Is E5 serious?
Just read that Earl is going to declare for the NBA - is he really serious.
Tallented - yes we all know that, but at no point this season have I watched him and thought he is playing well beyond his competition, if anything I think he has become more of a mental case.
The CT game in particular he seemed ill at ease. I am not here to bash him, just to question his decision as well to state how dellusional some college athletes are. I would have a lot more respect if he said, I am going to really focus my self and work all summer to be the best I can be. It's as if he's just bored and wants to puch a ticket on another train.
Is there something I am missing?

Since when has the NBA drafted on production?
He has the potential they drool over, yes, he might not have reached it all here yet, which frustrates some of us UL fans, but he undoubtedly has “it”. Plus he has a child on the way and was wanting to leave after last season.
Wish him well.
Great minds, etc. :)
I miss the old days of the internet when men were men, hot girls were middle aged men, and hot underage girls were FBI agents.....
What you're missing
NBA teams rarely if ever draft a player based on his collegiate accomplishments. They’re FAR more interested in a player with the right body type and raw skills. Then all too often they give up on said player when he doesn’t mature as quickly as they’d like and said player realizes his potential somewhere else.
I think Earl would benefit greatly from staying in school another year and polishing his game, but he’d be crazy to pass up the money he’ll get being drafted in the top ten, which is where he’s likely to end up.

since when did all the uofl players start having kids?
is this typical for college bball players these days? am i a 23 year old fogey?
I'm 32...
and will have an 8 and 10 year old this year… get to work son, the survival of the species depends on it! We can’t leave it all up to the Chinese!
This has been the plan since he backed out of the draft last year. No surprise. Plus, he continues to be projected in the first round, and some of his limitations existed last year and will be around next year.
As much as Earl frustrates me, I think he does get a pretty raw deal from a lot of Card fans. The reality is that he busts his butt, plays great defense, crashes the board hard, and draws a lot of attention on defense. He’s a strong passer and was 2 assists away from a triple double earlier this year. His double doubles are so common now, we just expect them and ask what’s wrong if he doesn’t come through.
I think his problem is that his flaws are the type that shine out to everyone. He makes a lot of bad judgments on offense, and gets stripped too easily when he gets a rebound or drives into the lane. Those appear to be effort issues, but they really aren’t. And I’m not sure they are problems that would disappear if he came back next season. He is what he is, and that’s a pretty amazing basketball player. I wish him the best.
Could have said it better
I feel the exact same way about Earl, and find myself constantly defending him.
23?
You should have had atleast 2 by now. Shawn Kemp had like 7 at that point (that we know about)

Hell, Doc, she could field a soccer team, both sides.
And then there are young couples who can’t conceive, can’t adopt, can’t have their own talk show, can’t afford surgically bee stung lips, and don’t even aspire to be on Dr Effing Phil.
Is anybody getting mad out there?
Yet?

I think it's just a reference to Airplane.
"Surely, you’re not serious."
"Yes, I’m serious and stop calling my Shirley."
Airplane reference
no hard feelings

All right, UL is my hot hot sex, you listen, and listen close. Flying a plane is no different from riding a bicycle; it's just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.
Dais, can you fly this FanPost and land it?

Never a Kareem guy
But when he tumbled out of the co-pilot’s seat clad in the Lakers home golden unis and sporting the size 22 1/2 Adidas gunboats, I had to give him some good vibe.
Feeling just a bit queasy.

