Around SBN: The Worst Team Ever Projected?

Who's your starting five

If we're going to start the convo on next season we should just go ahead and start with the lienup.  We have a pleathora of option at multiple positions and that creates many different possible looks for this squad.

How do you see the depth chart shaping up

Here's my guess

PG - Sosa (C) - Siva

SG - Jerry (C) - Preston - Marra

SF - Delk - Swopshire - Kuric

PF -  Samardo - Buckles

C - Jennings - Goode - Van Treese

Notes:

Siva is an absolute stud (360 layup?) and will be the true engine for this machine eventually.  I see his season arcing like Kemba Walker's this year - solid early spectacular late.  He's the pass first PG with dazzling skills and control of the game that we need.  After watching the McD game tonight he really is the only of his kind in his class.  If he has any kind of outside shot or midrange game there is no way Pitino will be able to keep him off the court

I also think that Buckles is the true X-factor for this team.  He's going to have to be our junkyard dog if we're going to survive the BEast next year.

Finally I think the season comes down to whether Samardo can make "the jump"  next year.  Can he hit the 12 footer consistently.  Can he learn a second (or even a third) post move. Can he become a better passer from the high post. Can we count on him for a hoop in crunch time.  TJ also has a chance to to the same and may even be a faster learner than Samardo.

the big question for me is...

(stealing from pitino) can samardo move his feet fast enough to defend opposing PFs?

by sabeasey on Apr 2, 2009 8:48 AM EDT reply actions

No, he can't

TJ at the PF and SS at the Center pos. Sam Sam need to learn how to rebound. He needs to be a double double guy every night for us to survive the Big East. 13 strong next year. With some good leadership this could be a better team than the last two. It will be interesting to see where we fall in the Pre Season Polls.

Dan

Can’t imagine how “good leadership” could make next years team better than the previous two.
We won everything in the Big East this year. We made it to the Eight both years. I think only Carolina can say that.
We had two great years. Enviable.
We are losing two NBA players.

Next year’s pre-season polls: Big East – Mid Pack, maybe slightly higher
National Top 25 – Nowhere to be seen.

Hope you’re right, I’m wrong.

by Roz on Apr 2, 2009 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

we will be ranked top 25 preseason..

Id say 10-15 range..

I also think that SS can work on quickness..

I think PF is a great position for him-look at how comfortable he was away from the basket. When he caught the ball deep under the basket is where he got in trouble. He was almost the opposite of Earl, who was terrible most of the time far from the basket.

We have returning and incoming talent next year fellas…the days of being down are over with

by twistedwedge on Apr 2, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I think HIGHER....

even with our stumble in the EE, with all we did this year (even though we’ll lose TWill and Dre) I think we’ll be preseason Top 10 @ 6th-7th maybe.

by Linda on Apr 2, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't see 4

teams ahead of us in the BE next year. Our press will be good enough for a top four finish in the BE. I think 10-15 ranking would be about right. Other Big East teams are losing players too. I don’t think Twill and Earl will be that difficult to replace from a Defense standpoint. Maybe rebounding could be a problem for this team but the press can hide a lot of problems. We’ll have a better offense team next year with traditional point guard play. Either Sosa or Siva will be able to get the job done. I think we’ll be just fine. We may not have a better regular season than this year but our ceiling will be higher. Too much depth, talent and the Best Coach in the Nation.

I would only make a few changes.

First… Goode. Yes, he played the 5 this season. But he’s technically listed as a small forward, and he was known for his exceptional jumpshot for a big man in high school. He will probably play the 4 more than the 5 this year. Same for van Treese.

SS will be at the 5 with Jennings. Buckles is a bit of an x-factor. He’s almost like another Earl Clark in that he’s big enough and powerful enough to play the 4 but quick enough to play the 3. He’ll likely be at the 4.

But honestly, I would not be surprised to see van Treese or Samuels playing either the 4 or 5, nor would I be surprised to see Buckles at the 3 and Swop at the 4. There’s so much flexibility with this team outside of the guards that it’s really anybody’s guess. Besides the guards, the only locks I see are Delk and Kuric at the 3 and Jennings at the 5.

Frankly

I don’t want to see Swop on the court ever unless he makes the most drastic turnaround ever

by sam34gtr on Apr 2, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

You've been in his corner from the start

Lots of hours in the gym…he’ll fill out naturally as he gets older…and if he stays four years, who knows? He’s easy to like, good looking, good attitude, good hustle. For now, though, he is often “lost” out there…driftin’ down a river, looking for something/anything to hang on to.

I thought for sure

he was going to be the second coming of an almost Fransisco Garcia..

We just need to give him time

We need to remember that he only just finished his freshman season. We have come so used to guys coming in and dominating from the start and leaving after one year. We have forgotten about the guys who are late bloomers and take a few years to mature all the way. Some people may have too high expectations right now. All he needs one more year of seasoning from Pitino and he will be the player everyone wants. I’m not saying he won’t be good next year, but I feel that he is still one year away.

