Pitino rumors make earliest debut yet
We can't even make it to the conference tournament anymore before this starts. It's just like Christmas.
The New York Daily News reported early this morning that Rick Pitino has made himself a candidate for the New Jersey Nets head coaching job. Nets president Rod Thorn has refuted the story and Pitino's camp is reportedly claiming there has been "no direct contact" between the parties.
Still, the Post is sticking to its sources, claiming Pitino is definitely interested in the job despite the fact that the Nets are unlikely to pursue him.
So what happens next? Well, Pitino is asked about this either before or after the game and he denies the rumors by either refusing to comment on them because they're ridiculous (if he's pissed) or throwing out a quick one-liner (if he's in a good mood).
While I do believe that some of the reports of Pitino's interest in returning to the NBA in the days and months leading up to the break of the Sypher scandal were valid, this one doesn't warrant any extended attention. Even if the Pitino camp was putting out feelers (which I highly doubt, but won't completely dismiss), the Nets already have a short list and Louisville's head coach isn't anywhere on it.
Still, we could have done without this.

I just am not certain that I care anymore
This website is my favorite when it comes to all matters U of L, and I would hate to see it cluttered for the next two months with stories of Rick’s predictable spring dance that he will have with another program or NBA organization. I just don’t care anymore.
I don’t want him to go, that is certain, but I’m weary of this entire saga. I’m also a bit disappointed that we haven’t been in the championship game in the last nine seasons, but that’s another post.
I hope he stays, but if he doesn’t, I won’t lose one second of sleep over it.
As a UK fan, even I call BS on this
From the story linked above
Sources close to Pitino, 57, say the ex-Knick coach and native of Long Island continues to be worn down from the Louisville sex scandal that erupted last summer and almost cost him his job. In terms of basketball, friends say that he feels a threat from in-state arch-rival Kentucky, which has put itself back into the national spotlight with first-year coach John Calipari and one of the top recruiting classes in recent years.
Pitino may be a lot of things, but being afraid of competition is not one of them.
First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...
Yeah this is a bunch of crap
and it makes me mad that libel is becoming an archaic word.

Rick needs to quash this crap quickly.
After the university stood by him last summer, if he is exploring other jobs, I think TJ has a right to be seriously angry. I would prefer that he stay, but this dance has gotten really old; if he has a wandering eye, send him packing.

Be carefule what you wish for
we said the same thing about Petrino. I know we are an established program in basketball so we would probably get the best coach available, but still….I have bad memories

Screw Petrino.
I wouldn’t take him back if he was begging on his knees. Loyalty is equally as important to me.

Why the non-denial denial?
If he isn’t interested, then his response should be “I have no interest in the job, I want to stay here, and there is absolutely no truth to the rumor.”
Instead, we get “there has been no direct contact” between Pitino and the Nets, implying that the contact has been through an intermediary. I don’t like it. This is at a minimum going to impact Rick’s ability to recruit.
Exactly. Rick needs to either decide he is staying here or leave.
We can’t afford to have recruiting f’d up by Rick flirting with other jobs. If he isn’t going to fully commit himself to this job for the next 3-4 years, then move on.
I know, I know, be careful what you wish for. But after what happened last summer, I think it shows a complete lack of respect for the university and the fans if Rick is now reaching out to other teams. Only so much humiliation should be tolerated.

It just doesn't make sense
Pitino hasn’t been a good NBA coach and he isn’t exactly having a stellar season at UL. He has said many times he doesn’t want to coach much longer, and the New Jersey Nets are hardly a place to go have instant success in the NBA and ride off into the sunset. If he really wanted to be done at UL, he would retire, not go take a headache job in the NBA.
Plus, I doubt the Nets would even want him if this was true (which i doubt it is). And all of his sex scandal stuff has died down by now, especially after what tiger woods did. This just isn’t logical and sounds like it was stirred up by some New York asshole who forgot about Pitino until he came to town to play St. Johns
Nickel, Cheese!
Backhanded recruiting tactic, nothing more.
Someone drops a (somewhat) believable rumor in some shithead reporters ear and it catches fire in a non-news down period.
It’s a dirty, dirty game. Same as politics.
Move on, nothing to see here
