goode

2011 Seniors:

Kuric, Swopshire, Samuels, Jennings, Chris Smith

2012 Seniors:

Marra, Buckles, Van Treese, Siva

I'd have to think that we'll get scholarships from Knowles and Goode, maybe an early defection from SS (after 2010-11), and a potential transfer from SVT and Marra?  I usually don't like to speculate, but wanting to get a better idea of how the numbers work out.

I don't think pitino has any problem pushing players out of the door

and I think Van Treese (though I like him) is a very likely candidate

I sure hope you're wrong.

Treating kids like a commodity can come back to bite you. Potential recuits (or at least their parents) will notice. It’s possible Van Treese could decide to go on his own to get more playing time somewhere else, but I think he can develop into a very solid post player for us. He looked good against UConn.

What UK did to its existing team last year was abominable, and earned an ESPN program all its own. Only an extreme egomaniac who doesn’t doubt his own superiority for a minute would commit to a school that has so very little commitment to its players.

Pitino seemed upbeat on Van Treese in his pre-Rutgers presser

He was talking about how bigs improve more slowly than guards and said “You’ll see tremendous growth in a Rakeem Buckles or a Van Treese, or a Swopshire, or Samardo and TJ.” I think he has high hopes for Stephan.

This is not usually a one-way deal like it was at UK

If it becomes very apparent that Van Treese is not going to get PT, he will want to leave and Pitino will help him find a scolarship someplace else.

Split them up?

Preston could probably drop his, he should be getting in-state tuition anyway. Maybe we can start a fund for him here at CC.

For what its worth

I bet we miss out on Teague and drop the recruitment of Dieng. Teague is the kind of home run player you just can’t really count on. Given the success of Brandon Jennings as a rookie, I wouldn’t be surpirsed to see him go to Europe for a year instead of college. Wouldn’t be the first time that’s happened to us. I also think Samuels is gone after next year. Then I’d have to agree with Centre24…SVT may have his scholarship pulled. I would hate to see that happen, but I have no idea how else that’d work.

I get more worried about Teague

The longer the recruitment takes. Certainly I understand he’s only a junior, but he had given himself timeframes in the past that got extended, and with us being the clear-cut favorite from the start, I don’t think it bodes well the longer this recruitment goes on.

Also, we’ve been burned in the past too many times for me to consider Chandler, Price, and Blackshear as true commits.

All that said, I’m hopeful for us getting Teague, I just feel it

Exactly...

We’ll lose at least one of those commits before they show up to campus. But who wouldn’t want to play in the new arena?

UK or UL?

Think about it. Would you rather live in Louisville or Lexington? I think the cities themselves should make a huge difference.

And the new arena

Where would you rather play?
