Counterpoint

I don't  want to be 'that guy' but I have no idea what happened in the Kentucky game that made everyone think that our football team is anything besides not very good. I don't understand how losing to Kentucky has made everyone think this team is going to win more than 5 games. I love Guy, Long, Victor, Johnny Patrick and Burke as much as the next guy, and besides them, the rest of our team isn't great. Sidenote: I had Vic, Long, Guy, then I re-read it. No one would call Kentucky an offensive machine, and they carved up the defense. They put up 346 yards of offense, and held the ball for 27:28. And they had the ball 4 plays for 1:26 the whole 3rd quarter. UK ran for 168 at 5 yards a pop. In what was one of the back breaking plays of the game, UK's fullback breaks a 23 yard run on 4th &1. Hartline didn't have a huge game yard wise, but he picked the d apart. Outside of the nice pick by Patrick and the fumble by Hartline, the d didn't stop them. There were positives.  I really like Burke, but he is not very accurate. He didn't make any mistakes I can think of outside the time control of the last minute, and I thought he was really good. I have no idea why Krag is splitting touches between Vic and Bilal Powell so much. Call me an idiot, but I think Vic is much better than Powell and should get at least 20-25 touches a game. Long, Beaumont and Guy, alongside Cam Graham make a nice receiving corp. The offensive line is a spotty at times. Like whenever Powell ran the ball. If this team is going to win, the offense is going to have to carry the show. I have absolutely zero faith in the defense. Utah was not impressive against Oregon, but it's not going to to be easy going in there. We are going to get a healthy dose of Cain and Asiata in the spread, and it's going to be tough, as evidenced by the fact we are 13 point dogs. Looking further down the schedule after Saturday night, Pittsburgh is a huge game. I have no idea if the Wannstaches are any good, but they have put up points, and they beat Navy who seems good. Southern Miss is another tough one. Fletcher seems pretty legit. I'm looking forward to this game because I hate me some Southern Miss. That's followed by @UConn and @Cincinnati which don't look promising. I'm not posting this to quell optimism, or to say that you are wrong for thinking our team is good, but I just don't think this team has it. I think most are being a little too over emotional after a tough defeat where our guys played as hard as they could. I don't think the reaction would be the same if that game was against Syracuse or Arkansas State. Ok, I feel better for getting that out of my system. Waiting for someone to call me a Cat fan in 3..2..1...

Cat fan...

Sorry, I’m just joking. I don’t necessarily disagree with your post. While I’m not quite ready to annoint this team bowl-bound, I do think they should vast improvement over week one. IF they can play the rest of this season with the same fire they played with against UK, they’ll be more successful than I, for one, originally gave them credit for.

GO CARDS!!!

Make that “showed vast improvement.”

I respect your post, but I think you're misunderstanding what we're actually saying.

I, for one, am not suggesting that we will have a shot at winning the Big East or eve getting more than 6 wins. I’m just looking at this like after the ISU game, I was positive we would go 1-11 with several blowouts. After the UK game, I just feel like we can eat least compete, and possibly even put up a few wins. How well the D holds up is still a major factor, but I’m certainly not insinuating that this team will be any better than mediocre; just that they’ll be better than the very poor week 1 seemed to suggest.

exactly

After the ISU game, the only way i would’ve been convinced this team wins more than 2 or 3 games is if I saw the passion and improved playcalling that I saw on Saturday. But its not as though I thought it was coming or thought about it before the UK game. I was resolved to a 3-win season and the hopeful exciting coaching change. After I watched the postgame press conferences and mulled over the game I realized that this team had surprised me. And if they can surprise me again the next couple games, it’s going to be an enjoyable season—even if they win 6 games or less—b/c they give a shit.

Agree with everything said here

Also, just wanted to state that Pitt is pretty good. i live in Pittsburgh and been to the two home games they’ve had so far, and they look solid. Tough against the run, a little weak against the pass on defense. Running is still their strong point on offense. They have a little Vic anderson clone that might end up being BE Freshman of the year named Lewis. ANd they can definitely put up points against people. Not sure how they arent ranked in the top 25 yet, especially with a win on the home field of the defending mac champion (not exactly going to a huge bcs school and knocking off a ranked team, but still a very solid win), and beating navy badly.

I still see us winning 4-5 games, maybe 6 if we get lucky or improve as much over the next couple weeks as we did over the last couple weeks.

I agree

I agree with 2 things – 1st: Paragraphs would have made reading this post much easier…
2nd: As an observer (and UL fan/Alum) not in Louisville, it appears there is some “irrational exxuberance” in many posts.

I believe that, by definition, fans tend to see their world through a skewed perspective. Often that perspective is tinted by hope and emotion. I believe much of what I am reading after the UK game is full of hope, but light in objective views.

I also long for the success and the rush of UL football in the Petrino era. I support the Cards, no matter what. However, I do not see the indications from this team nor its coach that a multi-win season is guaranteed.

Go Cards!

Please help me understand

If anyone thinks this year’s team is going to win 4 or 5 more games I just do not see it. Please list the teams you think we will beat,

ark st, so miss, pitt, so florida, uconn, syracuse

all feasible wins…perhaps you’ll say Pitt isn’t feasible and I would understand. But I like our chances against them at home.

Wow

Ark St is the only team on this list that we will beat.

Syracuse should be a W, but the way they are playing compared to the way we are playing, makes me think this is not going to happen.

We end the year 2-10. The good news is, Krags will be history.

re : powell

he’s a step slow from the get-go. can’t get to the hole before it closes and is much too slow for sweeps. might be a nice div 1a player.
