Cards/Cats rivalry: sir, we've gone plaid
So Pat Forde again tries to bring some national focus to the Cards/Cats rivalry (ahem, basketball). He rates this as the #1 current rivalry in the nation (more so than the Tobacco Road teams) mainly due to the increased fanaticism following Calipari's arrival.
1. Kentucky-Louisville
Why It's Hot Now: It's always hot, but the temperature shot up to nuclear-fusion levels when John Calipari was hired in Lexington. Suddenly, Rick Pitino has a rival with a comparably outsized personality and competitive nature. And for the first time in a long time, there is a genuine and mutual antipathy between the coaches, no matter what they say publicly. Meanwhile, a not-insignificant percentage of Kentucky fans seem to have reneged on their mellowing over Pitino's switch from blue to red after his moving eulogy to late UK equipment manager Bill Keightley last year. With Pitino's alleged extortionist heading to trial later this summer, they're salivating over the chance that their ex-coach's name will be dragged through the mud. On the other side, Louisville fans were gleeful over the May revelation of alleged NCAA violations on Calipari's watch at Memphis. Schadenfreude has long been the prevailing state emotion when it comes to this rivalry, but never more than now.
Upper Hand Today: Louisville has won two straight in the rivalry and had better NCAA tournament showings of late. In fact, there was no NCAA showing last March for Kentucky, a first since 1991. But the Wildcats look stronger for the coming season than the Cardinals.
Upper Hand Historically: Kentucky leads the all-time series 26-14. Pitino is 6-2 coaching the Cats against the Cards, 4-4 coaching the Cards against the Cats.

Crap, I can't edit that
I meant Football. Easy joke, I know. But I had to get that “suck to blow” line in play before any of the other Cards fans read Mike’s post.

Never. I'll never turn to the Dark Side.
I am a Wildcat, like my father before me.
(Oops, that’s not a Spaceballs quote. My bad.)
The 2008 UK v. UL basketball game was a little rough but last year’s game was pretty good on both sides of the floor. It won’t be long before we take another W. Besides, we can’t win all the time; then you guys would want to stop playing! ;)
My friends at KSR might be a little less civilized, I’ll admit. But you know I respect this place (and you guys) enough not to act like an asshat.

I love the ul/yuk rivalry but imo it’s not even on the same level as unc/duke.They play three times a year, are in the same conference and those games they play uaually decide the regular season and conference championships. It’s not even close.,,,,,,,And to say the wildcats look stronger than the cardinals for the upcoming season is off too. They have a roster full of freshmen and if only 2 or 3 of those freshmen struggle as freshmen tend to do then ul is the better team.Plus they have no 3 point shooters and against our zone i think we still win the game, even in rupp.

How good will UL be w/o Andre, Earl and T-Will? Is that not as equally strong a question as how good will UK be with P.Patterson and so many young players playing big roles?…For the season, I’d give the slight edge to UK (Patterson and weaker schedule). Calipari’s taken phenom freshman and upperclassmen and made it work before so I’ll be interested to see how he manages UK this year.
As of right now before any games are played, UL’s experience and defense give the Cards the slight advantage in a heads up game vs. UK but I still think UK’s schedule gives the Cats the time/cushion they need to develop as a team. Much like Cal did at Memphis in the C-USA. Should be a great season and the rivalry game will be hard to match the inevitable hype surrounding it.
Go Cards.

See, I’ve never bought that argument that the UNC/ Duke rivalry is on a different level because “They play three times a year, are in the same conference and those games they play uaually decide the regular season and conference championships”… for starters, I lived in North Carolina the past four years and I wouldn’t label their fans’ passion as any more intense than ours. Let’s give ourselves some credit— our state is home to some of the most irrational people on the planet, and more often than not their energy is channeled into basketball (if any of you guys are familiar with the work of “oh napier,” at one point he posted a music video to his site that included the lyrics “and I’m spankin’ tubby’s ass for every game he lost,” and not to point Crazy Fingers; we can all agree that louisville fans are batshit nuts about basketball too— how many college crowds would let out a huge collective cheer when their team was on DEFENSE, when preston beat his man around a screen in a huge game last season?). Not saying that people in North Carolina don’t care, because good lord, they do, but I would by no means put their passion on a different level from ours.
Secondly, the very fact that they play so often I think could actually dilute things somewhat. They do play more often than we do, and familiarity and repetition are key ingredients to a healthy rivalry. But when you play three times a year, the impact of each individual game is lessened somewhat— if you’re Duke, you can say, oh well, they got us that time, but we’ll get ‘em on the next go-’round, and vice versa. That doesn’t work for us. Our rivalry is built on the very thing that makes college basketball’s playoff so unique and captivating— it’s a one game, winner-take-all slugfest, and I think in some ways that makes it a lot more special. U of L and UK aren’t constantly being measured against the same competition, they aren’t constantly being compared, so when they meet it’s a huge event, kind of like how huge the World Series used to be before all of this Damned Inter-league Business. And this one game gives bragging rights for an entire calendar year— yeah, the fact that Conference Titles and Whatever are at stake means something for Duke and UNC, but strictly from fans’ Rivalry-We-Beat-You-We’re-Better-Than-You-So-You-Guys-Can-Suck-It-For-A-Year standpoint (the passionate fans’ part in any rivalry that in my opinion, cannot be understated) the titles don’t mean a hell of a lot. It’s who beats who. I suppose this falls apart when National Titles are thrown in, but the last time UK won the title, I do believe a certain team from a certain Falls City beat them earlier in the year.

agree
I also agree that b/c it’s only played once a year, the UK v. UL rivalry is a little more important and worthy of more hype. Not that its better than Duke/UNC every year but that this is an advantage, in my opinion. It’s like the difference between game 1 of a best of 5 NBA series versus an Elite Eight matchup in the NCAA Tournament.

Yea,but my take was,and still is,that the writer was saying uk will have the upper hand in the series this year and not who will be better at the end of the year,

ahh yes you're right
Forde does say the Wildcats “look stronger” coming into the season. I’m not sure how you can prove UK looks stronger in this instance given the recent performances, experienced personnel, and coaching changes involved—this isn’t like saying UNC is looking stronger than Davidson this season…
If forced to pick the stronger team w/o any bias or weighing strength of schedule, I would think one would lean towards the more experienced team with the coach who has been here for more than a Summer over a program that will be juggling several freshman and a new coach. Seems more probable.
But then again, the sports industry is arguably fixated upon upside potential over proven experience and a school’s tradition over what have you done for me lately, so it comes as no suprise. And I do think if UK can recreate what Cal did at Memphis the last few years, they’ll have an easier path to success than UL. Several Top 30 teams in the Big East could feasibly fall into a string of losses like Notre Dame last year whereas that’s hard to see in the SEC. That’s why I can see where a journalist would give UK a slight advantage over UL in terms of ranking and records at the end of the season. But stronger coming into the season? I can’t agree, Mr. Forde. Though I do wonder what effect the extortion case will have upon the team.

I still think ul has the advantage over uk that early in the season, with edgar, jerry, preston, delk, samardo, and terrence we have alot of experienced players who have played in alot of big games before and should be ready to go from opening tip.

Of course, this is a pretty screwy list...
… when SU/Georgetown and SU/UConn aren’t on it, MSU-Purdue (Huh?) and Michigan-Purdue are (double huh?), and such memorable pairings as Cleveland State-Butler and Rutgers-Seton Hall are in the Honorable Mentions.
