Around SBN: Troubled Yankees Join Troubled Red Sox In Last Place

If you can't beat 'em...

Allow me to vent a little bit and hopefully be talked back from the ledge. With the news on Miller's supposed announcement to Baylor, Pitino's acceptance of Tony Woods, and all the problems the program is having getting 5-star recruits, I think Louisville may need to join the rest of the NCAA and just go rogue.

Scott Drew is considered as dirty as they come. Kentucky is all but a minor league NBA team (salaries included). Agents are lauded for writing SI articles outlining their shady dealings and declaring that almost ALL amateur athletes are far from it.

If the rest of the college world is blatantly ignoring the speed limit, why are we puttering along in the far right lane 5 miles below the posted sign? Frankly I think we're playing the game backwards. Losing big in the public relations department (Woods, Sypher) and playing it straight in the recruiting game.

If recruiting has really become a teen-fawning, scratch my palm kinda world, we might as well hop in that pool and stop criticizing the majority of our fellow NCAA programs for peeing in it.

PS - I hate what college athletics is becoming.

PPS - This space reserved for more idioms.

the title of this post makes me cringe almost as much as reading about Tony Woods' altercation

I think there’s still room to negotiate the college basketball world w/o stooping to shady dealings. You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.

Wouldn't it be nice

if the only reason Pitino was losing out on recruits is because he’s not cheating and everyone else is?

Not sure which one is the dreamer.

I see I've raised some cat dander...

Do you guys have some sort of web searching algorithm that sniffs out all smack about UK? You really should sell that and move on up like the Jeffersons.

I hardly think Pitino is squeaky clean, BTW. He’s just not skirting rules and greasing palms as severely as others are willing to do it these days.

Perhaps more importantly, he isn’t connecting with what these kids want today (both monetary/perks and development-wise). Guys like Drew will promise PT, shots, etc to get a stud on campus. Pitino, right or wrong, won’t… and he bemoans the microwave society and players “not buying in” to boot.

Pitino's problem

The problem IMHO is and has always been that Pitino’s system is not friendly to the one and done type player. Any top level player with aspirations of jumping quickly to the pros (and which kid doesn’t have that dream) is going to be easily persuaded to go somewhere else. Samardo Samuels is a perfect example. Top rated high-school recruit who didn’t make it out after 1 year. As fans, we know why, but for a recruit looking in from a distance, it wouldn’t be hard to “sell” them on Pitino screwing him oveer. We have some of the best facilities, best fans, and great tradition, yet have a very hard time closing the deal because we can’t show one example of a kid Pitino sent to the NBA after one year at UL.

by nategolf on Oct 18, 2010 4:35 PM EDT reply actions

As Devil's advocate here...

Samuels did sign a multi-million dollar contract with an NBA team. Makes it harder to determine who was actually holding him back.

by CARD_G6 on Oct 19, 2010 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

So let me get this straight

PItino can’t recruit the players who want a quick route to the NBA because he doesn’t get players to the NBA, for example Samardo Samuels, who played two years for him and signed a multimillion dollar contract with an NBA team. Did I get that right?

As long as we are getting it straight...

WHO thought Samuals would make it in the NBA based on his performance at U of L? He made it AFTER he got away from Pitino and started working out with people who apparently COULD get him ready for the NBA. IMO this situation made Pitino come off looking even WORSE! Did I get that right?

by scorpiocard on Oct 19, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

so two years of Pitino ruined him and a few weeks of NBA camp fixed him up. Okay.

perception or reality?

Coaches who are recruiting the same kids we are (Baylor, UK, et al) will use the perception angle against Pitino. Sure Pitino made Samardo better but what does it look like after an opposing coach has spun it against RP?

by UL is my hot hot sex on Oct 19, 2010 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

This.

Coaches are going to say the same things we were when Samuels announced. He wasn’t ready, he would not even get signed, and end up in Jamaica. And after just a few weeks of training in D.C. he winds up signing with Cleveland.

by CardinalEmpire.com on Oct 19, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Sort of....

