Pitino comes out swinging against Nets rumor
The following quotes are from the C-J and ESPN stories.
--"So what do you do when you're tired and worn out?" Pitino said. "You don't go to the Caribbean, you don't go to the Bahamas, you take the New Jersey Nets job where they've won four games."
--"Just think of the rationale behind the whole thing. If you're going to get rejuvenated you don't take over the Nets."
--"There's absolutely no truth to it. I shouldn't address it because there's no truth to it," said Pitino, who encountered similar reports last May that had him linked to the Sacramento Kings. "Rod Thorn is a longtime friend of mine. The only conversations we've ever had together … it's never about coaching."
--"Because of what happened at West Virginia, I'm worn out?" he told ESPN's Forde. "I've been on the road recruiting, I've been working 18-hour days, and I'm worn out because I went into a place where they denigrate everybody?"
--"I don't think our players really care about rumors too much; they don't get into that," Pitino said. "They haven't been distracted one bit with anything the entire year. They're a focused group."
I love it. To date, it's the best he's handled one of these situations.

The Pitino Haters are out in full force today
UK fans are all over this guy today. Get over it. He isn’t leaving, you can go back to talking about Calapari now. People who think this guy NEEDS to leave UL for our sake are idiots too and I’m talking to UL fans as well. Who are we going to get that would put us in a better situation? Did you forget that just last season we were the Big East regular and tourney champs and these past 3 out of 4 years UL is been in the Elite 8. We were in the final 8 out of 365 teams..that’s a pretty good job. Pitino…stay forever, shut em up!

except...

Ian O’Connor is an AP staff writer and he has a LOT of stuff on Pitino and the Nets job… and then Pitino and St. John’s. As a St. John’s fan, much of what’s in here sounds like a bad idea. St. John’s will never have the money for Pitino and will waste time trying to woo him; and Mark Jackson as head coach? He’s never coached ANYWHERE. But I digress:
Pitino IX: Back to St. Johns, Lou Carnesecca loves Pitino and might even push him over his cherished pt guard, Mark Jackson…
Pitino XVIII: Lou Carnesecca at St. Johns would push Catholic administrators to look past the scandal and make the big-money run

Pitino XV: As @WojYahooNBA stated, NBA teams not courting Rick; he’s courting them. Rick Friend wants him to let St Johns court him…
Pitino VII: Rick also believes Mark Jackson will get St Johns job, anyway…Rick is close to St Johns alums and thinks Jax will take job…
Pitino VI: Though Rick has worked back-channels to Prokhorov, he would consider St. Johns as well. Rick concerned St. Johns cant afford him.
St. John's
doesn’t even have an SB Nation fanblog so I can’t see this happening.

we have
Like 30 fans. Maybe I’ll look into starting one for St. John’s. THEN you’ll worry about Pitino moving on!!!!
(joking)
Yeah
all in good fun. It’s amazing that the program hasn’t had continued success and support given what Carnesecca (and Frank McGuire) built over the half a century of basketball.

I remember when I bought my first good TV
I rushed home to hook it up so I could watch St. Johns-UNC in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic. Guess that would have been early ‘80s time frame. Loved Carnesecca … anyway, yeah, it’s a shame they have not continued the tradition.
