OK, Samuels had a bad game against Kentucky. And as usual, every time he made a mistake, the CC open thread fairly rang with comments of "Please, Coach, take Samardo out and never play him again."
Need I remind you that Samardo leads the team in points (15.9 per game) and rebounds (7.7)?
If you think Jennings is the better player, compare their numbers. Samardo has 222 points in 357 minutes, an average of 24.9 per 40 minutes played. Terrence has 82 points in 176 minutes for a 40-minute average of 18.6. Samuels has 108 rebounds (53 offensive) for an average of 12.1 (5.9) per 40 minutes played, compared to Jennings' 49 (25) for a 40-minute average of 11.1 (5.6).
Per 40 minutes:
- Pts: 24.9 vs 18.6 (Samardo +6.3)
- Reb/off: 12.1/5.9 vs. 11.1/5.6 (Samardo +1.0/+0.3)
- TO: 2.8 vs. 2.5 (Terrence -0.3)
- PF: 3.9 vs. 4.7 (Samardo -0.8)
- A: 1.8 vs. 0.9 (Samardo +0.9)
- Blk: 1.5 vs. 3.2 (Terrence +1.7)
- Stl: 0.9 vs. 1.4 (Terrence +0.5)
It seems pretty clear to me that overall, Samuels does more good stuff and less bad stuff than Jennings. I'll take 6.3 points, a rebound, an assist, and one less foul over a block and a half and half an assist any day, and eat a third of a turnover.
Not shown n the stats is how many times our players get fouled, but the fact that SamSam has over four times as many free throw attempts in less than twice as much playing time is a pretty good indiction that he draws more fouls on the opposition than TJ does.
None of this is meant as a knock on Jennings. I just wish people would cut Samuels some slack. He's a better player than many give him credit for.
