What is wrong with the new arena

OK, so last night's game was awesome, in just about every conceivable way.  The crowd showed up early and was loud and rowdy.  The team played agressive and tough.  The $6 coors lights were tasty as they could be.  There was an empty bathroom a couple dozen steps from my seats.  This looked and felt like the big time.

But there was, and still is, one huge problem with this arena of our.

WHY CAN'T I EFFING USE MY G.D. CELL PHONE!!!*

For the life of me I can't believe they spent a quarter of a billion dollars and no one did a study as to whether or not the partons would be able to use the mobile devices.  I can't call, I can't text, I can't hit up game tracker on my g.d. droid.  I know its not the network, it works fine when I go out near the windows around the concourse.  But sitting in my seat...NO BARS.

So what the Eff is wrong with this arena that blocks cell phone usage.  And what do we have to do to fix it.

*sorry mike for excessive use of caps and exclaimation points...

It does suck...

But when you put 22,000 plus people into one place its going to be hard to get any type of service. I know I barely got any in freedom hall. I would be fine with them just putting wi-fi in the place so that i could at least surf the web on my phone.

you and 6,000 other people

Wi-fi is no different from cell phone service in that regard. What kind of bandwidth are you going to get when that many people try to use any wireless network at the same time?

I actually noticed this before there was 22k there

its not a bandwith problem from what I can tell, its a signa strength issue. I got no bars when I was in there for a tour back in October. they need to put a cell phone tower on the scoreboard so that we can txt pics of how awesome the place looks

Tried multiple times to text a picture of my seats…no dice. Oh well, does it seem to only be AT&T or are Verizon customers affected as well?

I've got Verizon

I could get some texts through, but no calls

Some repeaters throughout would probably help immensely

actually...

wifi IS in the building. although i don’t know how well it was working because it never locked on while i was looking for some stats and i never went back to it once the game got going after timeouts.

also, you can’t get any radio signals inside either. so that means no listening to the radio calls while you’re watching the game, which kinda sucks.

maybe it was designed this way on purpose..

because a bunch of fans on their phones makes the place look less glam?

a friend

on the arena board who was in charge of wifi and cell service inside the arena told me that the appropriate companies have been given keys to enter and fix those problems. obviously, they haven’t. big jim must have handed out the checks too fast.

Dickie V

made a comment during a game that the only thing he didn’t like about “Pitino’s Palace” was that he couldn’t tweet from his phone during the game.

I was able to connect to Wifi with my phone.

And Me and my father were able to call and text while in the Arena. I have Sprint and he has AT&T.

I agree

My Droid is next to useless in there. I’d say it’s the concrete and the way the structured was designed. Sort of like the problems you see when you’re inside a parking garage. The signal either isn’t as strong, or isn’t there at all.

Not much they can do structurally. Wifi would be the answer if there weren’t 22,000 users in the building. Maybe Altai Super WiFi Solution?

Or maybe they designed it that way intentionally so people would actually watch the games instead of playing with their phones. Either way, would be nice to have a signal in there.

They can put micro cells inside the building

It’s done all the time inside buildings where cell service is desired. The cell network is designed for outdoor use.

Exactly.

They just need some repeaters for the cell service.

Mine worked and I have Sprint too....

Although, the signal is lower than usual, I can make calls and use the mobile network on my Droid.

Cell Service Does Suck

What about the concession service? 50% of the people weren’t back in their seats by the start of the second half. Even 5 minutes in, a handful of people still hadn’t sat down.

Tweaks that can be made

1. TVs in the bar/club areas were not turned to other games previous to our game. You are bombarded by more ads by Makers Mark or whatever else.
2. Lack of cell service. There are open/unlocked wi-fi connections available in the arena but they are slow
3. Lack of scoreboards. You either have to look in the endzone or at the video wall. From our seats, it means that you have to look directly up and miss game action. It would be helpful to have another scoreboard on either the ribbon boards, on the walls just below the suites, or at the scorer’s table.
4. Point of sale cash registers malfunctioning and some of the staff hasn’t been trained properly, but this will change over time.

Also

the pre-game video is terrible. I liked the fact that they included Freedom Hall but they need to look elsewhere on who they hire to do these.

i wish i knew what was going on in the suite levels.

I totally agree with the scoreboards and concession staff. Its like going to McDonalds on dixie at lunch time. I mean did they pass out joints at the staff meeting this morning or what?
