just realized
that was Jerry Smith defending on WVU’s final three-pointer.
feet on the floor. arms straight up. NOT FOULING.
apparently you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.
Go Cards!
foot movement was something Jerry couldnt quit
on his shot…not defense…
now rabbitkick earl…thats a different story
now that Jerry has (apparently) learned to avoid fouling three-point shooters, you’d think that Earl could learn to maintain a pivot foot.

pivot what?
Actually his strength is pivot FEET but the rules don’t see it that way.
the big east champion louisville cardinals
that will not get old. the bummer is we play the early game on thursday when i’ll be at work. but that’s a small price to pay for being the m’effing big east champions of the world
Courier-journal bias?
So the front page of the Courier-Journal sports section this morning has a picture (taking up 1/3 of the page) of Meeks and UK – “Cats fall again…”
but only a tiny tiny little blip on that same page about our HOMETOWN BIG EAST CHAMPION, PROBABLY #1 NCAA SEEDED UOFL FRICKING CARDINALS!
Don’t tell me the game was on too late to adjust the pagination

nah
I would agree that the C-J is one of the worst run papers in America…they knew the likelihood of the result after seeing UCONN fall but perhaps their deadline did not allow for a fleshed out creative change to the pagination.

Curious Jumble
Some Cards fans may see it as the CJ celebrating yet another Cats loss. In reality I think the CJ while Curiously Jumbled is fairly neutral.
yes
most major newspapers pay people as ombudsmen to keep these types of perceptions in check. I agree, by highlighting UK’s loss, it could have a double meaning.

Merch
Any idea how long it will take 2009 BE Reg. Season Champions merch to come out? I’m buying everything.
Awesome accomplishment
Going 16-2 in this years Big East has to be tougher than getting to a Final Four. For UL to have showed the grit to get through that schedule with only two stumbles is incredible. Freddy
Crazy good conference
How amazing is it that a team that wins a conference outright is ranked beneath not just one, but two other teams in that conference? It sucks that Louisville probably needs to make the BET Finals and either win or at least take whoever the opponent is down to the wire to get a #1 seed. I don’t know about y’all, but I’m pulling for Pitt to do it to UConn one more time so we can take UConn’s place as the 2nd BE team to earn a #1 seed. Assuming the higher seeds all make it that far, of course. That’s a big “IF” in this league!
The Day After
No matter what happens now, the 2008-2009 season will have been a rousing success. If we get beat in the opening round of the Big East, it will have been a success. If we get beat in the opening round of the NCAA’s, it still will have been a success. Now, no matter what, our first Big East Championship banner will hang from Freedom’s old rafters in its last season. Yes, we’re had success in Conference USA, but nobody can say that this championship took place in some backwater. And never has our regular season success taken on such gravitas since the halcyon days of the late, lamented, and unquestionably significant, Metro Conference. So, no matter what, the season has been a great success. Now, do we want more?
Hell, yes.
Quick hits on last night:
Did all four of the Gameday guys pick West Virginia? I was in and out of the room, and I know that Bilas, and Phelps did. I think Knight might have given us a better chance, and I didn’t hear the former Carolina guy?
Huge free throws from Jerry. Jerry, you are stout, and I’m not talking about that spare tire.
Speaking of free throws, was that Will Scott who hit those technicals? I’m gonna have to revise the score that he would beat me in a one-on-one from 21-1 to something not quite as close. Hostile crowd. Cold hands. And double swish. What a set of keystones!
The front guys, SamSam and Terrence. Good enough, guys. Maybe better than good enough.
E5 – You hit a couple of big threes and even though you walked five times, the refs only called it three times. Speaking of walking, did anybody notice that on Williams’ coast to coast nab and jam, that at one point he held the ball and carried it for at least four steps?
Edgar – There was a report from Morgantown Air Traffic control of a couple of flying objects occupying West Virginia air space after those two uber clangers you took late in the second half were first two feet right, and then two feet left of the rim. Was the basket in motion or something? Three letters for you: GPS
It was nice that even the house shills were giving TWILL some love about his candidacy for Big East Player of The Year. What took them so long?
And one last word for TWILL himself:
Transcendent.
yeah, all the "analysts" picked WVU
good ol chair tosser picked us though. Wonder if he knows much about basketball?
Why does Phelps have such a hardon for hating on us?
Get a load of this
Proof that the Big East is a tough mother… Jerry Palm over at CBSSports.com had Louisville penciled in as a #1 seed last week. Now that they’ve actually won the BE outright, they dropped to a #2. LOL He says Pitt (who he had at #2 last week) now replaces Louisville by beating UConn again. He does say that it’s possible there’ll be three #1’s from the BE, but only if Louisville wins the BET. OK, so I get it, but man that rankles. To think a team can win the toughest conf. in America outright, then be overlooked for a #1 seed in order to place two other teams from that same conf. as #1’s just defies logic. I know that’s kind of oversimplifying things, but for God’s sake, if Pitt beats UConn again in the BET Semis, and Louisville makes it to the BET Finals, doesn’t that – at the very least – make a strong case for Louisville as the second #1 seed from the BET? I think Pitt has earned the #1 already, but surely Louisville will have earned one as well if they get to the Finals after winning the regular season! Sheesh!
see this makes no sense to me
a few days ago, when he first put uofl as #1, he said it was because we’d probably win the BE conf. only scenario in which that happened was for uconn to lose and us to win. so that happens, and he goes back to what it was before. and then there’s all that garbage at the top about “This projection is unique among those you’ll see because it is based on what I think the final bracket will look like, not necessarily what it would look like if the tournament started today. Of course, the later we get into the season, the more this will resemble an as of today bracket.” Why does it move around day to day if that’s the case, Jerry? He should change his name; he’s not worthy to share it with Jerry Smith.
The problem with that bracket isn't that we got a 2 seed.
I can live with that. It’s that Oklahoma is the 1 seed in the same bracket that Duke is the 2 seed. That might be the most overrated bracket in history, and there’s no way we should end up being the 2 seed that faces UNC (unless UNC is considered the 4th #1 seed, which it isn’t).
His only loss was UConn
He was – amazingly – benched for the Minnesota, UNLV and Notre Dame games.

