Preston Brown rounds out Charlie Strong's first Louisville recruiting class
Preston Brown, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker out of Cincinnati Northwest signed with Louisville this afternoon to put a cap on Charlie Strong's first Cardinal recruiting class.
Brown, a close friend of Winton Woods (OH) quarterback Dominique Brown, is a three-star prospect. Dominique Brown signed with U of L earlier in the day.
Hialeah (Fla.) offensive lineman Chris Acosta is the only Cardinal commit yet to fax a signed letter of intent, something he is expected to do any minute now.
This means Strong's inaugural U of L class shapes up like this (via Rivals):

Not bad for a class that was pegged somewhere in the 70s at the time Strong took over.
Though it would have been nice to have landed Chandler, Boone or Patterson, Torrian Wilson's surprise defection (rumored to be the product of a child on the way) was the only real major blow of the day, and Strong ended up getting a commitment from a player (Preston Brown) who most expected to head elsewhere this time a week ago.
Not bad at all.

Apparently Quan Weaver signed with Kentucky State.
He was asked to greyshirt next year.
It’s a good class, but I would have really liked to have gotten Torrian Wilson. We really need work on the o line.

Demling posted twice about Weaver
First he said Quan had signed with us. Fifteen minutes later he posted that the kid had signed with Ky. State but quoted him as saying he was looking forward to being at Louisville. I don’t know what’s up with that.

And that's the last time anyone will hear of Quan Weaver ever again
Kamal Hogan is a better get
I thought the same thing.
Looks really weird.
Either way, that doesn’t bother me much. We have enough running backs. If he comes, cool, if not, oh well.
Torrian Wilson still hurts.

Couple of four-stars and a boatload of threes
Not bad for a month’s worth of recruiting. I look forward to seeing how much immediate impact this class has, and even more to seeing what Strong can do with a whole year to recruit next year’s class.

you said it...
This looks like a huge class of signees. Its just good to see that guys from FL, GA, AL, AR & OH are deciding to come to louisville.
Avg. Stars: 2.88
While usually a pointless stat, it’s not bad for Strong’s first class.

Oh yeah!!
I can FINALLY drop my one word description of Louisville football… “sigh”… I’m FIRED UP!

HEAT UP THE OVEN!
Coaching is way more important than players (sure, some talent can help a LOT). Take a look back at Petrino’s recruiting classes. They were about on par with this one according to stars. A good coaching staff can develop all of these players into so much more. Vic Anderson was just a 3 star recruit and look how well he’s done under Krag. I think Long was a 2 star recruit. It seems like we have one of the best coaching staffs around right now, and I can’t wait to see what they make out of these kids. Good choice class of 2010! Welcome to Derby City, I can’t wait to cheer for you!

Give Strong another year and some wins.
We’ll be set next year. Don’t forget we fell off the map under Krap, I’m very pleased with what he was able to do in a short time.
I’m sure he will get our old players performing at another level too.
My question to you guys...
I would say I’m a much bigger basketball fan even though i plan on getting football season tickets this season but for those who know more about this class than me i need to know. How many of these guys do you see starting as freshman? I know Coach Strongs abilities as a coach alone will improve the team but before this season we still needed a lot more talent. Did we get that with this?
by Cambroni Cardinals on Feb 3, 2010 4:23 PM EST reply actions
i disagree that we needed a lot more talent
To win some games anyways. Maybe to be a bcs contender yeah, but its not like we were getting consistently dominated. For 3 seasons the difference between us making a bowl an having a losing season was pretty slim. Krags just couldn’t finish.
by Jason G on Feb 3, 2010 5:01 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I think we needed coaching more than we needed talent. That said you can always use more talent. Like Jason below said I think the difference between making a bowl under was more a function of the coaching than the lack of talent.
They gone have to stop sleeping on me one day.. I gotta be one of the best

Is Marcus Smith going to play QB still?
It seems like he and D. Brown are sort of cut from the same mold, so I would imagine one of them would switch positions
They still have Preston Brown at Cincy too.
I don’t think they’ve updated in a while.

Kicker
Did Charlie Strong not take a look at our kickers before he recruited? Last i checked they got better but were still horrible
There are two kickers
Andrew Fletcher from TN will greyshirt, then we have a KY walk-on as well… can’t remember the name, but Jody Demling has both of them in his blog, I believe.
did they change what used to be a redshirt?
or am i missing something?

A greyshirt is different...
Also, here is the link about the kickers:

As gng posted...
it’s pretty much a reverse early enroll. A grey shirt for the 2010 class will enroll January 2011 and still count towards the 2010 scholarship class.

I have to say I'm a little disappointed, but
still a GREAT start, especially when looking at where we were just before Coach Strong got here.
I was hoping we’d bring in at least a top 50 recruiting class. But, still a fabulous job when you consider the guy only had a short, short amount of time to not only recruit but to also convince each prospect that this is Louisville, not Kragsville.

About the grey shirts we have
Peterson, Bivin, Curry, and Hundertmark (with the other greyshirt being Andrew Fletcher the kicker), were Kragthorpe recruits that held over. I think there’s a reason most of us aren’t too familiar with the greyshirt process and it’s because good players don’t greyshirt.
Guarantee if this was next year, these guys wouldn’t have even been offered.
In all fairness...
Bivin is ranked as the #6 Center on ESPN and the #12 Center on Scout. Rivals has him as a DT because he played both in high school, but he’s apparently a better center prospect than DT prospect, and it’s probably what he’ll play since we got Salmon and Dunn.
So yeah, not exactly a crappy recruit. One of the better (if not best) offensive linemen in the state.
I see what you're saying
Bivin is highly ranked. But as we’ve seen, high school rankings – particularly with regards to lineman – are often flawed/incorrect.
It’s hard to really think of a recruit as being that good if they’re taking a grey shirt. I would assume that if a player grey shirts, then they’re going to red shirt, because otherwise, they would just take the redshirt. So that’s two years before they might ever see the field. I understand that it takes longer for lineman to develop, but to say that a player is going to need at least two years to develop before they might be good enough- not to contribute – but simply to step foot on the field, i don’t know, it just doesn’t seem like they’re really that good.
Just because a player greyshirts doesn't mean they'll redshirt.
The point of a greyshirt is to take the place of a redshirt for a player’s first year while not impacting the 25 scholarship limit. The greyshirt players will be here in the spring so they’ll get roughly half a year of development vs. a full year. Still better than none.
Good players do greyshirt
I’m also an FSU fan so I’ll use them as an example.
Josh Gehres is a class of 08 WR who grey shirted (and then red shirted so he’ll be a r-Fr. this season, his 3rd out of high school) who is your perfect possession receiver. He catches everything near him and a lot of people expect he could be a surprise to the common fan/other teams’ fans this season.
2010 recruit Holmes Onwukaife (rated a 3* but is much higher than that IMO, his rating was hurt by a broken leg his Jr. season) was thinking about grey shirting because he will only be 17 when he graduates and wants to give him body more time to mature. He will instead red shirt but that fact that he was willing considering grey shirting on his own shows that good players will grey shirt sometimes.

What's interesting to me...
is that some places I’ve read (like here) rate Florida’s defensive recruiting crop as one of the best in recent memory. Anyone have any doubt that Coach Strong convinced the vast majority of those kids to become Gators?
This year’s class is a nice foundation, but I think we’ll really start making hay in 2011.