No. For two years Pitino had him playing the 5 and he is a natural 4. THIS held up his development. He wanted to play the 4, and he should have played the 4, with Jennings at the 5…but Mr Hard Head Ego would not do it because he doesn’t like Jenning’s defense. (A narcisitst ALWAYS has to have a punching bag) THAT is why Samuals left. He was not drafted because he was not good at playing the 5. He started working out with some people who could develop him at his natural postion which is the 4, AFTER the draft, and ended up getting signed to a free agent contract. As a result of that Pitino comes out looking like a coach who did not coach a player to his natural abilties and held him back, because that is exactly what he did…and recruits know this. Don’t get me started on Siva’s development. You wanted to get it straight…there you go!

I'm interested in your thoughts on Siva's development...

by you tone, Pitino obviously made a fatal mistake there. Care to share/elaborate?

by Remote Cardinal on Oct 20, 2010 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Probably has to do with what Denny said on 790

How Pitino didn’t give him as much playing time and took him out of the game every single time he made a mistake. Coach Crum talked about who he would have had in the lineup
1 – Siva/Knowles
2 – Sosa
3 – Kuric/Swop
4 – Buckles
5 – TJ

by guyngreen on Oct 20, 2010 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

He didn't really mention the 5 as much

He also talked about the Woods kid… about how he’s a “freebie”: you have 1 1/2 years to give him a chance before he actually plays, so he’d rather go “too far” with a kid, giving him a chance instead of not going “far enough” by not giving him a chance.

Its because we don’t do 1-and-dones. Period. End of Story. Stop looking at them.

You can't blame them

Let’s see. You grow up impoverished, and when you hit 17 or 18 somebody waves big money in your face. How many of us would have been sorely tempted at that age, even if we came from better circumstances? It’s silly that the colleges that are making major bank from their talent can’t pay them to play. Set up some serious rules about it all and let’s get back to the damn sports.

by CardsFanTX on Oct 18, 2010 6:28 PM EDT reply actions

This is a noble proposal and probably the "right way" to go...

but if there exists any “level playing field” in the way of paying athletes, then boosters and agents will still exist to give a little more for their school’s players.

Additionally, what do you do in a situation like the Ivy League or (to a degree) the Patriot League? Do you force those schools to start giving scholarships AND stipend where they don’t even reward athletic scholarships now? What about schools from smaller conferences who are barely getting by as it is (an athlete salary would all but shut down many of the directional schools and satellite campuses).

And let’s not forget the big elephant in the room… Title IX. As soon as you start paying football and basketball players, you’re opening up women’s lacrosse, rowing, softball, and every other sport they can dream up for equal funding. You may think the NCAA could write a by-law to circumvent that, but I’ll be my Gloria Allred-hating ass that she would be cold and dead (well, colder and deader) before that happened.

I kind of agree with the original poster

If everyone else turns a blind eye to this $tuff, why are we the ones (supposedly) making the stand? I agree with the post above that says we’re getting slammed in the PR department but apparently making an ethical stand with regards to recruiting. It’s pointless.

And if it’s not Pitino’s thing to go after one and done players, or his system simply isn’t the right fit for that profile player, my question is two-fold:

a) why go after these kids? It’s not like it comes down to announcement day and CRP realizes he’s a “one and done” type player
b) if your system is best with 3rd and 4th year players as a nucleus and some young studs infused therein, you simply can’t strike out on multiple recruiting classes in a four year period

This isn’t calling for Pitino’s ouster (not yet), but once he’s done, I want either Thad Matta or Scott Drew.

YEAH!

If you are trying to do it the old fashion way, it kind of helps if you can get at least ONE decent recruit on campus and in school…huh?

and then when we get busted, try the “everybody else does it” defense.

all these comments

and no one except the OP mentions the fact that pitino just got caught porking a psychopathic stranger in a restaurant for 15 seconds while his obese and habitually-sweaty assistant listened in from the next booth??? and we’re surprised that 18 year old kids don’t want to come to UofL, ride the pine until they “buy in” while rick breaks them down mentally and physically, all while listening to his hypocritical bullshit about team values? i wouldn’t take orders in that situation either. the sypher thing is irrecoverable from a reputation perspective, and the spiral will only get worse until we get rid of Rick.