Bilas
Jay Bilas wanted to pick us, he said we were the better team. I believe they picked WVU because of emotion and atmosphere. I certainly had my doubts about us beating them in that environment. Fredd
Point spread
Vegas had WVU as a three point favorite.
Hell Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they about gave me a heart attack but all is well!!!!! I kept screaming what is with all the whistles?? I thought this was the Big East?? No blood, no foul, right? Samardo picked up a foul every time he checked in, seemed like the same for Jennings, I know Rick is a genius, but I think he could have put Goode in to “steal” some minutes. Oh well, we won, Kentucky lost AGAIN, it was a great day!!!!!
Poll
Quick! When I say “most overrated #1 seed ever,” what is your IMMEDIATE reaction?
Every Kansas team in the mid to late 90s
MFs cost me my bracket every year.

Yeah, Kansas
went out early a lot in those days. But UL, haven’t they had a quietly great year this year?
How about Arizona going out early? Before Lute won it all, they were usually an early casualty, too.
And Syracuse was always ripe for upsets (Unversity of Rhode Island, Navy, and the Richmond Spiders…which I think was a 15 over a two).

Duke '06
Its gotta be a Duke team, which year I’m not sure but 06 is the nearest I can remember. They lost to 4 seed LSU in the Elite 8 that year, but then again they did beat fellow #1 seed Memphis that year, so maybe its Memphis.
Ok, Ok
I guess my experiment didn’t work. I think I should have said most “undeserving” instead of “overrated.”
I was hoping that you would say the Washington team from 2005 that was shockingly #1 yet was dismantled by UofL. Funny thing about that team is that it included two bona fide NBA stars with Brandon Roy and Nate Robinson.
it wasnt so much that Washington got a 1 seed that year
They should have been a 1 seed, but it was more an issue of UL getting a 3 seed. That team had an outside chance at the 1 seed, got passed over for that and the 2 seed, and the 3 seed, and landed at the 4 seed. We were ranked top ten in both polls
Oklahoma
… and the entire Big 12.