Yeah anothermissed3byE5 and Twist

…This guy is still a boy…maybe you know somebody, maybe even yourself, who is “young for their age.”
And when you contrast Swop against the look of some of the freshman beasts, the man-child types, who are “one and out,” the contrast is stark.
Maybe he’ll be The Shocker. That oh so pleasant surprise…the guy who stays four years, and just keeps getting better, learns to know the game, and leaves here as a cerebral player with some nice skills.
I’ll be rooting for him.

He reminds me of Tayshawn Prince.

That guy was tall & lanky…. but holy crap, time has done him well.

by Zandaar on Apr 3, 2009 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Here's my take

G- Sosa/Siva
G- Smith/Knowles/Delk/Marra
G/F – Delk/Kuric/Swopshire
F- Samuels/Goode/Buckles/Swopshire/Van Treese
C- Jennings/Goode/Van Treese

Starters listed first, subs second. I think one certainty is that Pitino will substitute liberally early on in order to determine the right rotation and best mix of players. Practice will still determine who gets on the floor for games.

And just because I have a guy listed third doesn’t mean I don’t think they’ll play, especially as younger players emerge during the season. I don’t expect anyone to play the 35-40 minutes that T-Will and Earl did this year.

I don’t think Samuels will have any trouble playing the 4 on offense. He’s a much better player facing the basket. He’ll encounter more matchups where he has the size advantage at that spot, as opposed to playing center where he was frequently against guys his size or bigger. His outside shot is solid, there’s no doubt in my mind about that. He can also put the ball on the floor and take it to the rim. He’s just not an explosive leaper when playing on the block. TJ will be a more effective center against taller players.

Scout or Rivals

Or try a google search should give you some pretty recent results from this past season. And don’t forget all 4 recruits will be playing in the Derby Festival All-Star game if you want to check them out in person. Not that All-Star games give you a real idea or anything.

by Hari Seldon on Apr 2, 2009 1:29 PM EDT reply actions

This is more fun than I thought it would be a few nights ago

This fan sees every single position as officially open for competition. Look for numerous lineup changes game to game in the pre-BE season and for freshmen to get starts early and often based on tenacity in practice & on D.

Unfortunately I think Swop will get a lot of playing time b/c he’s apparently a practice phenom and in Rick’s coziest horse stable (what’s the antonym for dog house?)

ATTN: FRESHMEN
If you can play agressive D you will get your 10 minutes a game…hey…are you writing this down?

by UL is my hot hot sex on Apr 2, 2009 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

Samuels will have to inhabit somebody else's body if he's ever to play the 4.

The leadened feet won’t allow it. The lack of side-to-side mobility won’t allow it. Quickness can be improved slightly with additional strength, but a slow player never, ever becomes a quick player. Samardo can run the floor, but he is the slowest player off his feet I’ve seen in recent years. And he has the hands of Ewve Blab. “There’s a pass to the pivot…IT’S COMPLETE!”

I Think You've Got It

…and that body inhabiting thing can be tricky.

by Roz on Apr 2, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

this is a very difficult question

Let’s start with a roster breakdown. Here’s who’s (presumably) coming back:

Preston Knowles – SG
Edgar Sosa – PG
Chris Brickley – SG
Reginald Delk – SG/SF
Kyle Kuric – SG/SF
Jared Swopshire – SF/PF
George Goode – PF
Terrence Jennings – PF/C
Samardo Samuels – PF/C
Lee Steiden – SG
Jerry Smith – SG

Here are the newcomers:

Peyton Siva – PG
Mike Marra – SG
Stephan Van Treese – PF
Rakeem Buckles – SF/PF

So what do we have?

First, a lot of guards. Our talent at guard next year should be incredible: Sosa, Siva, Smith, and Knowles will be the core, but Kuric, Delk, and even Marra should definitely see some minutes, especially early in the season.

Second, we have plenty of big men. Samardo and Jennings make for a "thunder and lightning" combo that should be unmatched in college basketball. George Goode is back. Buckles and Van Treese should develop throughout the season. But the best news of all is that everyone will be able to play their natural position next year, which didn’t happen this year because of one tiny problem: Terrence Jennings’ toe. Remember this? Early in the season, TJ had a bad case of turf toe, and couldn’t practice or play for nearly a month. Not that big of deal, since Samardo was clearly the starter, but the question became, who is the backup at the 5 spot? George Goode, a natural 4 (with the jumper to prove it), had to take the role. Which meant that Swop (a natural 3) had to rotate over and play backup at the 4 (which he clearly didn’t have the physical gifts to do). When Jennings came back, he edged Goode out for the backup role at the 5 spot, but the lineup had gelled too much for coach to change everyone back to where they should be. Next year, I think everyone gets to rotate back to their more natural positions, which means Swop at the 3 and Goode at the 4.

What don’t we have?

