Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

Open Thread: Louisville at St. John's

I'm resting Charles. It wasn't an easy decision, especially since I'm ridiculously uneasy about this game to begin with, but I just feel like we've been running guys (and dogs) into the ground this year.

So we turn back to the lone talisman to bring home a road win this season

Louisville_medium_medium

GO CARDS.

Charles In Charge

New boy in the neighborhood
Lives downstairs and it is understood.
He’s there just to take good care of me,
Like he’s one of the family.

Charles in Charge
Of our days and our nights
Charles in Charge
Of our wrongs and our rights

And I sing, I want,
I want Charge in Charge of me.

Charles in Charge
Of our days and our nights
Charles in Charge
Of our wrongs and our rights

And I sing, I want,
I want Charge in Charge of me.

Not that we can’t come back, but I’m not feeling too great about our chances right now. If we go to the Carrier Dome and stun Cuse, is our tourney profile

b.) worse
c.) about the same

Two possessions with the ball and we jack up threes really quickly. Then Swop tries to pass through a guy and turns it over. We’re really not very good unless somebody is shooting lights out, and tonight nobody is. I’m afraid we’re finished, barring some kind of miracle later in the season.

That shot of the coaching staff on the bench was revealing.

Nobody was moving. Nobody was saying a thing. Their team is getting their asses handed to them and nobody seems to mind. I tell you, this is as pathetic a performance as I’ve ever seen out of a Louisville team this late in the year — not counting those awful teams at the end of Denny’s tenure.

Somebody ought to be embarrassed by this. Really embarrassed. Forget the NCAA; we’re done.

There are certainly teams we can beat. Syracuse and Georgetown aren’t among them. And we can’t get to the tournament without that, after a clunker like this. We’re screwed and we’re in the process of screwing ourselves tonight. The lack of effort in a game so important is just astounding.

by centrecard on Feb 11, 2010 9:01 PM EST reply actions

Who ever thought we would see this in Year 9 of the Pitino era?

I guess that pisses me off as much as anything. I don’t expect to be in contention for the national title every year, but I thought humiliating losses to bad teams wouldn’t be happening by this point in his tenure (if it got this far).

Maybe I have unrealistic expectations because of what he did at UK. I probably do, and I just need to accept that the NIT comes every 4 years or so. But this sucks.

by cardsinindy2010 on Feb 11, 2010 9:01 PM EST reply actions

In all fairness..

UNC is likely NIT-bound this year too. I know it’s no excuse, and at least they’ve got a few final fours and NCs under their belts, but I’m just saying that any time you lose a lot of talent, there are lulls.

But it would be much easier to stomach if we had a national championship win, or even a final four last year.

by CARD_G6 on Feb 11, 2010 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

Only six coaches have outperformed Pitino since he’s been at Louisville.

by centrecard on Feb 11, 2010 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

I dont buy it

Im sick of hearing “how great” he is. How much he “prepares” guys for the NBA (two lottery picks in 9 years? 3 active NBA players?). Really all rick pitino is is “reputation” and after 9 years thats all he continues to be. Im sick of his drama..

by twistedwedge on Feb 11, 2010 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

He frustrates me as well, but just look at the numbers

by twistedwedge on Feb 11, 2010 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

UConn is another example

They were in the Final 4, and they suck. And a few years ago they were like 12th in the Big East

by cardscott5 on Feb 11, 2010 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed that UConn and UNC illustrate how hard it is to stay on top.

Like I said, I acknowledge having outsized expectations, and that is probably a function of the fact that Rick was such an outsized success at UK. Also agree that a Final Four last year would have gone a long way toward making this year easier to stomach. UConn and UNC have more recent Final Fours and NCs to comfort themselves. And of course, Rick had nothing to do with our 86-01 drought, which probably exacerbates the frustration as well.

Let's see that comparison, because I have a hell of a hard time believing that.

And it includes things like winning pct., losing seasons, conference titles, etc. Not just NCAA performance.

ok..

RP-last 8 seasons 200-73
Denny last 8 157-103
RP-8 conference seasons 90-42
Denny-8 conference seasons 74-40
RP-2 conference and regular season champs, 1 conference tourney champ
Denny-1 conference and regular season champs, 1 conference tourney champ

Big East =! Conference USA

I know it was better then, but still…

Mardo-TJ Combo

As much as I love Swop, I was not a fan of giving up on the Mardo-TJ experiment. Did they play together at all tonight? I only saw part of the game, but I did not see them together.

I would expect to see them together against Cuse. Their two big men seem to work pretty well together, and neither one is a marksman who can spread the floor.

Swop quickly proved (again) why he shouldn't be a starter

He was much better coming off the bench. I just don’t see what Pitino see’s in this guy. Afer the UConn game he said “the fans have no clue what they’re talking about” in regards to our gripes about the guy. Anyone could easily get the hint after that stupid, selfish spot up (again missed) 3 in the second half. He wasn’t looking for anyone. Just stop, pull up, epic fail. Eh, and then there’s Sosa……….

Story for another day.

i have no idea

How that happened. And I’m a St. John’s fan. Well, I kind of know – Edgar Sosa. Man, I hate Edgar Sosa. His head is a knuckle, and he really showed it tonight.

Seriously, sorry for the loss. Red Storm fans probably might have preferred a loss to move us on to the next coach/ stage, too.

Pretty sure that's coming anyway

but thanks for pretending to be disgraced by a huge win

if the team keeps winning

St. John’s will have the same coach. They don’t really want to make a change for some reason.

The last time we were embarrassed this bad IN FEBRUARY was...

The question I meant to ask initially….The complete lack of effort was scary…Are they quitting on RP?

by CactusCard on Feb 11, 2010 9:36 PM EST reply actions

lol dude its not on sosa

seriously did you even watch the game? it was lack of focus and effort all around. no way you can pin this one on anyone but the coaches

Sosa is a senior leader

Pitino may deserve some of the blame (how much is open to debate) but the 5 or 6 TO’s by a Senior PG are just AWFUL. That’s been a big difference between this year and last year’s team. Also, I don’t think that Rick has had the talent of some of the coaches you might want to replace him with.
