Can the Women redeem the Men?
With our women's team reaching new heights under the direction of Jeff Walz and the sheer will of Angel, how does everyone feel about it?
Last year when the baseball team went to the World Series we all went nuts supporting them. But with the run that the women are making I just don't think that the rank and file Cardinal contingent is showing the appropriate enthusiasm
So here is my question: Can the Women upsetting UConn and winning a National Title make up for the Men failing to make the Final Four to you?
My answer is that as much as I'd like to say yes, in truth it won't. I'm not saying that I'm not excited to watch the game tommorow night, nor am I saying that ther achievements would be any less than Griff's or Pervis' Championships...It's just not the same.
What do you think?

Great Post
I’m sure cardinal fans everything have been wondering the same thing. I will say this, no matter what happens tomorrow the ladies success has eased the pain i’ve felt from the men. Last night i was actually able to watch sportcenter for the first time in a week. If they were to win… well we’ll just have to wait and see.
The ladies have overachieved GREATLY...no matter what happens Tues
The men had a great, fun season but will be viewed as underachievers historically—although if MSU beats NC then I think we all have to do a revisionist take on the Card-MSU game
would a women’s nat’l champ be as good as a men’s Final 4 —to me? -
no
They have a 5% chance of winning, but it is exciting nonetheless
As long as Walz stays at UofL, in a few years, this will be the new powerhouse to sit up there at the top with Uconn,Tenn, etc.

Go Cards...
ALL Cards. I didn’t even know the women had a decent team till they started raising a ruckus in the Big East Tournament. I am now a FAN! Go Angel… (who wears the same number I wore in high school… you’re quite welcome Angel!)
I only hop the women can hold on to Walz. This guy can coach!

Women's basketball
sucks….even “pros” play like high school girls sometimes..ughhhhh
It wont redeem the men for me
but it is exciting to see a Cardinal team continue to achieve greatness, and I will watch and cheer for them.
GO CARDS
two different things to me...
I love that the women are having great success. I hope they win tonight (as unlikely as that is).
But, there is no way to equate a womens championship in hoops with the mens. Now, don’t get me wrong, a UL win tonight would be one of the great basketball upsets ever. It’s just not the same though and the attention it (the womens tourney) compared to the men’s proves that.
It would still be a great accomplishment, but in no way would it make me feel better about the men not getting to the final four. Freddy
Hey Dr Hustle
Nice post, man.
I don’t think there’s anything to redeem. We had a great, great, year. As we’ve discussed so many times, there are land mines out there and no matter how good you are, there’s a chance, a good chance, you’re gonna get caught. The ’86 team was, in my humble opinion, no match for the ’83 team. The former won, the latter lost in the semis…if Houston had drawn NC State in the semis instead of the finals….oh well, you get the picture.
But great for the run the girls have had. You know, when Angel said “we didn’t have any McDonalds All-Americans on this team,” it made me think that in a way, the girls are playing more for the “U” than the boys are, who seem to be playing exclusively for themselves.
Have a great night,
Roz
I agree with Roz....
our Men’s team doesn’t need redeeming after the wonderful season we had……good luck to the Ladies!
I think i agree with you two
Using the word “redeem” may not describe exactly what I was trying to say, but it did make for a good enough headline for Mike to bump it up to the front for the whole world to see.
I guess I was basically asking if the women’s truimphs takes the sting away from seeing such a great men’s squad fall short of their goals and our hopes.
The womens game is paiful to watch
With no 10 second rule and the game played below the rim, it’s about like watching elementary school boys. As happy as I am for the ladies program, this does zero to take away the pain of the awful second half vs msu.

Women's basketball is just plain dull
Look at it this way: I dont like NASCAR but I respect the skill of someone who can drive a car at incredible speeds. However, if the cars only went 90mph, I would not be impressed.
That’s why I hate hearing Pat Summit compared to men’s bball coaches. the men move waaay faster.
The Ladies are having such
a great season that it’s almost fitting that they be the only game in town. I’ll be ready to cheer for the hometown team. Teams like this, because they are not the men bring the whole community together. UK fans are even interested in this game. I think it’s great for Angel and Candyce to get their true due and not have to share it with the men.
With that being said… I’m not over the men losing to MSU. But this helps some. Like someone said in an earlier post. I can watch SportsCenter again without being totally depressed. I need to get a life.

Important distinctions
I think Cardinal fans are definitely excited and have shown plenty of enthusiastic support for the ladies,. But the comparison to the college world series team is a valid one. The only response I have is that the success (and eventual failure) of the men’s team was dominating so much of our attention that it drained some off the women’s team. Not only that, but the men’s team was SO fun to watch. Sure, men’s basketball is better than women’s in general but the men’s Louisville team was a far better variety of spectator support than most other men’s teams. The only teams I liked watching as much as our men’s team were North Carolina (as professional a team as college basketball has seen in my viewing lifetime), Missouri (similar style + smaller players + underdog status) and Kentucky (schaudenfreude makes everything more fun). So even watching a perfect game by the women was a letdown compared to what we were seeing on other nights. The baseball team had nothing of the sort to compete against. Under these conditions, I’ve been surprised that the girls received as much attention as they did early in the season, before a national championship was anywhere near a possibility.
