What...the hell...was that?

I'm fully aware that pretending what I witnessed tonight didn't actually occur will do nothing to help the situation, but that fact will in no way prevent me from doing anything else.

The fact that there are KY ads smothering the site right now is more appropriate than I'd care for it to be.

I wouldn't comment until morning, and even then I'd think long and hard before hitting the keyboard.

I am truly embarassed.

No actually it’s worse. Mortified comes to mind. I cannot remember less of an effort from a UofL squad. And this was a game that had to be won. Unbelievable.

not so fast my friend

If he could ever develop a three point jump shot he could be very, very valuable at the 3. He is the best rebounder we have under 6’6" and hustles. Admittedly he could improve on defending dribble penetration but then so could every other player on the team.

Convenient time for the New York Times to start a rumor. They start the rumor the day we go face 2 New York teams in a 4 day span. Coincidence? I think not.

any of you guys ever heard of

ad block plus? I dont see any ads…its quite nice

by twistedwedge on Feb 12, 2010 1:59 AM EST reply actions

I use it in Firefox.

But I predominantly use Safari. I’ve got an adblocker and a flash blocker installed, so all I see is the banner ad. I don’t know why that gets through the ad blocker, but it doesn’t bother me, so oh well.

am not surprised this morning...

went to bed at half, knowing if i had to watch a second half like the first, my tv and marriage may not survive. 19 point loss to st johns isn’t going to impress anyone, and regardless of the conspiracy theorists, there is no smoke without fire.
syracuse wins by 300 if we play like that this weekend…

by cr3 on Feb 12, 2010 3:30 AM EST reply actions

no heart

they didn’t seem to care last night. Sosa and Siva got picked like they were 5. There was no urgency in this team. Only person who played worth a damn was Samuels. He can only hit that hook shot so many times. Somebody help this guy. This team was awful last night. And it’s not that St Johns played well…they didn’t. They just actually cared about the end result of the game.

by Cambroni Cardinals on Feb 12, 2010 9:01 AM EST reply actions

It really did seem like nobody cared - except Samardo.

Just a really disturbing performance all the way around. Edgar and Jerry looked like anything but senior guards. Our freshmen looked like freshmen. And the effort was just lethargic. I was worried about this game and understood that we could lose, but the sloppiness and lack of effort was really shocking. What the hell happened to these guys?

"That's a fact Jack!!"

He is the problem I have with watching the rest of this season….the Cards just suffered a very humiliating defeat at a 3-8 team in conference. Let’s just say that during “lights out” last night a magic fairy went around to all of the hotel rooms and coldcocked our players into raw, no holds barred mentality that led them to dominate the rest of their conference play that carrys over into the BET and allowed the Cards to make it to the final four of our tourney and lose to a better team this year. The selection committee would take 5 minutes on selection sunday to decide weather or not UL was worthy enough to play in March Madness I think they would say ABSO-FACKIN NOT b/c of the this single loss. AN absolute embarrassment. My buddy said they looked like a womens team. I corrected him and said we looked like a St. Alberts 4th grade D team back in 1988 that won a single game and I should know b/c I was on that team….HORRIBLE!!! I cant stop screaming! I havent been this pissed at our university’s athletics since the Ron Cooper era. UGH!!!

I'm beyond pissed

I’m finally just resigned to the fact that we are not good this year.

Pitino said on the post-game show that we played our worst game of the season and they played their best. I was busy last night and couldn’t watch the game live, so I Tivoed it – but after hearing Pitino’s comments and reading the open thread here at CC, I deleted it without watching. I don’t need to be more depressed about it.

On the bright side, we don’t have to worry about the last game at Freedom Hall being an NIT game. At the rate we’re going, if we make the NIT we’ll be playing on the road as the underdogs.

by rickmbari on Feb 12, 2010 10:42 AM EST reply actions

I'm numb

and done. The bball season for all intensive purposes ended last night for me. If they can’t care when they’re into must win mode, then i’m not going to care either. Smardo was the only one that played like he gave a s—- last night.

This team’s best friend is going to be graduation. Get those guards out of here. Hopefully smardo stays, I think we can be decent next year if he does.

When’s baseball start?

by dlpfis79 on Feb 12, 2010 10:51 AM EST reply actions

Samardo's face in the OP says it all.

I think he agrees with you. He looks angry, or at least bitter.

by rickmbari on Feb 12, 2010 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

Don't mean to be a conspiracy theorist or anything, but

there’s something amiss. Bad chemistry? I don’t think so, because this team has appeared mutually supportive in the past. The Pitino stuff? Perhaps, but kids don’t pay as much attention to that stuff as we older farts do. So what’s left? We’re just not very talented; are bereft of real leadership; and we tend to fold when the pressure is on.

And there’s this bottom line for me. You can’t win in the Big East when your starting point guard doesn’t score and has more turnovers than assists. Sorry, but that was a premier bad Edgar showing last night.

Talent lacking...

Old Man… My Atlanta exiled sister asked me what was wrong with the Cards… my reply was that it’s a simple lack of talent. ‘Course… I’m an old man too.

I was confused...

with Swop getting the start over TJ. I swear I just read an article lately where Rick said it works better with Swop coming off the bench b/c it gives him a chance to size up the opponent, plus TJ has some kinda ego trip where he feels like he should be starting…it worked well the last few games, why the switch last night?

by *G* on Feb 12, 2010 12:03 PM EST reply actions

the johnnies use a small lineup so it was a size matchup

by Chicago's Cardinal 3 on Feb 13, 2010 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

Youre right the whole problem is Talent.....

