Open Thread: Louisville at St. John's
I'm resting Charles. It wasn't an easy decision, especially since I'm ridiculously uneasy about this game to begin with, but I just feel like we've been running guys (and dogs) into the ground this year.
So we turn back to the lone talisman to bring home a road win this season

GO CARDS.

Charles In Charge
New boy in the neighborhood
Lives downstairs and it is understood.
He’s there just to take good care of me,
Like he’s one of the family.
Charles in Charge
Of our days and our nights
Charles in Charge
Of our wrongs and our rights
And I sing, I want,
I want Charge in Charge of me.

Conspiracy theory
Someone from St. Johns contacted the NY papers and fed them the Nets story to hopefully distract the team from the game tonight.

Our MSG run last year=Peyton Manning's Super Bowl win
Happened once, then back to the same old story
In all honesty...
The Colts would be a wild card team if they didn’t have Peyton Manning. At best.
Peyton Manning is actually 7-3 in playoff games since 2002. Before then, the Colts wouldn’t have even been in the playoffs if it weren’t for Peyton.

Not that we can’t come back, but I’m not feeling too great about our chances right now. If we go to the Carrier Dome and stun Cuse, is our tourney profile
a.) better than it was before this game
b.) worse
c.) about the same

Two possessions with the ball and we jack up threes really quickly. Then Swop tries to pass through a guy and turns it over. We’re really not very good unless somebody is shooting lights out, and tonight nobody is. I’m afraid we’re finished, barring some kind of miracle later in the season.

That shot of the coaching staff on the bench was revealing.
Nobody was moving. Nobody was saying a thing. Their team is getting their asses handed to them and nobody seems to mind. I tell you, this is as pathetic a performance as I’ve ever seen out of a Louisville team this late in the year — not counting those awful teams at the end of Denny’s tenure.
Somebody ought to be embarrassed by this. Really embarrassed. Forget the NCAA; we’re done.

Edgar needs to be a go to guy as a senor and he hasn’t yet filled those shoes.
Emotional responses
Yeah, this game has been an absolute clunker, but to act like we can’t win the rest of the year is an overstatement. We’ve been in every game this year but this one.
I'm sorry...
But all the bounces have gone St John’s way. We’ve been awful, but even where the effort is there, St. John’s gets the play. Combined has led to this ridiculous loss.
Losing sucks.
that being said...
the front court and its lack of hustle in rebounding has severally hindered this team tonight.
I don't think it's been rebounding
Samardo has had a decent game, at least in his terms. Our Backcourt/wings REALLY let us down with Turnover’s/No Offense

There are certainly teams we can beat. Syracuse and Georgetown aren’t among them. And we can’t get to the tournament without that, after a clunker like this. We’re screwed and we’re in the process of screwing ourselves tonight. The lack of effort in a game so important is just astounding.

bla bla bla…
Who ever thought we would see this in Year 9 of the Pitino era?
I guess that pisses me off as much as anything. I don’t expect to be in contention for the national title every year, but I thought humiliating losses to bad teams wouldn’t be happening by this point in his tenure (if it got this far).
Maybe I have unrealistic expectations because of what he did at UK. I probably do, and I just need to accept that the NIT comes every 4 years or so. But this sucks.
by cardsinindy2010 on Feb 11, 2010 9:01 PM EST reply actions
In all fairness..
UNC is likely NIT-bound this year too. I know it’s no excuse, and at least they’ve got a few final fours and NCs under their belts, but I’m just saying that any time you lose a lot of talent, there are lulls.
But it would be much easier to stomach if we had a national championship win, or even a final four last year.
I dont buy it
Im sick of hearing “how great” he is. How much he “prepares” guys for the NBA (two lottery picks in 9 years? 3 active NBA players?). Really all rick pitino is is “reputation” and after 9 years thats all he continues to be. Im sick of his drama..

