PITT leaving for big ten could be devastating to big east football.......

Rumors are running wild on message boards that an announcement is soon to come that pittsburgh will be joining the big ten...... Basketball would be able to with stand the blow but for football this could be devastating... Not only would this drop us to 7 teams but it takes away one of of the teams that helps us continue to carry our BCS tag.... With just seven teams it would force us to bring in most likely a conferece use team in my opinion ( memphis) which will lower the value of football which has been written off by many since the departure of Miami, Virginia Tech, Boston College in 2005 anyway... Pitt has always been the second choice behind Notre Dame ( who keeps turning down the offer ) because for one they have the one thing all big ten universities have and thats great academics.... To even be considered for the big ten you have to belong to the Association of American Universities which is a consortium of the nations 62 leading research institutions which also include Rutgers and Syracuse out of the big east..... Number two they would add good athletic programs to the conference with bottom feeders like indiana and Northwestern this would add another team that will be able to be very competitve in football and basketball.... And last they want to add more value to there television network and the more teams you have the more games you can air on the big ten network which is where the money part comes in, because the more big ten games they can keep off ESPN and on the big ten network the more money goes in there pocket.....Why would Pitt turn this offer down , theres no telling how many more million the school would bring in a year being apart of that conference....The only reason Notre Dame turns it down is because the football program already has its own television contract with ABC which is why they are indendent and have no ties with any conference..... .It also been talks of the big ten wanting to eventually expand to 14 teams which would most likely include Missouri who also fits there criteria and they also are being considered now for the 12th team.... Now if that were to happen should TJ make a counter move and try to get us to into the big 12 to replace missouri to save or football program? because lets face it if they decide to go to 14 theres no guarantee the wont come back and get syracuse or rutgers ( Which I mentioned earlier also belongs to the AAU ) to give them an east coast market.... And geographically us going to the big 12 wouldn't be that bad due to the fact six of the teams are in the midwest... I just think some type of plan needs to start to form in case this ship starts to sink we will have our life boat ready...... Going to that BCS game was like a shark tasting blood, gotta have more... And with Coach Strong on board it would be hard to see that BCS tag taken away.....Yes this is a basketball state but I think I speak for CARDINAL NATION when I say weve grown to love our football to.....

Wow long rant

Nothing has happened yet, I wouldn’t worry about it. Message Boards are not always the best places to get information. If it does happen, we’ll be fine. We’ll figure something out.

Big East Basketball > Big Ten Football

Also,

Big East Basketball > Big 12 Football

I’m saying that and I like football better as a sport, but the Big Ten is not even the best football league. It might be worth it if the SEC made Pitt an offer, but they’d still be giving up the best basketball conference. I don’t know really, but it seems like basketball should make more money with television markets anyway because there are so many more games.

Yes I think so to REAL......

but you take a league like the SEC that makes aton off football which got them a huge ESPN deal…. For example its hard to believe but most of kentucky money comes from football, it just goes to the basketball program…..

Pitt could only send football if they wanted to, right?

Notre Dame’s basketball program is Big East. Pitt wouldn’t technically HAVE to send both to the Big Ten would they? They would benefit hugely if they upgraded the f-ball team and left the b-ball program right where it is.

I would hope the Big East wouldn't stand for that

We don’t need them in basketball nearly as badly as we need them in football.

Technically, it's possible.

But the Big East (and presumably the Big Ten as well) would never allow it. Notre Dame gets by with it because their football program has so much history and their own TV contract (which binds them from entering a football conference until the contract is up). The Big East puts up with it because the basketball team brings in good money and they make Notre Dame play at least two Big East teams every year to bring in more revenue.

Pitt (and pretty much ever other team in the country, to be honest) doesn’t have the leverage to pull something like that off. Besides, Notre Dame’s football is independent, not in another conference. I think the NCAA only allows a team to be in multiple conferences if that particular sport doesn’t have conference support or if they’re in another division (like Villanova football is D-1AA). I could be wrong, though.

I just hope everything works out....

because I love being in the big east as far as basketball goes but were already walking on thin ice when it comes to football and replacing current teams with non-bcs teams in an 8 team conference could be that which breaks the ice

I agree. If the Big Ten takes one of our football schools then the Big East is in trouble.

And if our conference loses its BCS membership, we lose recruits. And likely our coach.

If Pitt wants to go to the Big 10 then let them pay their exit fee and send them on their way

The Big East could pick up University of Central Florida which I believe now has the 3rd largest enrollment in the country and is making quite a transition from commuter school to residential university. It has a very new on campus football stadium somewhat modeled after Papa John Cardinal Stadium. There football is getting better and better and if they joined the Bi East I suspect it would really boost their recruiting. Orlando is a great market, natural rival to USF in Tampa. I just can’t get excited about adding Memphis.

If any team moved to the Big Ten, I'd want it to be us.

And I don’t even want that. Big Ten basketball sucks. But it would be great for football.