Ricks laid back relaxed recruiting tactics of the past few years have caught up with him and he knows it…. ( He mentioned it earlier in the season ),,, Rick used to be an aggressive elite recruiter but somewhere along the line he lost his edge….this team has not one draft pick for this years draft on it….. thats what makes a team go… that star…yeah Earl was a lottery pick also but T Will was the star that led us to a great season last year….. This team lacks any form of star power and a leader has yet to emerge…

by TRUCARDFAN on Feb 12, 2010 12:15 PM EST reply actions

I think Samardo would be drafted if he chose to declare after this season.

Siva has shown promise as well. Both were pretty high on talent coming out of high school, if you can remember back that far. And it’s not all Pitino’s fault that Jerry, Sosa and Caracter didn’t develop into the NBA talents that Clark and TWill did. All were similar in talent level coming out of high school. Same could be said of Goode, Swop and TJ, all of whom were not quite as heralded as Clark or Samardo but were on par with TWill.

Some times these things work out, some times they don’t. Pitino brought in enough talent to win this year. The question is whether that talent was prepared and developed effectively enough to be successful. Much harder to prove but easier to throw stones at, given Pitino’s offcourt issues last year and his not-so-private motivational tactics (or head games if you prefer) with Caracter, TJ and Sosa.

Samardo

would be a mid-late second rounder as of this moment, imho. He started this season way too slow and passively.

Isn't it odd...

that a New York market “inputs” RP’s name for the head coaching job for the Nets, and Rick’s attitude is outraged that his name was even mentioned the same week we have have to play two New York teams on the road???

by NeverFold on Feb 12, 2010 12:22 PM EST reply actions

The guys

have been on a really fucked up trip. They had to leave a couple days early to beat out the snow. They get to NY and the first place they go to practice at they are locked out. So they have to wait for someone to let them in, then they get in and they’re changing light bulbs over top the gym, so they have to practice half court. I’m pretty sure they’re used to amazing facilities at home, and wouldn’t expect to have to practice half court anywhere. On top to that, St. Johns was pressing, which is generally Pitino’s move to throw other teams off. The whole lead up to this game and then game it self seems like a really bad nightmare. I want to wake up now. Worst thing is they’re stuck in NY for the week. Let’s hope they get some decent practice time in, though I think they’re practicing at MSG, which I’m sure is not a place of pleasant memories for them now.

by REALISTICCARDSFAN on Feb 12, 2010 12:41 PM EST reply actions

maybe adding to the problem...

Maybe Pitino didn’t feel like he needed to explain himself to the team, so when the guys asked about it he said something like, “don’t listen to that garbage, focus on the game”…then maybe a couple of the guys thought it was possible that he might leave and the team was pissed…

by *G* on Feb 12, 2010 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

I'm just pissed about the lack of effort and leadership

I could tell in the first 30 seconds that we weren’t going to win. Preston and Samardo need to be the captains next year. The leadership Sosa and Smith have offered is not sufficient. I don’t doubt that they care, but they simply aren’t the guys that the team can look to when it needs leadership.

And yeah, we don’t have as much talent as last year. But we have enough talent to make the tournament and avoid losses like this.

by Centre24 on Feb 12, 2010 1:14 PM EST reply actions

that's what kills me.

4 yr guys not having the leadership to take over the game. they seem as if the only way to win games is to score, and when they’re missing shots, they take the ‘sosa pouting’ mentality. uncc, west carolina, and st johns..losses by double digits.
and put charles strong’s picture back up on game day.
haven’t you seen bull durham?!!? never mess with a winning streak!!

Remainder of my student tickets

Two tickets, section 123… so three more games for a total of 6 tickets.
Notre Dame, Georgetown, and Syracuse
Anyone interested in buying them? I’m thinking of putting them on craigslist or ebay.

by guyngreen on Feb 12, 2010 2:43 PM EST reply actions

That's the way to attract recruits.

Walk away when the team loses. That looks really good.

I didn’t blame people for the football exodus. It was a train wreck that had only been getting worse over three years. This is one game in one year in what has been a fairly successful decade. Let’s chill out a little.

StubHub

I’ve posted my tickets on there for the last two games. I’ll look to sell Wednesday’s Notre Dame tickets somehow… if not at either of my work places, then maybe meet someone near UofL while I have my Master’s classes or downtown near where I work. Contact me off the thread (guitarzan80@yahoo.com)

i'm interested in going in on the tickets

probably can’t make a game myself, as i live just north of indy. but i’m down most weekends to help with my ailing father and would like to get a pair for the die-hard Cards-fan neighbor who has helped Mom watch over him. (Dad has alzheimers).
so if it helps anyone, i’d take a pair of those tix for any of the 3 games.

Let's don't forget baseball

Coach Dan McConnell has put together a terrific program, not just a team, but a program. We’re starting the season ranked and I’m sorry to say I’ve yet to see a game in person. Shame on me; they deserve better support. So, coming off an inexplicable basketball loss, I’m beginning to think about the U of L’s baseball future, ’cause it sure looks better than the basketball future at this point.

Very sad, no excuse

Get position under the basket, follow your shots, do not dribble the ball – PASS THE BALL (preferably to one of our players).
Do not shoot until AT LEAST the fourh pass.
Practice freethrows until arms hurt.

I have to agree.

Winning big games like Syracuse or Georgetown while losing to teams like St. John’s or (shudder) DePaul might actually be the worst thing for this team’s image and legacy.