Like I said, I acknowledge having outsized expectations, and that is probably a function of the fact that Rick was such an outsized success at UK. Also agree that a Final Four last year would have gone a long way toward making this year easier to stomach. UConn and UNC have more recent Final Fours and NCs to comfort themselves. And of course, Rick had nothing to do with our 86-01 drought, which probably exacerbates the frustration as well.

if not for RP drama
we should have made it to the FF last year…if not beyond

so bad we get cut for another game in Lex
good grief…
Sorry
Not good, but we seem to be playing with energy now.

with a lot less talent than RP has underachieved with
sorry but Pearls resume lately is much more impressive than ricks when you compare what each has done with the talent on the team

What the fuck was that?
?
"It's not the South, it's not Chicago, and you don't think of it as you think of New York or L.A. It has some Southern romanticism to it, but also a Northern progressivism, this weird urban island in the middle of the state of Kentucky...For us, Louisville and the surrounding areas are the center of massive creativity and massive weirdness." - Jim James, My Morning Jacket
nope
it was a anal invasion with 40 grit sandpaper

Down 6, two possessions
Three Marra, three Swop. Clunkers, then a 42-0 run.
Because it’s not like we have three guards who have made 3s deep into March for several years to shoot those, right?
This was not ideal.
i know i'm not exactly welcome around here
but seriously, what did you guys think would happen when you have a coach more interest in bopping chicks in italian restaurants than coaching?
Im starting to wonder if there might be a little substance to what youre saying
cause it sure didnt look much like focus tonight

you know it's true
his lack of self control has marred the reputation of school we all love. all of you gave me the finger when i said we should fire him for bad performance (compare rick’s first 9 years to Denny’s last 9 and I think you’ll see there’s not much difference, except for the ‘05 final four and that Rick’s taken us to more NITs); well now he’s a disgrace on and off the court.
eh...
three sweet sixteens and an elite eight doesnt outweigh a final four and back to back elite eights..but im starting to wonder why RPs teams underachieved (like last years-should have been an FF or better IMO)
by twistedwedge on Feb 11, 2010 9:45 PM EST up reply actions
Let's see that comparison, because I have a hell of a hard time believing that.
And it includes things like winning pct., losing seasons, conference titles, etc. Not just NCAA performance.

ok..
RP-last 8 seasons 200-73
Denny last 8 157-103
RP-8 conference seasons 90-42
Denny-8 conference seasons 74-40
RP-2 conference and regular season champs, 1 conference tourney champ
Denny-1 conference and regular season champs, 1 conference tourney champ

We've won three conference tourneys under Pitino
by Mike Rutherford on Feb 11, 2010 11:26 PM EST up reply actions
so 2 conference/tourney champs+1 conference only=3 right
I just looked that stuff up on wikipedia…

Mardo-TJ Combo
As much as I love Swop, I was not a fan of giving up on the Mardo-TJ experiment. Did they play together at all tonight? I only saw part of the game, but I did not see them together.
I would expect to see them together against Cuse. Their two big men seem to work pretty well together, and neither one is a marksman who can spread the floor.

I shudder the thought of playing 'cuse
based on tonight we would lose by 40
by twistedwedge on Feb 11, 2010 9:35 PM EST up reply actions
Swop quickly proved (again) why he shouldn't be a starter
He was much better coming off the bench. I just don’t see what Pitino see’s in this guy. Afer the UConn game he said “the fans have no clue what they’re talking about” in regards to our gripes about the guy. Anyone could easily get the hint after that stupid, selfish spot up (again missed) 3 in the second half. He wasn’t looking for anyone. Just stop, pull up, epic fail. Eh, and then there’s Sosa……….
Story for another day.

i have no idea
How that happened. And I’m a St. John’s fan. Well, I kind of know – Edgar Sosa. Man, I hate Edgar Sosa. His head is a knuckle, and he really showed it tonight.
Seriously, sorry for the loss. Red Storm fans probably might have preferred a loss to move us on to the next coach/ stage, too.
if the team keeps winning
St. John’s will have the same coach. They don’t really want to make a change for some reason.
The last time we were embarrassed this bad IN FEBRUARY was...
The question I meant to ask initially….The complete lack of effort was scary…Are they quitting on RP?
lol dude its not on sosa
seriously did you even watch the game? it was lack of focus and effort all around. no way you can pin this one on anyone but the coaches
you too eh?
he matched my scoring, FT shooting and 3pt % tonight..lol

Sosa is a senior leader
Pitino may deserve some of the blame (how much is open to debate) but the 5 or 6 TO’s by a Senior PG are just AWFUL. That’s been a big difference between this year and last year’s team. Also, I don’t think that Rick has had the talent of some of the coaches you might want to replace him with.