He's smooth
Who else watched the Marquette game and was surprised to see another double-double from Clark? Of course, he scored two for the opponents, but his reaction was worth giving them the deuce. The guy is just smooth. He’s one of those players that looks like he’s dogging or bored most of the time, but then you scan the stats and he’s got double digit points and high single or double digit rebounds. We will miss him next year. Hope he makes a boatload of cash in the bigs.
True, his line of production is pretty solid, until
you do some more realistic number cunching (i.e. take away an assist for every turnover) and factor in some of the games he either cost or almost cost the team. I luv em and wish em well, but if he spent a year cleaning up his handling issues he’d go lottery next year. I think the draft projections are wrong and he’ll be closer to bottom of first round, it not early 2nd round. Unless he really turns it on during Madness.
Hmm...Hakeem and Clyde were smooth...
But the Doctors of Dunk have swagger…
Earl is a taller version of TWill’s junior season—immense talent, improving basketball IQ but in need of macro-refinement in several areas of his game…but, if you will excuse the homoerotic adjectives of Jay Bilas, his “length” and “tremendous upside potential” make him a lottery pick…and yet the all-around basketball acumen that is TWill gets nary a mention in the Player of the Year discussion and only in the last 2 weeks was he considered late 1st round talent in the Association.
For the curious, on Chad Ford’s Top 100 List:
Earl Clark sits at # 18
Patrick Patterson #28
TWill is #30 (Wedged between Free Throw Marksman Nick Calathes and Craig Brackins)
Jodie Meeks #53
Samardo #81

Always Great To Get A Houston Reference
I think I was over confident going into the ’83 semi final. The game that changed basketball forever. There were acrobats before, but not so many seen on such a center stage. I believe we led at the half.
Hakeem is probably a top ten (near the bottom of the top ten) NBA center of all time. Quite a feat considering the top three (Wilt, Kareem, Russell) are cemented forever. I think the Wake Forest gent who now plays for San Antonio, Duncan, might shade out Alajuan now.
Clyde would probably be close to top ten small forward in NBA history as well.
All their coach, Guy Lewis, ever did (besides going to 3 out of 4 final fours) is be a centerpiece in arguably the three most important college basketball games ever played: The above mentioned game; the loss to NC State the following Monday night; and the epic confrontation at the Astrodome featuring (then) Alcindor and “The Big E,” Elvin Hayes.
Will, it’s 6:55, enjoy the game.

buried somewhere in the comments section...
of some post earlier this year – someone made the astute point that as Cardinals fans we should be happy right now because we are playing with house money. In this metaphor e5 = house money. We have no right to have him playing for us this season. He was likely a top 10 pick last year and is a top 10 pick this year. It is simply unrealistic for fans to expect 4 years out of an Earl Clark calibre of player. If we want 4-star MDAA level guys then we’ll have to get used to getting two years out of them because three is a miracle.
Pitino has always given the impression that he has the kids’ professional interests at heart, whether they mesh with UofL’s needs or not. It’s a smart position to take. The last thing we want is for top recruits to think Pitino is going to give them a load of crap about sticking around when they really want to play two or three and bounce.
And honestly we don’t need 4-stars here for 4 years. Hopefully we’ll always have few guys like TWill who have played under the radar a little and need a senior season in the national spotlight to elevate their nba status. Williams is a great example of why a 4th year can work well for some players. I hope edgar is watching.
And let’s not kid ourselves. The reason we get a little bummed about Earl leaving isn’t b/c we are concerned he’s not ready. It’s because we start to drool when we think about what that guy could do for the cards in a senior year. But after a third season it’s time for US to be happy for Earl and to wish him the best and hope he plays so well in the NBA that people start to see the quality of player that comes out of UofL.
Just sayin’
e
Bingo!
That’s the same formula that North Carolina’s been using for quite a few years now. Personally, I would love to have their results over that same span. Their high school all-americans leave early, regardless of how they perform in college. The NBA is going to draft on the same potential they had in high school. When bench players like Marvin Williams can be a first round pick, then high school players find the school very attractive. It does look like Rick’s got quite a few high major players lined up for the next few years.
Nice Stuff As Always, e
College basketball at this level is really a minor league for the NBA. Like Triple A minor league baseball. When the person is ready they should go.
Any other thoughts would be like keeping the young Gretzky in the Canadian Juniors.
But we probably should leave edgar out of any conversations concerning lottery picks, Earl Clark, TWILL, or leaving early. Don’t you think?

Since Forever.
Don’t you remember the Sports Illustrated cover years back with Greg Minor’s baby and the words “Where’s Daddy?”
I know when I was at UofL it seemed half the football team was either married or had a kid. I didn’t know any basketball players, but I have always heard of a few with kids.
Minor, Morton, Hopgood
The prop 48 guys.
Helped make our 91 -92 season the first losing year in forever.
Up until then, we held the record for consecutive winning years.
