Who will lead the 2009-2010 Cardinal basketball team?
It was noted in C.L. Brown's story this morning that Rick Pitino will take his time on naming a captain for the '09-10 squad, despite anointing Terrence Williams and Andre McGee to the position very shortly after the end of last season.
So who will end up getting the nod?
The odds-on favorite has to be an Edgar Sosa/Jerry Smith pairing, but the two have shown even less from a leadership standpoint than Williams and McGee had heading into their senior seasons. Pitino has handed the title to underclassmen before, and it's not unlikely that he'll choose to do it again here.
So which of these guys has most earned the right to be named team captain in 2009-2010?

I think
Delk (“Big Country”) has the maturity to get the nod

Why dont you shut the hell up MU2D
You just wanted to say “Big Country.” I dont think Edgar Sosa is capable of leading a blind man across the street so the 13 people who voted for him are complete dumbasses. It has to be Jerry, wouldnt be too upset if it was Preston though.

wow..
I think a lot of people are going to be surprised re: Sosa next season.

but I did vote Smith
having a sneaking suspicion Edgar will be co-captains with Jerry

I would vote Big Sammy
I think it would help his game from a mental standpoint if he was named captain. How? I dunno.

I voted Smith.
But I think Preston and Reggie both have a very good chance.

My first reaction was that it can't be Sosa
My second reaction was that it can’t be Sosa.
But, if he’s gonna be here, maybe the weight would be the ticket for him and the team. So far his career (despite the Texas A&M game, despite his game winner against Kentucky) has been a highlight reel of disappointment and unfulfilled promise.
And with the Captain title, he’d have nowhere to hide and pout about his own limited world, and for once would take some self responsibility, throw off the ***DC like martyrdom brood, and get himself and us together for his last year.

Sorry about the Caracter reference….I know we had gone 58 straight days without mentioning him…the bubble was stretched too tightly…it was gonna blow…I couldn’t resist…..
What’s fair is fair.
I’m off to the penalty box for an indeterminate amount of time.

I voted for Delk; don't know exactly why
except that, sorry to say, these are slim pickens. Knowles would probably be more likely to become a leaders by his senior year. Jerry might be a good choice, given his passion, but his inconsistency as a player makes that somewhat problematic, too. Delk was my default position. In my head I know there’s never been a freshman captain here; why couldn’t we start with Siva if he proves to be everything people think he might be? The tats certainly fit right in.

I voted for jerry and here's why
To me, the captain does not need to be the one who possess the most talent or ability to “take over” a game. He needs to be someone who has been there and gotten through it. He has had his ups and downs and can help his teammates get through the downs. He needs to be about the team, not about himself. He needs to know they system and know the coach. He is the extension of the coach on the floor and in the gym and locker room when the coach isn’t there. He cheers his teammates to do well even when he himself isn’t doing so well. He brings effort and enthusiasm every day.
As we all know, Jerry is the best cheerleader on the team. No matter how many points, fouls, turnovers, or assists he has, he is the first to get pumped after a nice play and the first guy off the bench welcome his teammates. He brings it every game. From the outside looking it, Jerry seems to be the best representative of the Cards next year.
If not Jerry, Preston maybe, but not sure he can be the coach on the floor or command the attention when the coach isn’t around. Good Edgar would be a fantastic captain, but Bad Edgar would be a terrible captain. Hopefully bad Edgar is gone forever, but you can’t take that risk with a captain. Samardo, TJ, Goode are too young. I think it needs to be a Jr. or a Sr. and someone who has been there for more than a year

I voted Jerry
It was an easy pick to me. The hasty choice would have been Sosa because he’ll be a senior point guard. Jerry is different though in that he’s usually our best cheerleader when he’s on the bench instead of sulking. I do think Sosa has the potential to be a leader, and if tagged with the responsibility could live up to it.
I wanted to pick Preston, but I think he’s more of a leader by example at this point. Reggie is way too quiet and reserved. I think George has potential, but needs to be on the court more to be effective. As for the rest, time will tell.

Howie Long For Team Captain/Saturday's Games
…CBS will feature the UCONN-MSU as the early game, and the ‘Nova-NC game as the Marquee game.
I had trouble with visualizing how this would go. Most of the time it is pretty clear which game will be the “featured” game. Here we have the fast elephants against the slow elephants, followed by the fast impalas against the faster impalas. Anyway, we’ll get into this more as the days go by even though we don’t have the stomach for it now.
By the way, is anybody else getting irritated with Macho/Insulting Howie Long dressing some dude down cause maybe the dude’s truck has a “step up” to get to the cargo bed? Like maybe the poor guy has to actually work with his truck and climb up and down four thousand times a day, and not use it for commericials like Howie?

I think those commercials are pretty funny
especially the one poking fun at Dodge and their heated steering wheel..

the thing that pisses me off about those commercials
is they don’t compare apples to apples. they mock the “man step” and then compare it to chevy’s warranty? wtf? ad hominem for the loss.

Props to Mike...
…400+ votes as of the time I write this post. Great growth in the last year.
I voted for Jerry – Captain = leadership, and Jerry can be a leader of this team. The torch will be passed.
Is it too early to vote for 2010-2011 team leaders? Knowles and Siva are going to be a sick back court in 2010-2011.
And the four-guard rotation next year is going to be pretty good too.

i'm one of the dumbasses that voted for sosa.
sosa’s game was much better the last ten games of the season and i think being captain might just be the confidence boost he needs,,,,,maybe he’ll embrace the role of team leader and mentor to peyton siva if he’s named captain or co captain.

Doesn't anyone think Captain Brickley
has a nice ring to it?

Agree with Roz
The “man step” thing says more about Long’s tiny, uh, manhood (and that of the commercial’s writers) than it does about Ford putting a step to help old guys such as myself. A pissy little ad, if you ask me.
