Guard Stats from WVU Game

Just looked up the stats from the WVU game, a real heart breaker.  I love all of our player to no end, but the numbers SCREAM:  PLAY SIVA MORE!!!  I don't know the real formula to be used for figuring out player efficiency, but I guessed that this one would be a pretty good indicator:  Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Points - Turnovers / Playing Time = Efficiency.  None of them had a block, or I would have added that in before dividing by Playing Time.  I wasn't sure how to calculate in Personal Fouls, or I would have thrown that in as well.  PF are sort of arbitrary because sometimes they are better than just letting someone take a perfect open shot, while other times they are Jerry pushing a Wanamaker with 1.7 seconds left when we're already up 2 points.  I figure the points stat calculates in the FTs well enough.

On side note, Sosa still has a sick 3.  Him in another position just trying to get open for that or the occasional lay up would likely be better for him as a player, the team, and us, as fans.

VIVA SIVA!  GO CARDS!  BEAT UCONN!

Rebounds Assists Steals Points Turnovers (Subtract) Time (Divide) Efficiency
Sosa 1 6 0 6 3 22 0.45
Siva 4 1 2 14 3 15 1.2
Knowles 2 4 1 6 1 20 0.6
Smith 4 0 1 6 1 15 0.67

We still need to pay them back for this one:

Here's a glaring flaw in your logic:

Sosa: 6 assists, 3 turnovers, 2.00 assist to turnover ratio.
Siva: 1 assist, 3 turnovers, 0.33 assist to turnover ratio.

Don’t let Siva’s good shooting today cloud your judgement. While Siva looks much more natural on the court at the 1 than Sosa, and is certainly flashier, he just doesn’t have the experience yet, and he makes a lot of freshmen mistakes when he gets rushed. I don’t know that we want to see what he tries to do late in a close game, because it wouldn’t necessarily be good. He will one day be a better point guard than Sosa, but I don’t think that today is that day.

But hey, I guess you know better than Pitino, what with all your D1 head coaching experience. His hall of fame resume and championship ring probably agree with you, if that makes you feel better.

agree

Sosa is the leader, let it be. Siva is still playling like a freshman on D and as Pitino mentioned, Sosa can’t play the 2 very well b/c of his own defensive lackings. If we’re going to make noise in the BE Tourney at MSG, it’ll have to be Good Edgar leading us.

Assist to turnover ratio

is only one factor to consider.

It is obvious that you are giving more weight to assists, so let’s say (liberally) that each assist lead to 2.5 points (multiple by turnovers) (a 2 or 3 each time).

You are also giving more weight to turnovers, so lets say (very liberally) that each turnover leads to 2.5 points (multiple by turnovers) on the other team (a 2 or 3 each time).

However, if you do this you also would need to assume that every rebound and steal leads to the same…. but I won’t go into that because I don’t need to to prove my point. Even construing the numbers that much in Sosa’s advantage, his efficiency still comes out to be lower, Sosa: .66, Siva .90.

God Bless Rick Pitino. His methods make sense, play the senior, he should be better. I’m sure it works out 99 out of 100 times. But, numbers don’t lie.

Sosa should continue to start. Why not? He’s earned it after 4 years. Starting is not everything. At this point they should at least be splitting minutes down the middle. Especially with the numbers where they are. Maybe the threat of losing playing time will bring Good Edgar back and we can drop this debate.

Sorry

Multiply assists by 2.5 before the calc is what I meant to write. Not (multiple by turnovers) on that second point, and I don’t know why I was spelling multiply as multiple….

Let's remember

that we’re all rooting for the same team and void personal attacks on each other, k?

Wow Card_G6...

…are you related to Edgar Sosa. Your response dripped with sarcasm and condescention. Not sure where that came from as RealisticCardsFan was simply crunching numbers to come up with a possible justification for playing Siva more. No where did I read that he thought he was better than Pitino. I personally think Edgar is also very erratic and unpredicable. Just because he is a senior does not mean he will make better decisions than a freshman at crunch time.

Naw, He's just a very passionate Card fan.

These stressful times seem to bring out the angry side of fans. I know I feel like chomping the head off of anyone who disagrees with me.

How dare you.

I apologize for attacking you before; it wasn’t my intent. As I said in another thread, it was late and I was pissed. No excuse, but I’m really getting tired of these posts, where forum posters try to backseat coach.

But I am NOT a UK fan, and to insinuate as much shows how little you pay attention to not only this comment, but any of my previous comments.

Your posts are

hostile. I was only joking about the UK fan thing, but that is a really low blow, so I’m sorry.

he can be a hostile fan

and not be a UK fan..lol Trust me-G6 and I have had our disagreements as well, but he is a Card fan through and through.

apparently we need both of them quite a bit

I like Siva’s play better, and I think despite his inexperience his upside is higher and his downside is nowhere near as low as Bad Sosa’s. But Sosa is still an asset and they way those two boys like to foul there are more than enough minutes for both of them. You might recall being gripped with fear when they both were riding pine and Knowles and jerry were leading the charge. I mean, until Knowles and Smith somehow managed to extend our lead while the S’s were benchbound. No need to dicker over the matter – they both need PT. What this team really needs to to catch a freaking break. Probably this string of bad officiating in games wouldn’t seem so outrageous if we were getting our share of those bad calls as God intended. But lately it seems, especially in crunch time, that we’ve been on the shit end of 100% of those calls. The optimist in me says: This is OK, plenty of season left for the basketball gods to balance the ledger. The less optimistic part of me thinks we’re making up for some bad karma somewhere along the line.

Siva vs. Sosa

Lets just look at the scoreboard. This isn’t a scientific formula, Sosa starts the game UofL gets down by 13. Siva enters and the two trade off time all throgh the middle of the game but UofL gets lead. UofL is up not sure of the margin but with around 5:00 left Siva is replaced by Sosa and UofL ends up losing the game. The offense looked lost in that last 5 minutes regardless of the zone. Sosa is predictable with the ball in his hands, Siva can do more, tries to probe defenses and pass to different positions. I think the NBA has some kind of formula that shows the productivity of the minutes a player spends on the court, and the teams total points scored vs. the oppositions points scored. Sosa was around a -20 I bet, Siva a +20. This isn’t a comparison of two PF’s this is a comparison of the PG the person who gets the teams offense going. Sosa’s stats seem pretty good, but the team didn’t flow and score as much with him in the game. Siva made some turnovers but the offense just seemed to click better.