The biggest missing ingredient is clearly a 3 (SF), which is aggravated by the fact that our best departing player was our three. The 3 has always been the linchpin in Rick’s offense at Louisville (think Gaines, Garcia, and T-Will), and not having a reliable three at the outset next year means Rick will probably have to reinvent the offense (more on that in a second). The obvious candidates to start at the three are Swop, Delk, and Rakeem Buckles. I can’t imagine Swop getting the role (he doesn’t have the ability to create off the dribble like a true 3), and I still think Delk is undersized (keep in mind the three is a position from which we need a lot of rebounds). My vote would go to Buckles who seems to have a T-Will-like game based on ESPN’s capsule:

"Buckles also plays more like a small forward than a power forward. He scores in transition by sprinting the floor and beating the defense to the rim. He has good not great bounce but what makes him a high major player is his ability to make plays of the dribble. Buckles can get his own shot at will. He has all the dribble moves in his package. Buckles will show the crossover both ways, spin along and between the legs where he does a great job of raising up the defender before he explodes by him to the rim or into a pull up jumper in the lane. When he drives left he loves the step back jumper where he creates space in order to get the shot off. He can also pick and pop to the arc but needs time and space to get off the three where he is streaky at best due to a low release and little to no elevation. Buckles can rebound on both ends but must make it a priority to get to the glass on a regular basis and look to post when he has a size or quickness advantage."

It might be a stretch, but it seems like we might have to rely on Buckles at the three, with Swop as the logical backup. Here’s what we have so far:

1) ?
2) ?
3) Buckles / Swop
4) ?
5) ?

At the guards, we will be deep and talented. Given the lack of a three (as discussed above) and our depth at guard, my guess is that Rick will redesign the offense so that it flows through out guards. There’s a chance that we’d even get to see a 3 guard lineup, with Siva, Sosa, Smith, Knowles, Delk, et al. rotating in and out of spots 1 through three, and Samardo, TJ, Buckles, Goode, and Van Treese rotating in and out at 4 and 5. However, Rick’s never done anything like that before, so assuming the positioning stays roughly the same, I’m going to go with experience and say the starting spots are Sosa and Smith’s to lose. I know Siva’s supposedly the real deal, but I’ve become very wary of believing in freshman under Rick’s system (unless, of course, they’re the only option at a position, like Samardo this year or Buckles next). I think Siva will need time to adapt to the system, and to the college game; by the end of the season he may well be starting, but even if he isn’t, the backup guards will be seeing plenty of minutes, because they’re just too good to keep off the court. So:

1) Sosa / Siva
2) Jerry / Knowles / Delk
3) Buckles / Swop
4) ?
5) ?

For the bigs, the biggest question centers around who should start at the 4 (to me, Samardo, for all his faults, is the best choice at the 5 but seems incapable of playing the 4). We need someone who can rebound, run, and finish strong inside. To me, the answer is obvious: Terrence Jennings. He’s lightning fast, finishes well, and emerged as a great rebounder towards the end of this season. Though he’s sized more like a center, he can do a lot of the things that Earl did for us (though I won’t trust him beyond the arc, yet). George Goode is tempting to put here, thanks to his jumper, but I still think he needs more work, and will probably be the first big off the bench, either for Samardo or Jennings (as he’s capable of filling either spot). Van Treese will probably see more minutes at 5 than 4, and could even become the designated backup in that spot (making Goode responsible for only backing up the 4) but we’ll see. So:

1) Sosa / Siva
2) Jerry / Knowles / Delk
3) Buckles / Swop
4) Jennings / Goode
5) Samardo / Goode / Van Treese

If Rick goes with the three guard lineup (which seems unlikely), my guess is it’d look like this:

1) Siva
1/2) Sosa
2) Smith
4) Jennings
5) Samardo

With that lineup, our first subs are Knowles for any of the guards and Buckles for Jennings. Delk and Kuric (and possibly Marra) would also see minutes at guard, while Goode would be the additional backup for the bigs. I don’t think this is the best use of our talent, however, as the Sosa/Smith/Buckes/Jennings/Samardo lineup seems to be significantly more efficient.

Sorry for the essay.

Three guards

Probably wouldn’t be a great fit for us on defense, we need someone with enough size to contest the wings of our zone, that’s the key to our zone, limiting threes, we don’t collapse the lane like most zones, we send our forwards to the holes on the perimeter, although a guard may be quick enough to get there, he certainly won’t be big enough or long enough to contest the shot.

I think that virtually rules out that scenario, because Pitino would rather die than give up our vaunted zone.

I believe that next year is going to be a great year.

There will be alot of experienced talent coming back as well as a great deal of talent coming in fresh.

I say they place UL 15th pre season.

They probably drop some games early as they always do which may take them near the bottem if not out. Then they roar back up to the top.

I predect by the end of the season top 10.

Who knows Siva may be the next Derek Rose? Hes got alot of Tatoos doesnt that mean he can play ball?

by lvl1 on Apr 2, 2009 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

I think Siva will end up being phenomenal

I’m just concerned about our wing players. TWill and Earl spoiled us in the frontcourt.
