We are Louisville football. Let’s think about what that means historically over the last 100 years. We’ve experienced a lot worse than what has happened in the last two years. Since the Schnellenberger came back home in '84 we have slowly (again slowly) built this program from a doormat to a perennial (mid-level) bowl team. The John L. years were fun and Petrino carried on that original mission of ‘a collision course with the national championship’. We won the Orange Bowl in 2006 the best year in the history of the program.
But in football-as in everything else-things ebb and flow. We need to get some perspective on how short a span of time we’ve had success, our history and tradition in football, and then really think about having a winning season with a bowl bid every year. It’s not realistic for us and it’s not realistic for even the most storied programs (Michigan and Notre Dame anyone?) I have continued to be a Coach Kragthorpe supporter through the first two years even as he has perplexed me at times with his play calling and lack of synchronicity with his players. But things take time and we can’t be short sighted on this. Otherwise we will have a revolving door of coaches like some bottom of the barrel NBA team and we don’t want that mentality in college sports.
I see good things and if 7-5 or 6-6 is it this year-so be it. If those example records irk you I would advise you go do a Wikipedia search our record and bowl bid history. Then do the same for the likes of Notre Dame, Michigan, or hell even Army and then think about it a bit. I mean really think about it. Let’s remember and celebrate our recent past successes, but not fester on them. Let’s get behind this team and (maybe begrudgingly) support our coach as long as he’s here. Let Jurich make that coaching call. And if you don’t think Tom is watching very, very closely you are not paying attention and really don’t get what he’s done for the ENTIRE athletic program over the last decade (do a wiki search on that too). Remember we used to be just a basketball school.
