A Calipari shot at RP, or an innocent and telling detail?

A CBSS article yesterday quotes Coach Calipari thusly:

"Though Calipari said it would be 'an honor' to coach for an international team, he's not sure he has the time to devote to the position because of the way it would cut into his recruiting time."

Star-divide

I submit for your consideration that there are 2 possible meanings to such a statement.

1 He's not sure he has the time to devote to the position because of the way it would cut into his recruiting time. (Meaning, he was just saying how it is; nothing more, nothing less.)

2 Coach Pitino doesn't get the recruiting classes he does because Coach Cal doesn't get distracted by extra affairs (double entrendre intended) such as foreign coaching or Olympics.

Coach Cal isn't an idiot; clearly he would be aware of the DR team question being media hyped in relation to Coach Rick's newly announced coaching gig with the Puerto Rico National Team. So, it's not a large leap to infer that he's taking a jab of some kind at Mr. Pitino.

Interestingly (and possibly related to any entendres) there is no author indicated for this CBSS article.

The recruiting comparison is a very interesting question. Although CC has clearly had more successful recruits in terms of class rankings and NBA draftees at UK these past few years, it can be easily argued that RP and UL have been more sucessful.

I could begin extrapolating several analysis of which of #1 or 2 above are correct, and what that reveals to us - but I'm hoping fellow fans will do that for me below.  :-)

Coaching the US team didn't seem to keep K from having success...

But then again, Coach K can actually coach the kids. If you can’t coach, you’d better be able to recruit and spend as much time as possible doing so. I happen to think Pitino is a better coach than he is a recruiter. Beyond that, I’m confident that raising his profile internationally will only help him get better at recruiting kids to UoL.

Screw UK.

I don’t care what they say or do, as long as they don’t bother me with their idiodicy.

(I’m not saying this is a bad post or anything, just offering my opinion on the way I feel about UK.)

If asked to coach the DR team, Cal would say "no" because he realizes . . .

(1) he’s only successful when he can just rely on his players’ raw talent;

(2) he’s likely to accidently pay a recruit in Dominican pesos; and

(3) coaching the DR team would only bring trouble and 2010 was troubling enough for Hispaniola.
